Bears linemen responsible for only 2 of 6 sacks allowed Sunday
This is pretty much what I saw, or thought I saw yesterday.
LINK to the article Dan Pompei's film session Bears linemen responsible for only 2 of 6 sacks allowed Sunday
Jay Cutler was sacked six times Sunday, which usually is grounds for putting the offensive line in solitary confinement with no visitation privileges.
But a review of the tape revealed the big boys didn't play all that poorly. In fact, the linemen were responsible for only two of the sacks.
Here is what happened on each of the sacks.
Sack 1: Tight end Matt Spaeth is at fault, getting his feet tangled with J'Marcus Webb's and subsequently getting bulled back and beaten for a sack.
Sack 2: Cutler holds the ball for 5 seconds before Greg Hardy finally comes free after being blocked well by Webb. This sack is completely on the QB.
Sack 3: Cutler holds the ball for 4.2 seconds and is at fault again. Gabe Carimi cuts Hardy on what is supposed to be the back side of a screen pass to Matt Forte. DT Dwan Edwards prevents the possibility of a completion by getting in the way of Forte. Instead of throwing the ball at Forte's feet, Cutler double clutches and gets nailed by Hardy, who had time to get up off the ground and get to Cutler.
Sack 4: Webb could have blocked Frank Alexander better, but Cutler steps up and is in position to avoid the sack. However, instead of escaping in an open lane to his right, Cutler steps up to his left into an oncoming rush and a sack by Edwards. This was Cutler's fault more than Webb's.
Sack 5: Guard Chilo Rachal gets the blame for stepping inside on Hardy and slipping as Hardy goes outside shoulder.
Sack 6: Carimi gets beat on a speed rush by Charles Johnson for a sack/strip.
Here is what else we learned after a closer look.
Grading key: Grades are between 0 and 10 with 0 being complete failure and 10 being perfect.
Offensive line
Grade: 6
Each of the offensive linemen had a bad moment or two. Roberto Garza might have had more than a couple. He failed to get to defenders on a few occasions and had another false start, his third in two weeks.
Lance Louis and Webb graded out the highest.
Quarterback
Grade: 4.5
Cutler did what he had to do in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers made it very easy for him. He did not have any spectacular plays.
He should have had a first-quarter touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall, as he had plenty of time with an eight-man protection and Marshall had beaten Josh Norman. Cutler underthrew the ball.
Forgotten play: on the two-point conversion attempt, it appeared Cutler and Marshall had a miscommunication.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

They can play "it's the qb's fault with the sacks" and that's fine, Jay is known for that lately it seems. But when I see guys getting owned one-on-one out there it's a bit much. Guys getting knocked on their cans, getting single moved, bull rushed and just beat off the snap then there is a problem. THEY PLAYED HORRIBLE.

Carimi is getting owned and bull rushed at times. Louis (who's had a solid season for the most part) did look bad a few times. Webb and Rachal looked pretty solid to me most of the day. If either of them got bull rushed yesterday, then I missed it (and I just finished watching the game again a few minutes ago (also, watched it yesterday evening on DVR after watching the game live at Soldier Field).
I get it that folks are madder than hell over the butt-ugly game yesterday. I'm not disputing that the game was ugly. But the oline looked decent most of the day to me - and the run blocking is looking pretty good too. Yes, there were a handful of really bad plays by offensive linemen.

yeah, I'm not buying it all either. From a technical perspective, you might say two out of six are linemen but the QB is being harrassed all the time and that affects him. Now where I think it is Cutlers fault is that he seems to be affected more than most. Having said that though, I think that is a recent phenomenon with him. He used to stand tall in the pocket. After seeing Grossman and now Cutler evolving into a more skittish play, I am convinced that this can permanently change a QBs play.
If I were a GM, I would make sure that my Ol was solid BEFORE bringing in s stud QB or that QB may get de-studded.

Yes I think Jay is skittish and it's disrupting his mechanics. As Mo would say "he's been getting David Carr'ed" out there. Is every game vs an inferior team going to give a blow-by blow excuse for each and every sack? ? LMFAO.
Ok, so the run-blocking was good-it was good last year too and we still had piss-poor pass pro out there AND the lowest rated LT. It's like saying to a boxer that he's got a great uppercut, too bad he can't ever set it up and USE it because he can't slip a jab!
I can see a bad game but out of 5 linemen ONE should have at least been average. It resides in the play-calling, available talent and using too much pixie dust.
Oh and if they handle the Titans THEY SHOULD. It's not "oh look see they are getting better again". They show me something vs the Texans or Niners and I'll be the first to say they are truly improving.

OK fair enough so which two are on the line? I'm unclear on that. FWIW here's my take on it.
#1 - Definitely one on the line. In his role as a TE Spaeth is primarily a third OT. Getting is feet tangled doesn't let him off the hook.
#2 - Yes I'd agree. That's one on Cutler for holding the ball too long. So now maybe we can get him another receiver who can get open and catch so that in the event that Marshall is covered he may have another option. Bennett might be nice. Yes I like that idea. Let's start Bennett next week then he'll have at least two decent choices.
#3 - Yes, Cutler needs to throw the ball away in that situation but when Carimi knocks a guy down it might be nice if he didn't also end up on his ass. If he stays on or gets to his feet Hardy never gets a second chance. So 1/2 each.
#4 - Same as #3, 1/2 each.
#5 - That's on Rachal.
#6 - That's on Carimi.
So let's tally them up. 1 on Spaeth, 1 1/2 on Carimi, 1 on Rachal, 1/2 on Webb and 2 on Cutler. So I have it reversed on my card. Two and Cutler and four on the line. Even if I take away the 1/2 on Carimi on the botched screen pass it's still more than just two on the line.
I'm not letting Cutler off the hook either. Not getting rid of the ball on that botched screen pass was pretty inexcusable. He's not a rookie QB and he should know better than that. But for God's sake get the man receivers who can get open and catch. I'm surprise he doesn't have crick in his neck from looking to his left so much.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

The line was not good by any means, and Cutler's scrambling wasn't because he was trying to get in better position for a pass. However, I'm tired of blaming the line, (btw, JABF, I thought i saw one that Webb was flat out beat) Tice is the subject of my ire on this problem. Quick passes and running the ball more will ease the pressure on the line, and get them into a flow. Too bad we didn't pick up Schottenheimer in the offseason. He's not doing great with the Rams, but if you see some of the lack of talent he's had to work with (Chad Pennington being the obvious/only exception), you'd be surprised. It's no surprise to me that since he was run out of the Jets, Sanchez has regressed, and Bradford is doing better for STL...

Webb was flat out beat. I saw it that way too.
And I agree that this is not a good oline. I'm just hoping it's "good enough" this season, and it gets fixed in the off-season.

I really think it is. It's just a matter of fact we're likely to give up a sack or two a game (which is not bad by any means) naturally. With Cutler holding onto the ball too long, which I suspect is from Hester and a few others not getting good seperation and being predictable on offense, that the line is overloaded by the blitz. To add to the holding onto the ball too long thing, I suspect our routes are taking a little too long to develop. If you look at it, Rodgers, Big Ben and Tom Brady have worse offensive lines, and I think they make it work by doing exactly what Tice should be doing. Other than QB play, none of those teams have as much/more talent than the Bears, so I'm no longer buying into "well the line is what's holding us back" logic. BTW, why can't we ever try a draw? That might work wonders because of what other teams expect of us.

Jay summed it up we went to quicker routes so why wait till da fourth quarter to adjust to what works//man when you fail you can change what you are doing//like mental note the 49er's wont cave in the fourth quarter so start playing smarter//geez give the defense a rest already you need ten yards to advance stop the huge drops and be productive with your three downs//you get three plus a down you stay on the field the other team gets on their heals and guess what those big plays are there
