The only way we don't go either offensive line in the first round of the draft is if it is determined that we will go with best player available and one comes along who is just a can't miss prospect. Teams like the Patriots, the Giants, the Ravens, and the Packers have done this for years and they're all almost always in the running for a championship. But if I'm basing my picks on positions of greatest need, I go with these following positions:
1) offensive guard, because I really think we will sign one of the big left tackles in free agency and am willing to gamble that Carimi will be better by this time next year.
2) wide receiver, because we are woefully thin at this position with quality players. If we can get one in the first two rounds and use him along with Marshall and Jeffery, I think we'll have it cinched.
3) tight end, because we have no adequate tight ends who can catch or block. Eifert at Notre Dame would be someone I would strongly consider drafting.
4) interior linebacker, because Urlacher is getting older and we need to groom someone to take his place. I'm thinking someone like C.J. Mosley, who is an interior lineman at Alabama, would be a good fit.

Dags, I may be wrong but I don't agree that we are woefully thin at WR. Marshall, Jeffrey and Bennett are a pretty good trio. Are we thin after that? Yes, but those three are pretty good even if only one is being used. I would characterize woefully thin as what we had prior to this year.

We really only have two solid wide receivers, houston, with those being Marshall and Jeffery. Earl Bennett stays injured more than he's available and therefore is not reliable to finish an entire season; he has never been healthy for an entire season. On top of that, Bennett is not that great of a route runner, and I point to the mistake he made against the Packers where he overran his route, resulting in an interception by Charles Woodson. We all know that Devin Hester is the most overrated receiver in the history of the franchise, and I don't think there's any doubt there. He was never meant to be an NFL caliber wide out. And then you have Dane Sanzenbacher, who can't hold onto the ball when he does catch it. We need a third solid wide receiver to be draft in the first two rounds in order to have the best starting trio of receivers we can possibly have.

Dags, obviously we are all just guessing right now as there are a thousand variables that will change a hundred times over between now and then. But what the hell, this is just a discussion board so...
I agree with the first bolded statement. Basically, there would have to be a damn good reason for Emery to NOT draft an OLman in the 1st round. We need a starter caliber player (like DeCastro would have definitely been for the Steelers if he didn't get hurt in the preseason).
I also agree with the 2nd bolded statement. We aren't going to get a 2013 starting LT except by BUYING one in FA. I do hope with all my heart that is possible and the potential LT FAs aren't all tagged or re-signed with their current teams. This is as big a FA necessity as a real WR was last year. Whatever needs to be done to free up the cap space required really just simply has to be done. It is that important. It can be done and it must be. I have no problem with Webb competing with Scott next TC for the swing position and that would still be darn good value out of Webb as a 7th rounder if he wins it. He would actually be a pretty reasonable backup OT. Fine by me.
I'm not giving up on Carimi and despite his struggles in several games this year it would be stupid to do so. He's in his his first full season coming off major surgery and he will still become a good RT in my jaded but still hopeful mind. Lots of talented players struggle early on (BU did too at first) and then get their sea legs under them after that.
It is realistic to think we could draft a damn good interior OL prospect late in the 1st. They don't tend to go nearly as high as OTs, QBs, RBs, and WRs. Ideally, get a guy who could play OG and maybe OC too. Garza is aging and will need replacement. Barrett Jones from what I know of him seems like a darn good prospect to consider. I just want (and we NEED) two new OL starters for next year. I'm fine with Carimi and Louis and we can finagle the 5th starting position with either Garza or JBrown or a vet rental if need be. I was really hoping Rachal would nail down the LG spot so we could focus on an OC but I guess not since he bolted.
The only other position I would even remotely consider in the 1st (excepting some "can't miss, can't pass up" player) is LB. But we could probably get a decent SLB in the 2nd and ride with Urlacher another year. He's nothing like his prime but he's not exactly a liability like the OL is either. I don't think a WR is a good idea with Marshall, Jeffery, and Bennett in the fold. A speed returner guy later on, sure...would love that since Hester is useless and Knox is probably done. Just not 1st round worthy IMO. Same thing with a TE. I know our current crop sucks but TEs are relatively inexpensive to buy in FA and you don't need a Gronk if you have good big WRs (which we DO) and an OL who gives your QB a chance to actually use them. OL is so much the bigger priority and need for us than is a marqui TE.

The reason why I think we need another WR sometime in the first two rounds is because we only have three really talented receivers in Marshall, Jeffery, and Bennett, and only one of those three (Marshall) has stayed healthy throughout the course of this season.
Barrett Jones is a good start for a OC/OG, but I would like to tell you of someone WalterFootball.com is projecting us to take in the first round this season. The name of this kid is Jonathan Cooper, a OG/OC out of the University of North Carolina. This guy would apparently be a reasonable pick for us if we were to decide that the offensive line is definitely the road we want to travel on in terms of who we draft in the first round.

I'm sure you know the college prospects better than I do since I don't watch many college games. I agree with the plan of signing a starting LT in FA and then drafting a starting interior guy in the first a la DeCastro last year. An OG/OC crossover type would be ideal. That would go a long long way in improving this dreadful OL. Let's face it, 80% of the problems prior to the SF game were coming from the left side and with Garza getting up there, figure the targets have to be LT-LG-OC in that order.
I'm kind of surprised that you see WR as a significant need. I don't. Amazingly, thanks to Emery using a similar formula last year (one established vet star + one high draft pick well chosen) I see us as having one of the most talented WR trios around. Yeah, there's been some hard luck injuries this year but no reason to "move on" from any of them IMO. I'd rather get a SLB guy in 2 and maybe a speedster WR/return man (a la what T.Y. Hilton is for the Colts) in the 4th since I doubt Knox will be back and Hester has proven beyond a doubt that he's not an offensive weapon.
Point is, OL has to be the #1 priority for improvement by far this offseason. Thanks to horrific OL play and bad OC playcalling/mismanagment (factors that are inter-related to some degree), our current WR trio has vastly under-performed its potential even with the injuries we have had. Fix that and Marshall would have had 1500 yards this season with Bennett & Jeffery adding 1000+ combined, not to mention the fact that we have 2 RBs who are quality pass receivers as well whose total yardage has been well below what it should have been. It is pretty damn hard to mount a real NFL pass attack, no matter how good your WRs are, when you need to keep 7-8 men in blocking every play and your QB is under constant siege.
JABF99 is right.... FIX THE OL FIRST

OL is first prio and when we need to draft/trade a new QB to Chicago we better make sure we got an Oline ready for him. You can have the best QB and the best WR on your offense but if you get sacked in less than 2 sec what those it help? Oline-->Everything else. That's how I look at it at this point because we got shine tools, RB, QB, WR you name it but we don't have an Oline so what can you expect? Ofcause going into the season I asked for more than what the Oline have given me so far, I really thought that Tice could fix this oline maybe not make it the best but certainly make it that good that we could use our new toys. I didn't expect us to be like the Saints/Packers/Pats I expected a medicore offense but what we have been given is a shit offense that shines when the D carries them and fails horrible when the D can't give us the lead(s).

So, you expected a mediocre offense but were given a shit offense? Isn't that one in the same right there, little buddy? lol. j/k. Remember to not commit malapropisms when writing in any language, whether that be Danish or English. Mediocre is a four dollar Webster's Dictionary term for "bad."
That being said, I agree with you 100% that this offensive line is shitty and this offense suffers from it because of that very reason. I believe that at the halfway point of the season, we have now given up 34 sacks, miraculously none of those coming at the hands of the Houston Texans but we did absorb six at the hands of San Francisco 49ers. I am so fucking glad that I didn't waste money and time to fly out to San Francisco to visit my cousin because we were going to go to that game. I was so sure we would win, and had Cutler played and had Alex Smith been in the game, I think the results might have at least been closer to being a competitive game for the Bears. Instead, the game turned into a coming out party (a frequently used term in the gay ole town of San Francisco) for Colin Kaepernick and a rebirth of the struggling San Francisco defense.
