Urlacher has yet to be exposed this season, I see no reason to not resign him. Knowledge like he has is invaluable, as long as L. Boogie is playing like he is we are just fine. I say sign him barring any injuries, you can't get anyone better.
One thing is certain though, it was a huge mistake to not find him a protege about 3 years ago, let him pass off his knowledge to someone. Oh well too late now
I want him re-signed also but at the right price. He no longer can be one of the top paid players on this team. If he is we just taking backward steps

Since the injury his play has been probably average. BUT his smarts and intelligence keep him above average. They should have found a successor long ago. There needs to be a huge push next season not only to find an eventual successor but to make the entire team smarter and distribute some of the intelligence, playcalling, and positioning to others. As when Kreutz left others picked up the leadership mantle as well.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

4-3 Middle Linebacker: Brian Urlacher (CHI) – $10m
Maybe it’s lingering effects of injury, or maybe it’s father time catching up, but Urlacher is not playing like the player we’ve become accustomed to seeing. In fact only Rey Maualuga and Chase Blackburn rank lower in our middle linebacker grades with nobody grading more poorly against the run. It’s not that he is missing tackles but that he’s not in position to make them.
If he's unwilling to resign for a favorable price, i say let him walk. This is a good team with a short window and IMO they cant afford to just pay this guy to call out plays on the field and make an occasional play. Guys all over the league take pay cuts to help their teams. I was really pissed at Brian the last time he demanded an extension when he wasnt playing that good due to injury. No way it should happen again. Its not a popular opinion but i hope hes gone if he cant resign for a cheap price. Love Brian and his legacy as another great Bears MLB but i want to see this team win it all while they still can. But like said, lets see how he looks by seasons end.

he's not playing bad. His play is good enough for a NFL starter.
Now you add the leadership. If he can keep this play into next season, he needs to get a new contract

He missed all pre season with the injury and it takes time to get back in shape. He knee IS getting better and his ability to call the "D" is unsurpassed in the NFL. I want to see how the rest of the season goes before jumping to any conclusions about his future.

He hasn't played bad? How many big plays do you remember him making? How many plays in general? I love Urlacher, one of my top five favorite historical Bears of all time and my favorite that I remember watching, but he has pretty much been a non factor this season, sorry to say.

Sadly, what you say seems true. One of my and "everybody's" favorites. The OP had it right. Walter's last year was sad, Butkus hobbling on nonfunctional knees, Hampton doing the same. Age and injury, injury and age. <sigh>
Is there much chance of Urlacher getting much better as he recovers more from the recent knee surgery? That surgery was perhaps 4 months ago. I don't know the procedure done let alone its usual recovery rate in a 35 year old. IF (big if) what we see now is the fully recovered Brian Urlacher then, very very sadly, the FO should not re-sign him for even fairly big dollars (a actual $3 M/year 2-year deal, packaged as a 4 year deal with 2M bonus, 1 M first year and 3 M second year and 10 M third and fourth year salary, with a nice sounding 26 M face-saver contract perhaps). Anybody know the projected knee recovery for him?
And indeed, the FO will/should look in FA for a 'good buy' and/or in rounds 4/5 for a LB if a guy they love doesn't drop to them in rounds 1/2. Any hope for Thomas or Hayes?

I just think it's a bit different.
He isn't that Top3 MLB anymore. His play on the field has become average. He still plays on the "starter level" in the NFL. He is still a great leader and needed because of this.
He hasn't had those big plays so far, but we don't need him to have those. Briggs, Tillman, Jennings stood out with turnovers so far. Front four comes up with pressure to the QB.
Some are just not happy with his current play because of the past and the expectiations that come with it. He was a beast for sure, he isn't anymore. On the other side, he is still usefull and not a liability. He hasn't had those wow moments so far, but do you remember some plays were he was plain and simple bad? Were he made big mistakes that cost us big yards or points? I can't
he will not get an extension before the season is over. He will not retire before the season is over. It would be a wise decision to retire after a SB Win. On the other side, he won't retire with a bad outcome of the season.
