Chris Williams in demand. Multiple teams want him.
Looks like Chris is going to be OK. He's a hot commodity right now & can be picky who he signs with.
LINK to the article NFL Rumors: OT Chris Williams Seems In Demand
Former Bears OT Chris Williams will be making a 3rd stop on his mid-season free agent tour
The Eagles were the first team to host former Bears OT Chris Williams, but they're not the last. A day after visiting Philadelphia, he headed to Arizona for a meeting with the Cardinals.
His next stop was in San Diego where the Chargers checked him out.
At this point in the season, there's enough turmoil on offensive lines around the league that it's no shock to see Williams in demand. Where is he going to go? Well, that probably comes down to a few things.
Obviously money will be an issue, but so will the opportunity to actually play and where. Williams has played a lot at LG but was a LT in college and many feel that's his most natural position. So if the money is close, maybe a starting job at LT over LG is what sways him?
While there's been no indication of when Williams will make his decision, it makes sense that he'll sign by Monday to be in practice for the following Sunday.

They're all teams in need of a LT so that's why he's getting some interest from them. And they're also all teams who are struggling to protect their QBs and win games. I'm glad he's getting some interest. Just because he wasn't Tice's cup of tea doesn't mean he isn't someone else's.
There aren't a whole lot of guys out there who have had his number of NFL starts and anybody who might be able to play some LT is gonna get a look. Isn't that why we brought in Jonathan Scott even though his track record as an NFL LT is spotty at best. Jeff Backus is a Methuselah at LT for the Lions and they didn't keep him around even as a backup.
I think Emery probably tried to float CWill by some teams for a possible trade but it's pretty obvious there were no takers. Not even for a 7th round pick. We can't cry over spilt milk. CWill wasn't working out here so we gave him a shot at starting over elsewhere. It was time to move on for both sides.
He may once have been a first round pick but he never played up to that level even as an OG.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I actually think he is going to be a good player.

still don't understand why he never got a fair chance to win the LG Spot back. He was good there

He's pretty much been Tice's whipping boy for two years now and if that's work I'd rather work somewhere else too.

He will be a lot like Columbo, in that he'll help a team for a number of years to come. But not at LT.
I will always believe he wasn't the type LG that Tice likes. He was a great pulling guard, and IMHO, he was our best offensive lineman last year, certainly our most consistent guy. But he's never going to be a mauler-type that Tice prefers.
I'm OK with that.
But a team that prefers a more athletic guard will do well with C.Will.
p.s. I'll have to confess here that I absolutely love watching a great run-blocking oline with interior linemen who can pull well. If you ever watch those old '85 games, it is poetry in motion to watch Payton running behind pulling guards Thayer, Bortz & center Hilgy. Toss in FB Matt Suhey's blocking, and you had a "clinic" put on every Sunday. You can have a great running game without mauler-types. But like I said, I'm OK with the mauler's too.
Hey I just found this cool pic of Walter interacting with the fans prior to a game. Classic. Classy.

Williams don't care. Williams don't give a shit.
The only comment I wanted to add is: Wow, Williams release and his FA touring is the only real O "line" thread on the first page. During the start of the season it felt like 50% of all the posts in this joint were about Webb, Tice, and Tice, Webb. Another 20% were about the rest of the "O" line and Emery's lack of a big movements during the off season.
The Bears Offensive Line IS NOT the worst in the NFL, not even close... this makes me happy. Sometimes good enough IS good enough. Cutler, as much as I dislike him, is a good quarterback, and when he is not throwing a tantrum and trying to force the issue, he can be a great quarterback. I hope the line keeps improving, because if the pass protection can give Cutty time against better and better defensive fronts this new WR core can take advantage.
Could Chris Williams have done better here if he was handled differently? Should he have been a starting guard? Is Tice's ego a price we pay? I dunno, I thought earlier that he would have taken over Webb's role or have been moved inside by now, so what do I know? I think the chances are Chris will land and find a role on another team. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth watching another first round pick being shipped out, but I wish him the best. Essentially, I hope Williams has thick enough skin that he truly does not have to give a shit.
