Cutler: Bears offense no match for defense

This is what, our 4th or 5th offensive scheme during the Lovie Smith era?

Cutler: Bears offense no match for defense

By Fred Mitchell, Tribune reporter1:37 p.m. CST, November 7, 2012

The notion that the Chicago Bears offense will become as dynamic as its defense this season is unreasonable to expect, according to quarterback Jay Cutler.

“It’s not going to happen. We’re eight, nine years behind those guys,” Cutler said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “They have been in the same system a long time. We just have to be able to focus on ourselves and every guy has got to get a little bit better each week, every day in practice. If we get a little bit better… we’ll be better. That’s just our goal.”

The Bears (7-1) host the Houston Texans (7-1) Sunday night at Soldier Field.

“From the top down, their front seven is good,” Cutler said. “Very well coached, sound defense, don’t let out big plays, tough against the run, really good on third down. They present a lot of challenges.”

After a slow start last Sunday against the Titans, Cutler wound up completing 19 of 26 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns to Brandon Marshall.

“It’s easy to predict what (defense) they are going to be in when you’re up 20 points and they have got to stop the run,” Cutler said. “We’re going to throw it outside if we’re going to make some plays and we’re going to get one-on-one match-ups. Playing with a lead makes things a lot easier.”

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Pretty accurate assessment I'd say but it shouldn't take even 8 or 9 games to at least get some kind of consistency going on offense. When drives stall out more often than not and you end up settling for FGs far more than you should given the players you have the folks ask questions and want to know why.

Question like "when you have a very good RB whose averaging over 5 ypc why aren't you running him more"? Or, "when you just went out and spent $7mil in guarantees for a good power back who could blow the ball into the endzone from down deep why are you calling pass plays on first down so often when you're around or inside the ten"? "Why do we need 5 TEs on the roster but in total they have just 13 catches in 8 games." "Shouldn't we hire more OTs if all we need 'em for is to help pass block"? "One TE scores a TD every 5 times he catches the ball, could we throw to him more often because we need to score more points than we have been"?

It's like an "Enquiring Minds Want To Know" commercial. These are not crazy questions from crazy fans who just don't understand the game. They're pretty logical, common sense questions that people who do know a little about football are asking. Jay we know you don't have all of the answers but you do have Tice's ear so maybe you could ask them for us.

If I was around and listening to his radio show I'd probably be on there popping these at him over the phone or in person if he'd let me in the studio. I don't think any of are expecting this offense to be as polished as the offenses of team like Packers who been playing it for several years with the same HC and QB but it could be a lot more polished than it is.

I think it's time to stop some of the experimentation and do more of what we do well and a whole lot less of what we don't. Pretend the playbook is like a cookbook and call up the favorite dishes the whole offense loves and ask for seconds over more often, don't call the brussels sprouts tasting plays so often and tear the ones out the book that make them gag and head for the crapper to toss their cookies. By now that shouldn't be all that hard to do.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

What concerns me the most about this game is that when Cutler is pressured, bad things happen. He kind of melts down and then the team follows. Houston knows this, and they have the ability (and desire) to pressure Cutler. We can't stop a strong DL. Haven't been able to all year and don't see this changing now.

Given this, we need to win this game with a better game plan that takes this into account, and Cutler needs to keep his head screwed on right. Take what they give us, look for their weaknesses and our successes during game time and adjust accordingly. Then re-adjust when they adjust. Repeat as necessary.

We can win this game -- the game plan needs to play to our strengths and Cutler needs to play like a franchise QB. That doesn't always mean completing long ball after long ball. It may mean grinding it out, taking what we can and wearing out their D. Also, Tice needs to give Cutler pictures of all our recievers so he recognizes them out there and realizes that they also play for us and can actually catch the ball (well, ok, maybe not Hester)

You know, I really and truly believe that we will win this game. I think our defense is going to have to help out a lot with creating fumbles and snagging errant passes. Our strength is our defense, and hopefully Baby Peanut will be able to hold off being born until after the game so we can amass those turnovers like we always do. I like Lovie's philosophy of "Our defense is an offense."

You know what? The other day on NFL Network, I looked to see who the league leaders were in sacks allowed. Did you know that the Packers have given up more sacks than we have? And didn't the Packers thump the Texans 42-24 a few weeks ago? This team can do the same things against the Texans that the Packers did. We will have to be in max protection mode most of the game, run the ball at least 35 times for like 160 yards, and pass the ball just enough to keep their defense off balance.

Think of this. Do you see that the Texans are just as human as the Bears? We did better against both the Packers, Titans, and the Jaguars than what they were able to put up against them. We might have only scored 10 points on Green Bay, but we did not give up 42 points to them either. And then the Jags and Titans were total and complete beatdowns. We also have homefield advantage, so we'll have the 4th Phase working in our favor. Bottom line, it's these kinds of games that people like me get up for. If you're not up for competing against the best, you're nowhere. I know I have mention that I am a Yankees fan several times, but I'll say this: I am never afraid to play an opponent just because they're great. Greatness is something the Packers know all about and the Bears are trying to learn. If we go into the game on December 12 against Green Bay at Soldier Field with the mentality that we're going to take names and kick ass, we'll win. The same goes for the next two weeks versus the Texans and the 49ers. We can win, but we have to believe that we will win first.
