Personally, I have not seen any hysterics, so I would have to say no there is no over reaction.
As far as reactions -- all I can do is give my own. I am dissappointed because we played a very good team and we could have beat them with a better game plan. The OL played pretty well, but on one play where JC was flushed from the pocket, he gets hit and knocked out of the game. SO not sure whether to congratulate the line or blame them. I guess some of both is in order.
I'm not a OL guru so it takes me longer to go back and review. I haven't done that yet. How much help were we committing to the OL and how much did that hurt our offensive capability and flexability?
I am in the minority I think in that I did not think that Cutler played very well when he was in. I have no idea why he was tossing balls in the TO fest at the beginning of the game. We should have been running the ball. And Bush should have gotten the ball more.
We also had too many drops. The Texans are a good team and they made some good plays in the secondary, but as has been mentioned, there were many plays were the dbs were not there and we just whiffed. Even more maddening, we had players WIDE open in the second half and Cambell just did not see them, sometimes inexplicably checking down for losses.
Those are the things that make me mad. We had a real chance to beat a very good team and take best record in the NFL. We didn't because of:
1) bad game plan
2) inneffective TE's
3) QB not seeing open players
4) Not leaning more on a ball control running game in inclimate weather.
Cutler was not playing that well, Schaub was not much better. This was really a ball control running game. Not sure it takes a PhD in football to see that through the rain.
The one thing that was a pleasant surprise - I expected the Texans to be a good team and to be a handful. They were both. I actually expected that if we lost it would be due to WATTS dismembering JC because our line could not hold their D. That didn't happen and I'm not exactly sure why. I don't think our OL took a major step overnight, nor do I think that the Texans forgot how to apply extreme pressure overnight. I can't explain it, but happily we were able to hold back most of the pressure I expected.
I always said that if we gave Cutler time, he would win. That didn't happen. He had decent time but was not completing passes. Granted, it was horrible weather, but I felt that given time we would be ok. For the most part we had time, but we showed other weaknesses.
We did not use Bennett and Bush. Those are some pretty good weapons and Bush especially in that weather should have been worked to death. So while I know that we have a good team, I wonder if decisions like that will continue to cost us games. Not to say that it was all game plan -- Cambell and all our TE's were pathetic.
Marshall missed a sure TD, but I don't even count that because the Texans also had the same weather and they missed a few too. It's all of the above stuff THAT I FEEL WE HAD COMPLETE CONTROL of that bothers me. Bush fumbling in the rain and Marshall missing the TD were the same issues the Texans were having. I'm not crying about that stuff.
Anyway, that's my take on it. Hopefully, we learned something and can come up with something better for SF. However, if Cambell's vision of the field is what I saw yesterday, he needs to just keep handing the ball off to our RB's. He has no business throwing the ball. That was not a vereran QB -- he was playing like a scared rook. I thought he was better than that.
