The No Fun League is at it Again; Hester and Marshall Both Fined for Cleats

Earl Bennett said he probably would not have worn orange cleats if Brandon Marshall had not agreed to wear them. (And you listened to that trouble maker?)

The NFL has fined Chicago Bears receiver Earl Bennett $10,500 for wearing orange cleats in Monday night's 13-7 win over the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field, Bennett confirmed to ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson.Brandon Marshall also wore orange cleats, but it's not certain if he was fined. (He was. $10.5k too)

Bennett told ESPNChicago.com that he plans to appeal the fine because he wore pink shoelaces as part of the NFL's effort to raise awareness about breast cancer during the month of October.

Bennett was fined twice last season for a total of $15,000 for wearing the cleats. At the time, the league said if Bennett wore the shoelaces for three straight games he would get called for a delay of game penalty and would be ejected.

He did not risk the further sanctions last year, but when he came to Soldier Field on Monday, he was persuaded to wear them again.

"It actually came about when I walked in the locker room (before the game), and because I had them in my bag, and I wasn't sure if I was going to wear them," Bennett said Monday. "Then Brandon Marshall was like, 'Let's wear them.' So I just put them on. I probably wouldn't have worn them if he wouldn't have agreed to it."

Bennett caught three passes for 27 yards on Monday night.

Brandon Marshall was fined $10,500 for wearing orange cleats during the Chicago Bears' 13-7 win over the Detroit Lions on "Monday Night Football," according to a league spokesperson.Earl Bennett was fined the same amount for wearing orange cleats Monday, but it wasn't his first uniform violation. Bennett was fined a total of $15,000 last season for wearing the cleats in consecutive games. The league warned Bennett last season that if he wore them for a third straight game he would receive a delay of game penalty and be ejected. Bennett did not wear them again until Monday.

Bennett told ESPN Chicago that he planned to appeal the fine because he wore pink shoelaces as part of the NFL's effort to raise awareness about breast cancer during the month of October.

It's not known whether Marshall also plans to appeal the fine.

Bennett said he probably wouldn't have worn the cleats without Marshall's participation.

ESPNChicago.com's Michael C. Wright and Jeff Dickerson contributed to this report.

Doesn't it make you wonder what might have happened back in the 60s if they'd have told Butkus HE couldn't wear orange cleats or if they'd have demanded he wear pink ones.

Apparently teams designate primary shoe color before season. I'm guessing it's navy blue for bears.

I think the NFL is the No Fun League for a lot of reasons, but I'm fine with this. The players wear a uniform and the uniform guidelines are clearly stated. If they don't abide by it then they deserve to get slapped with a fine. Could they relax a little? Yes. But, once they do that the players will stretch the limits again. There are much larger issues to knock the league for.

I can tell you we would be looking for a new commissioner at least until this one out of ICU and the rebuild of the NFL Headquarters would be under way as we speak.

Actually, everybody wore black shoes back then. I am kinda surprised by this fine. Although the NFL requires teams choose a base color for all to wear (either black or white), this year they have allowed players to wear team color cleats (basically because of Nike). Maybe they were fined because their cleats had no blue, I don't know.

Well orange is a secondary color then just like those God awful orange jerseys.

Seriously I understand the league wanting to maintain some kind of uniformity but sometimes their hypocrisy annoys me. They have a lot bigger things to be concerned with than a guys choice of shoe color. Besides they look better than pink!
