Exclamation Now Cutler has done it.....gasp....he's muttered under his breath!

Muttering under his breath! Can it get any worse?

(the guy's been beaten like a drum these past two weeks.....after enduring 6 sacks and booing fans, I'd be muttering too)

Allow Jay Cutler to mutter with impunity

Let's assume the worst-case scenario: that Jay Cutler said exactly what it looked like he said as he walked off the field at halftime Sunday of the Chicago Bears' 23-22 victory over the Carolina Panthers. For the sake of this post, let's agree that Cutler profanely objected to the boos he heard from the home crowd at Soldier Field.

    Cutler

To which I say: So what?

Cutler has earned plenty of scrutiny in our hyper-quick and highly sensitive world of presumed decorum. Much of it has been earned. But are we now no longer able to grant Cutler the courtesy of muttering under his breath with impunity?

That's the implication of any criticism Cutler has received for this latest episode, which became a hot topic Sunday afternoon after several websites posted video or gifs and played lipreader. I get it. Some of Cutler's previous objectionable actions and attitude,
for which we've hammered him on this blog, have left him with little breathing room moving forward. But I feel like any sliver he has remaining should be granted in this instance.

It would be one thing if Cutler profanely criticized fans during a postgame news conference or on his
Monday afternoon radio show on ESPN 1000. He didn't. Instead, he has repeatedly said the Bears deserved to be booed based on their first-half performance.

People must own everything they say, be it in frustration or after much thought. But it's also fair to judge the words in context. It seems reasonable to expect Cutler to be grouchy and sensitive after taking six sacks in the first half against a team that is now 1-6.

He refused to be drawn into a discussion about it on the radio, which some will interpret as a passive admission that he said some things that weren't nice about the fans who booed him. For the record, here is what he said when pressed: "Is this court? Are we in court right now? Are you a judge and jury? … I'm not going to get involved in that. I can't control these things, what websites say. We should have been booed. Rightfully so, we got booed. We've got to get better and that's that."

Over time, Jay Cutler has given us plenty of real and legitimate reasons to question his leadership and on-field personality. We don't need to lipread and interpret under-the-breath mutterings to find more.

Hard to believe anyone would get down on him over this. Seifert wrote a good article here. Cutler's been beaten and abused the past two weeks. I'd be muttering too.

Yeah but not with this shot Benji. This thread was trying to defend him and put a more positive spin on things but you choose the negative as a counter. And anyway I didn't know you could read lips.

You know fuck it. You're right. As long as there's a Cutler there will be a Cutler hater somewhere out there so I'll just keep my opinions to myself from now on.

You all enjoy yourselves debating whether he's "plays well with others" today or "runs with scissors". To me there are far more important things to worry about than what Jay Cutler did today or yesterday or any day. Adios.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Real simple, doesn't matter. Fans had a right to boo that shit performance, and he had a right to not be happy w/the fans or the teams performance. But afterwards he said they had a right to boo that the O's performance was booable so now it's a none issue.

Reality is Cutler doesn't give two shakes so why should we? He's a jag, but as long as he's helping the team win I don't care. When we start passing on bona fide better QB's b/c of him, let me know b/c then I'll start to give a shit.

One when was it a crime to be negative? Either way you look at it anyone who takes a pov to an extreme is going to get f-Ed by posters for example db54 ultimate homer and nagurski ultimate hater. Then their is me the perfect one lol

two cutler might be a jag but he is our jag and I believe in his abilities and intentions. He brought all this scrutiny on himself and has to realize he is a leader on a 7-1 team in the Chicago market so this stuff will be topics all the time. I'm glad we have a tough sob that shrugs media trash away

I just thought it was outrageous that this would be an issue with anyone. What a guy says under his breath like this is his own business. I also thought Jay took the high road when asked about it.

    Urlacher supports Jay Cutler

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said Tuesday he supported Jay Cutler, who allegedly mumbled an obscenity about booing fans at Soldier Field, because Urlacher thinks players should be able to respond to hecklers.

"If the fans want to boo, why can't we say what we want to say?" Urlacher said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "They're allowed to say what they want, so can we."

It's uncertain what Cutler muttered under his breath as he walked off the field for halftime Sunday. The fans were booing after a half that saw Cutler sacked six times, throwing an interception and generating a quarterback rating of 18.1 before leading the Bears to victory in the second half.

Cutler refused to clarify his remarks -- which were guessed at by lip readers watching Fox's coverage -- during the "The Jay Cutler Show" on Monday on ESPN 1000, but he did say he was mad at the Bears' offense and not the fans.

"I told (Brandon Marshall) when we got into the locker room, he's like, 'They booed us.' I was like, 'I know, I would boo us, too,' " Cutler said Monday. "It was ugly, and we didn't snap out of it until 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

"Rightfully so, we got booed. Chicago fans know it was a lousy performance. We know it's a lousy performance, and hopefully when we come back on the Sunday night game (against theHouston Texans on Nov. 11), we'll do better for them."

But Cutler wouldn't join the debate about what he said, which was a topic on many websites and other outlets.
"I'm not going to get involved with it," Cutler said. "I can't control these things, what websites say. So we should have been booed. Rightfully so, we got booed and we have to get better. That's that."

Urlacher knows one way to stop the booing, which hasn't been a chronic problem this season for the 6-1 Bears.
"Hell no, I don't like (the booing)," Urlacher said. "I'm sure no one likes getting booed.

"The way to fix it is (for the team) to play better, I know that much. If you don't want your fans to boo, play better."
But Urlacher also understands that Cutler has become a lightning rod for critics.

"He can't win," Urlacher said. "The guy can't win, that's all there is to it. The craziest thing to me is people get on our head coach (Lovie Smith) because he doesn't say enough to the media, because he doesn't show enough emotion. Jay shows a ton of emotion, and people get on him as well. What's the difference?

"I don't get it. I'm behind Jay. I'm behind coach. I don't get the criticism of both of them. (Booing is) going to happen, we know that. We have to play better and they won't do that."
