While I have no qualms with McManis's play (I actually don't know a hell of a lot about him other than what I've read about him in this thread), it still gnaws at me that we let a guy like Clutts go who was great blocker as as FB and could even catch a pass from time to time if called upon, though that was certainly not his forte.

Clutts might be the most over rated player to ever find himself on the field and never touch the ball. He was great, but he was hardly the reason that Cutler had time to pass and Forte had holes to run in.
I liked him, but he was hardly a necessity. It was a good trade, we upgraded the whole ST's, even if our situational blocking went down some.

Even the announcers said it was "a race to see who was going to block that one."

Nah, I'd MUCH rather have Clutts. But Tice wants what he wants. At least we got something of utility out of the trade.

Really? Despite the fact that we apparently went out and wasted a draft pick on Evan Rodriguez, who from time to time makes cameo appearances in games, to replace Clutts in Tice's offense? Clutts was a far better blocker and cost a lot less than Rodriguez is going to cost the Bears.

Given a choice between the two, I would have kept Clutts but in the end I'm ok with the trade and we may still see more upside before it's all done.

Evan is out w/a knee injury, what like the last 2-3 weeks? You can tell from 4 weeks that he's not as good or as cheap as Clutts? You act like Clutts was an every down player and the sole reason the team ever protected Cutler; it's this weird fetish people get w/backup's on this team. Listen I really like Allen, and think he can be great, but if we could trade him for a strength somewhere else I'd be all for it; and that's about the area i put Clutts in.

I was sad to see Clutts go. But it's old history now. Time to move on and not look back.
Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

It more than just one play. He's been very effective as a "gunner" on punt coverage as well and is the second leading STeams tackler. Having lost Corey Graham that was a hole that needed filling.
And as for that one play, it resulted in a score that helped turn the game around and that's what made it a big time play. It wasn't just a simple punt block MM so stop trying to minimize the impact. Why are you trying to find a negative within a positive. Just for the hell of it? That's what's dumb if you ask me.
As far as I can tell Clutts hasn't scored an STeams TDs or directly caused any to be scored by Houston and he has one STeam tackle so far in 8 games. Clutts was a very good blocking back for us but Tice wouldn't use him so we traded and got a productive player for him.
That was my point. We had a good football player we couldn't use and as opposed to letting him just walk we made a trade and got a productive player or came up big for us and got us a score. It wasn't a comparison between the two players anymore than you could compare a punter with a corner back.
Jeez get with the program will ya'?
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Let me clarify a little bit.
I have nothing against McMannis, I think he is a pretty good special teams player to be honest. However, that punt block doesn't mean anything to me. The guy came unblocked to the kicker, sure he executed it well, but that's what you get paid for. He didn't beat anybody to make the play, he didn't do anything special. It was a race to see who could get there first because the defender blew his blocking assignment. I know you said you weren't able to watch the game, go watch that play and I think you'll agree with me after you see what I'm talking about. Countless game analysts agree with me on this point.
The title of the article is "McMannis trade looks good now" or something. To me it looks the same as it did before, which is not that great. Clutts added a lot more value to the team on offense/ST then McMannis does on ST alone. Thinking E. Rod could come in at 230 lbs and take up those blocking duties was pretty stupid, of course the kid is injured, he's blocking guys with 100 pounds on him. Stupid move by Tice.
We are about to see the impact Clutts has on the run game on a first hand basis tonight.

Trading a player that was seldom used for a ST "Gunner" was a good deal IMHO. If Tice was not using Clutts then he was just taking up a roster spot. Don't get me wrong, I liked Clutts but if the "OC" isn't going to play him .....................
