Kellen Davis with another poor performance
Kellen Davis is huge. Big guy and quick enough to get open when running routes. But he struggled in the game against the Lions with a dropped pass and several missed blocks. I know Lovie thinks it's going to pay off someday though I don't see it happening. Davis will never be like Jimmy Graham. There aren't many options for us at TE. Spaeth isn't very good and Adams isn't much better. I feel we are stuck with three goofy tight ends. Not one of them look very comfortable.
There has been some talk about Dallas dropping Witten after this season and I'd be happy if we picked him up. Although he is not young anymore he's got some experience.

My quick take on that is that the bears haven't quite figured out how to use him (KD) yet. While I would expect him to be able to catch a down field pass(not excusing his failure there), there was a short (dump off?) pass to him about 2 yards past the Line of Scrimmage, KD was able to turn that into a 4 yard gain while getting tackled by 3 linebackers. Downside is that the bears like to use Forte/Bush for those underneath/dump off/check down routes..
Will look into this further if time becomes available....

Davis is a jump ball guy, and can plow through defenders. IDK if it's more that he simply doesn't "have it" or that he's needed to block so much that we can't see that very often. I guess against Carolina and Tennesee's weak d-lines, we'll probably see a few more passes his way...

Yup, big and quick. But he doesn't use it. He's like a mama's boy out there being all nice and sweet and easy-going. Can we package all three of those guys and get one good TE for them?

BTW, I'm ready for Rodriguez to come back from injury, because I think Tice should really start getting this dude involved in the passing game, as an H back.

That's my take on it too. The guy has been used as a blocker most of his career. Receiver-wise, Martz just had him sitting on the shelf, unused. He needs to get more work in games (as a receiver TE). I also agree that he's the "jump ball guy" and we need to use him more in the red zone this way.

I think with him, Rodriguez, Jeffrey, Forte and Marshall with the o-line playing comfortably, we could have a LOT of different size and speed mismatches.

I'm waiting to see Davis catch a ten yard pass in the middle right behind the linebackers but it never happens. Jimmy Graham does it once a game.

I'm not a fan of Davis but when you run chip and release along with mediocre playcalling vs. good Detroit LB's I can't trash the guy. None of the TE's are exactly tearing it up. Davis gets the dropsies but I'll give him some latitude since he can't really get into a rhythm.

I'm not all for getting Jason Witten but if Davis keeps playing like he did last night he won't see year two of that $6 mil deal he got this past spring. That 3rd down drop was inexcusable for a guy with his experience and from that point on the entire offensive momentum we'd built up shifted.
His blocking was spotty as well as was Carimi's and that was one of the primary reason we couldn't get Forte free to the outside. I've been a defender of Davis all along but after last night to me that kid is on borrowed time if I'm coaching the team.
One more game like that and I sit his ass and use Eldridge to block and start using ERod for the express reason we drafted him and that wasn't to play FB!

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
