Something I really didn't expect. Left side of our oline is solid.
I'm re-watching last night's game. It is beautiful to watch Webb & Rachal working together blocking. I never ever dreamed either of these guys would be decent this year.
I was wrong.
Now, if Carimi can get it together (and he will) I think we're better than I could have hoped for, with this year's oline. Carimi & Lewis gave up the Suh sack on Cutler. Suh beat their double-team.
I actually think Webb/Rachal match up better against physical dline players better than the smaller/quicker edge rushers. Those give Webb more trouble, for sure.
The run-blocking of Webb/Rachel was stellar most of the night.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Rachal probably told Webb that if he didn't play well and made him look bad, he was going to cut him up into small pieces put him into the vase next to the one that has Hoffa in it. Apparently, he is very persuasive and has a coaching career to look forward to after his NFL days.

Does this mean Rachal is a great leader?

Well, looks like he got done what Tice couldn't.
The line operates as one, perhaps much of Webb's poor play (in retrospect) was due to poor play at LG. But then it's even more puzzling why CW was not put there since he was really solid last year.
In any case, Rachal seems to be working out well, and has a much wider mean streak. I was not able to watch every minute of the game last night as I was multi-tasking, but I did see one play where the DE blew right past Webb. Of course a five sack game can't can't be said to have been a good OL performance. I know they were playing Detroit, but still, five sacks and all the pressures was not very good.
It was hot and cold. At times they gave Jay some time and others he was running for his life. Tice didn't call plays that tried to take pressure off the pass rush either, so it was the coashing as much as the line. Detroit brings it and if there was any doubt, into the first quarter he should have realized that and made any changes to accomodate the new knowledge that they were going to bring pressure.
We won, but other than the incredible performance by the D (and Peanut especially), we only played ok. The defensive performance was what made this game fun to watch. They are very strong.

Not all of the sacks were on the oline. Carimi looks like our weakest link on the oline. But he's in his first full season, so he's still in a learning mode. Hopefully he will get better as the season progresses. He is a better run blocker than pass blocker right now. Lance Louis whiffed on one.
Webb didn't keep his guy engaged on a block that cost us one of the sacks. That's the one where the defender disengaged from Webb and then looped around to the right side of our line and came in and sacked Cutler.
The oline looked better to me overall. The run blocking on that left side sure looked good. On one play, Garza joined Rachal and Webb to absolutely clear out that left side. Just swept the defenders out like a broom, for Forte. It was a think of beauty.
It wasn't that long ago where we were not capable of getting any oline surge against the better dlines. Now, we have the power and execution to blow defenders off the line. It seems like it's been a LONG time since I have seen that by a Bears oline.
It makes you respect what Tice is trying to do here with the bigger, more physical players. He's definitely on to something here.

I want All-Pros on this offensive line. Webb is on pace to give up about 12 sacks this season. Hopefully he'll settle down. But if he doesn't, I hope Emery pulls the trigger and signs someone like a Long, a Clady, or a Bushrod. By next year, that right side of the offensive line will be strong. We just need to make sure that the left side holds up, and if they don't, to make the proper arrangements to find players who will more than adequately replace them.

I did not really like Webbs run blocking. His pass blocks were good.

I think part of the problem was that the Lions were running a wide nine defensive front. It's hard to hit the edges and turn it on when you got a defensive end as good as Kyle Vanden Bosch covering out so far on the RE.
However, the right did do well run blocking from what I saw. Do you think so to or do you disagree, and if you disagree, can you tell me what you saw so that I may understand better?

I agree that the right side does a good job so far. Every Line will have bad plays every now and then, but the right side gives Cutler much more time + Carimi is a learned Run Blocker. This helps him too
