Cutler Needs To Get The Boot......................

More often that is. Okay, how many of you thought this was another anti-Cutler thread. Come one. Be honest and raise your hands.

    Cutler can't get a (boot)leg up

Dan Pompei On the NFL 11:18 p.m. CDT, October 27, 2012

Jay Cutler ran a bootleg Monday and threw a touchdown pass. And the crashing sound that followed was from Bears fans falling off their bar stools in taverns across the greater Chicago area. Cutler has not been asked to bootleg much since he has been a Bear.

When he was with the Broncos, making plays outside the pocket is what he did best. According to STATS, Cutler made 127 throws outside the pocket in 37 games. He threw for 20 touchdowns on those plays and his passer rating outside the pocket was 136.7. He has a 91.9 passer rating outside the pocket this year, but he has thrown only 11 such passes.

Jeremy Bates coached Cutler in Denver and this year was brought to Chicago to be the de facto passing game coordinator. You would think with his influence, Cutler would be outside the pocket more, and better outside the pocket. Bates acknowledges Cutler is very effective on the move.

"Jay is very athletic," Bates said. "He was a shortstop in high school, and he can throw on the run."

Bates also expressed an appreciation of the bootleg, and indicated he would like to run five or six of them in some games.

"I think we are doing it more," he said. "We have it in the game plan. You move the quarterback's launching pad, it makes it tough on the defenses for pursuing the run. There are a lot of positives."

So why has Cutler thrown outside the pocket so rarely? Bates was a little evasive. He said bootlegs don't always make sense based on how defensive ends and linebackers are aligned. It also probably made more sense to highlight them in Mike Shanahan's offense because defenses had to honor the stretch run plays Shanahan favors. That made the boot an effective counter.

But if the Bears don't emphasize moving the pocket and bootlegs with Cutler, they are ignoring low hanging fruit.

    Numbers games: Penalty problem

The Bears have done so many things well this season that it has been easy to overlook the fact they have committed too many penalties.

They are averaging 7.67 penalties per game, which was fifth highest in the NFL through seven weeks. They have had a negative penalty yardage differential against every team they have played, and they are at minus-93 yards against opponents for the season.

You can't blame the defense for this problem. It has been hit with 10.33 penalty yards per game. That's the second fewest in the league.

Special teams have not been as efficient. That unit has given up 12.5 penalty yards per game — fourth most in the NFL.

Most of the problems have been on offense. It's giving up an average of 29.17 penalty yards. That ranks the Bears offense fourth worst.

Their most frequent transgression has been the false start. The Bears have had 15 — second to the Cowboys with 16.

What's puzzling about this is the Bears have played in a loud stadium with a hostile crowd only once all season. Offensive linemen have committed 10 of the false starts. They also have been responsible for six of the Bears' seven offensive holding penalties.

The Bears' most penalized player, by a wide margin, has been right tackle Gabe Carimi (eight). None of his teammates has more than three penalties.

    Front office chess: Good timing

It is one thing to sign the right veteran player. It is another thing to sign him at the right time. The Bears appear to have done that with a few players this year with the latest example being Zack Bowman.

They let him go in the offseason as coaches were frustrated that he hadn't realized his potential. After the Vikings cut Bowman and he sat out the first five weeks of the season, the Bears re-signed him.

They may have acquired him at the perfect time because Bowman may be more focused and motivated than ever, given how the year went for him. Against the Lions, Bowman played wonderfully on special teams.

Chilo Rachal is another example of a player who may have come to the Bears at the right time in his career. A former second-round pick who struggled with the 49ers, Rachal has had a new lease on his career in Chicago. He clearly is happy to be here, and it shows in his dedication.

The ultimate example is Brandon Marshall. He has been a complete professional behind the scenes at Halas Hall and quickly has become a team leader who has raised the bar.

Marshall made a lot of waves in Denver and Miami, but since he has been undergoing treatment for borderline personality disorder he appears to be a different man.

There's no way to disagree with the fact that Cutler can make plays with his feet as well as his arm and from outside the pocket on the run. That's what made John Elway a HOF'er and it's one of the main reasons why the Broncos drafted Cutler over other QBs to begin with despite the fact that he'd never QB'd a team with a winning record. He was to be the new John Elway here.....and he was until McDipshit came along and traded him. Good for us but very bad for them.

Ya' believe that now Mikey? You must lurk every once in a while I know you do.

Anyway we need to take better advantage of his ability to do that. Last year it was those kind of plays that sparked some big wins after he decided to throw Martz game plans under the bus and do it his way. So let him loose a little more and if we do I think he'll add at least one more score per game off of big plays. Plays where because he buys more time that way he can get a deep ball of to Hester when he breaks loose or to Marshall who knows how to get open for him on that type of a play.

Let's be a little less predictable in the passing game from now on and try some stuff we haven't been. We have some pretty smart WRs who can use their intelligence to know how to get open on those boots and scrambles. Let's throw a little Aaron Rodgers kind of stuff into the mix and start opening up the scoring a little more. The defense can't hold every team at bay.

    Penalties:

Time for this to stop now. We've taken some really dumb ones too and my boy Carimi has been involved with most of them. You can give him a few passes so far based on inexperience but by midseason that needs to stop and it's approaching midseason. Time for him to sharpen up his game.

The STeams guys have got to watch it too. I'm afraid that Hester will finally break a long TD and it'll get called back on a penalty. Here again Toub has had to deal with a lot of turnover but by midseason these guys should be rounding into form and Hester should be getting his game back. We depend on those guys for at least a couple of TD returns a year and we aren't getting it so far.

    Front Office:

Good pickup on the Bowman thing. He's not gonna give us much help at CB and we don't really need it but his STeams play will help. He's one of the guys whose been on all four phases of the STeams and he knows what he's doing out there. He's an excellent gunner and he showed that with his fumble recovery this past week. Even with McManis healthy I hope they can keep him active. Sit a TE, we aren't using all of them anyway, or either Spencer or EWill.

Rachal has an opportunity to accomplish what was expected of him when he was drafted as high as he was. He would have rated nearly as good the year he came out as DeCastro did this year if he's played one more year of college ball. Rachal came out a year early. We can see that he can run block but he still whiffs on too many plays and his pass blocking is still kind of crude but with some good coaching he can get better. It's apparent that he's the type of OG Tice likes so he'll get every opportunity to make it here.

Marshall? What's to say that hasn't already been said. He's the jewel in Emery's offseason acquisition crown and if we make it to the SB on the backs of him and Cutler then you're gonna see all kinds of stories about how Phil practically stole him from Miami and they wouldn't be too far wrong either.

Coming from you, soul? Nah, I don't really expect you to post an anti-Cutty thread. Not with how everything's been going. No offense or anything, but I know that you're one of his biggest fans.

I have been waiting for more bootlegs. C'mon, he runs them so well, why not throw a lot more out there?

Not so much a fan Zel as a defender of the faith. The guy is the best QB we've had since Sid Luckman and I'm not gonna throw him under the bus just because he pouts or won't play nicey nice with the media. They make way too much of it anyway.

So he's the kid in kindergarten who has to wear the "runs with scissors" tag on his shirt. I don't care. Just lead the team and win games. Maybe I appreciate him because I'm not all that much different myself. I'm passed caring what everyone else thinks of me. My exes beat that out of me long ago, LOL. My guilt buttons don't operate anymore. It's a great defense mechanism believe me.

Yes, let him loose more often. The guy is a great play making QB if they'll let him be. There's a lot of Favre in him and a lot of Elway too. They both pulled their share of boners but they won championships and made the HOF and so can Cutler if they'll take the cuffs off him from time to time. He hasn't exactly been blessed with the best OCs for his style of play but you don't ever hear him complaining about that from a personal perspective.

He's really a good team guy and he wants to win games as a team not just for Jay Cutler. That's where he's a whole lot different than Favre was yet the NFL made an icon out of him. I'll take Jay's brutal honesty over Favre's selfishness and ego mongering any day. That guy turned out to be a total jerk.

Oh, I believe ya, soul. He's a great leader, but nobody would doubt that he can get, what's the word, moody? He comes across as cold at times, but honestly I don't care. I want him to go out, win, stay healthy, and most importantly, bring us a championship. He's good, really good.

Jay had a bad game until the 4th quarter where the entire team decided to show up and play. The OL was crap, the running game was good for one drive and then disappeared. The panthers played good enough and should have won but they could not finish the bears. I also saw poor tackling and they is no way Carolina should be converting as many 3rd downs as they did in this game. The only thing that makes me shake my head in this game is the squib kicks on the kick off.

Hey this reminded me of the Game against Arizona where Mike Brown ran in a fumble I believe. Hester ran back a punt and the O may have score 1 TD.We ended up winning a game we should have lost and thats what good teams do.I know the Pick by Jennings was awesome, but the TD catch Davis made was key because that was a bullet and he used just hands to make that catch.Davis has been up and down this year but without that catch we`re screwed.GO BEARS!!!!!!!!

I thought I was watching two different games. The first game consisted of the first & fourth quarters and the second was in the middle. Very strange although neither the Lions nor G.B. impressed in their games. I'd like to think it was a matter of playing down to your competition as opposed to having their heads totally up their collective asses for half a game.
