Cutler: "we just kept hitting them and hitting them and hitting them"

When it was "Gut Check Time" this team had what it takes to be a winner.
This team is definitely a work-in-progress. But great teams find a way to win, especially on days where everything goes wrong. I think that says a lot about the "heart" of the players on this Bears team, and about the coaching staff.
My son had made a good observation yesterday. As we were leaving Soldier Field he said we were really blessed the way our schedule was this year. With the exception of going to Lambeau in week-2, we've had easier opponents this first half of the season, and that has given the team a GREAT opportunity to get ready for the tough opponents coming in the second half of the season.
This team has had a lot of changes this past off-season (we all know that), and it's been a great opportunity for the team to adjust to the new key personnel, the new OC, the new playbook. These are changes that sometimes take more than 1 season to adjust to. But I believe this team will continue to improve and adjust, all the way to the playoffs. And at that point, it will be ready to make a serious Super Bowl run. This year.

The Panthers did what losing teams do in squandering a 19-7 lead in the fourth quarter.
"Those first 31/2 quarters were just ugly," said Cutler, who added that the bruised ribs he suffered Monday against the Lions were not an issue.
Gould missed a 33-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter, but after a defensive stop, Cutler connected with Davis for the touchdown.
On the next play from scrimmage, Steve Smith slipped, and Jennings hauled in a high pass for an easy pick and score. It was the Bears' sixth interception return for a touchdown, a club record for a season and an NFL record through seven games.
Suddenly, the Bears led in a game that looked lost. Driving for the victory, Newton (20 of 39, 314 yards) missed Smith (seven catches, 118 yards) in the end zone, and the Bears needed only a Gould field goal to win after Medlock's 45-yarder.
What happened looked as easy as pitch-and-catch. Cutler, who finished 19 of 28 for 186 yards, hit four passes to Brandon Marshall and one to Earl Bennett. They were quick slants that easily moved the Bears downfield.
"They were playing one coverage, and we just kept hitting them and hitting them and hitting them," Cutler said. "That's pretty much it."
That is exactly how the Panthers (1-6) felt.

If only we could combine the Bears defense with the Blackhawks' offense, would would win the SB the next 10 years in a row...

Zif -- You make a good point. Most NFL players are ill equiped to stop a 100 mile per hour puck.

Webb and Carimi can't stop a 10 mile an hour man right now.

You're wrong.
Webb and Carimi can't stop a 10 mile an hour feather right now. Even if they both double team that feather.

I don't know why but when I read that I thought: Put Webb on skates and make him the goalie for the Blackhawks, they don't need to focus on getting a better D-line then. Webb and his taco's will make it impossible to score.

Then why is Carimi ending up getting pushed back into Cutler and on his ass so much? I thought he must be wearing them?

That only works when you use these games as an opportunity to improve and they haven't improved one bit offensively. They've gotten worse. This game was worse then even the Packer game.
Any good defense would certainly have adjusted to those quick slants and stopped that last drive far short of FG range. Carolina didn't and that's one of the reasons they lost.
Does anyone really think that would happen against a Houston or a SF or any other team who wasn't pretty much a defensive bottom feeder? Up until the end they were chewing us up defensively yet because of their own failure to adjust and the talent of three guys we managed a game saving drive and winning FG.
The schedule gets a lot tougher now and if that offense doesn't pick it up we could easily get buried and end up winning just two or three more games. The defense can't keep winning it every week.

Everybody flipped on the Bears in '06 after the Arizona game. All that is missing is a funny news conference clip.
The good news is that we play to the level of our competition. The bad news is we play to the level of our competition.
Oh, and don't for a second think that the best aspect of the Panthers ISN'T their Dline.
