Tillman May Not Play Sunday If Wife Goes Into Labor

As the Bears prepare for their prime time matchup against the Texans on Sunday night, one of the team’s best defensive players might not be in attendance.

Cornerback Charles Tillman, who is having a career year through eight games, told 670 The Score’s Laurence Holmes he may miss Sunday’s game if his wife goes into labor.

“The wife is due any day, so hopefully this baby can stay in until after the game on Sunday,” Tillman said. “I hope she stays in – I’m having another girl. Monday, for sure, but if she comes Sunday, I think I’m going to have to be at the hospital Sunday. So, I hope she stays in until after Sunday.”

Florio: Tillman Should Play Sunday Even If Wife Goes Into Labor

When Charles Tillman broke the news on 670 The Score that he may not play Sunday if his wife goes into labor, the news didn’t quite sit well with one NFL expert.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio joined The McNeil and Spiegel Show today and said he wouldn’t agree with Tillman’s decision to sit out.

“This may not not be the most popular position in the world, but I fall into the ‘This is the life we’ve chosen’ category,” Florio told The Score’s Laurence Holmes and Matt Abbatacola, who were sitting in for McNeil and Spiegel. “There are ways nowadays – there are technologies that you can plan when you’re going to have a baby. There are four fairly important months out of the year when you work 16 Sundays and you get paid a lot of money to be available those 16 Sundays. You try to avoid being in a position where you have to make that decision on Sunday that you’re getting paid a lot of money to be available to play a football game. It’s easy for me to say this because I’ve never been and never will be in this position, but I think you gotta show up and do your job. Guys who are over seas don’t get to fly home if they’ve got a spouse going into labor, and they get paid a heck of a lot less money.

Well I guess we all do but if not then we'll have to deal with it. I can't say that I blame the guy for wanting to be there for the birth of his daughter.

Tough to lose a guy like Peanut but Hayden is a very good ball player too.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Big difference between being over seas defending our country and playing a game Florio. Bad comparison even though both are jobs

I can understand his sentiments, especially after the health problems his other child had.

Well, at the risk of sounding like a heal (and keep in mind, I am a BIG Tillman fan), I kind of agree with Florio. If it's that important to him to be there, then take he in tonight and put her on a Pitocin drip and allow he to be induced. Baby is then here by Saturday morning and Peanut is playing Sunday night.

Many of my friends have actually scheduled their child's birthday (which seems creepy to me). I'm sure they could have easily scheduled a C-section for Saturday so Charles wouldn't have to miss the game, but if his wife didn't want to have a C-section, it's her perogative. Hopefully the baby can wait until Monday.

    This.

His other child, born with heart problems, ended up with a heart transplant. I respect him for being with his wife as this child is born. There are things more important in life than a football game.

Ya hate to be a cod, but Florio has a point; Tillman's I have to be at work schedule is 1 Sunday over a 16-20 week schedule. Most expecting parents have normally planned for that child to be born and were working at it; so make sure that the birth doesn't fall into those 16-20 weeks; OR if they do, schedule the enducement so it's not on one of those Sunday's.

That being said, it is what it is, and he should be there for his wife and the newborn.
