Isn't that what we were doing w/this thread to begin with? trying to see how good they were developing? One has fully developed into a starting quality player one hasn't. Could that change sure, but that's not what we are looking at, we are looking at what is.
OK Ric, fair enough but the title says evaluating Shea McClellin to date. It doesn't say we're comparing him to who else we may have drafted instead. IMHO (or not so humble depending on what day it is, lol) the other two are playing for different teams in different systems so at best all you can compare it on is that. Not what may have happened if Jones came here and McClellin went to NE like maybe NE would have liked.
From all that I can tell each team came away with a player they value. I don't really care what Lovie or Emery may have said about their plans for him when they drafted him. Things change. Izzy has played better ball (3.5 sacks) and so has Wootton (3.0 sacks/2 FF) so that negated having to use McClellin in a full time role at LDE.
Is anyone really all that unhappy with what he's done so far? And as far as one being a starting caliber player and one not, that's a matter of opinion. One plays DE in a system that rotates lineman and the other plays DE/OLB in a system that doesn't. If Jones was playing Chicago would he be playing every down in place of Izzy and Wootton? No I don't think he would. We'd be using him just like we do McClellin and then his stats may not be as great.
Who knows? It really not an apples to apples comparison.
Before this year Wootton couldn't be counted on but now I'd say that he's the LDE of the future and we can continue to spot McClellin all over the place and let him make plays. Eventually he may become Peps replacement at RDE instead and that may be a better spot for him anyway.
The point was to look at what McClellin has done not the alternatives. I have no quarrel with those who want to look at a comparison and say we'd have done better with Jones I just don't share that opinion is all.

Well as much as I like Shea, count me in the camp that thinks Jones would have been a better choice.
Guys don't you think there is still a chance that we could move the kid to MLB once Urlacher hangs it up?
They weigh the same, their 40 times are .1 different, height is 1 inch different. I mean they are basically built the same. Urlacher comes up slightly better on every category but still, I think its too close for coincidence.
Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think the plan for him is to move to MLB and its a respect thing for Urlacher to not draft a kid behind him.
I watched the Carolina game again last night (NFL network, rewind) and two things stood out:
Firstly, Shane (aka. Shea) really did not have that many snaps Sunday and was basically taken out in the red zone. The comparisons made earlier in this thread do need to be used in context as Soul, and some pointed out.
Secondly, on what he did get he wasn't an automatic pin your ears down lineman. I didn't take notes or anything but I'm pretty sure I saw him standing up on the line twice, did more stunting percentage wise than the other DL, and I swear I saw him back in to cover the middle from out of a four point stance once.
If it is true that they have been teaching him to defend the pass, as Urlacher suggested in his comment. Linebacker, or perhaps a "Elephant/Hybrid" just might be the plan for the future. Not a bad plan B in any case.
I did like his lone tackle for a loss on Williams though, he ended that play before I even realized it had started. Yeah, the Offense whiffed on that one, but still McClellin's motor has made great use of those freebies, now if he could keep improving on his moves and shedding those blocks $$$.
And yeah, I'm a fan boy so perhaps my McClellin goggles might have me reading too much into this. It would not surprise me if he was drafted over some of the other prospects because he brought along the possibility of being a option at the MLB slot.
