Thanks for posting this. I was wondering.

We're 1 week from beginning our December schedule, and still re-shuffling players on the oline. Ideally you want a set group playing together for multiple seasons. At the very least you want the group set in August, before that first regular season game.

But what do you do? It is what it is.

On a positive note, I wonder if Emery is holding Lovie's feet to the fire here. Usually Lovie changes at glacier speed - slow as molasses.

Not here. Not now. He's actually lighting a fire under Tice (did you read Tice's comments on ESPN?). Tice was obviously repeating words that he had heard regarding his own performance. Things like

"But at the end of the day, we all have to have better results starting with me because I'm the coordinator. I have to have better results. The players have to have better results. It's a business. That's the way it is. That's what it's about."

If Emery is making Lovie accountable, that's a good thing. Lovie can be stubborn as a mule.

If a guy is sucking at his job you replace him in any endeavor. True the backups might not be any good but at least we can cycle through the bad and vett out some depth for the following season. Sometimes all guys need is a chance. I see time and time again where the backup is better than the starter and just needs the chance to show it. Probably not the case here but you've gotta put your foot down and say your moving on from here with or without these bums.

The whole castoffs, re-treads, bigger physical guys, standing pat in the draft, and simplifying the blocking scheme is a theory that if it DID work would be copied by the entire league! And when you see element after element of that line totally fail what do they do? They promote this guy to OC?

Then you hear the chorus of "well the OL needs continuity to succeed". Well bums are bums weather they have been together since pop warner or 10 years. So put in the replacement bums because the faster the ship sinks the quicker a new one can be had.

As your Reputation note reads, you just stated something that I've been preaching about Lovie Smith for the past two weeks. Lovie is a very stubborn person. I don't think this is a question of semantics in any way, shape, or form. Lovie puts a product on the field, fails to change with the given situation that might be hindering the success of the team, and as a result, the team flounders into a dimension of abject abomination, for lack of a better term or phrase to use for his description. Is Lovie a good coach? He's certainly coached some of the best Bears teams this franchise has had since the Ditka years, so he must be doing some things correctly, but on the other hand, I fear his inflexibility will lead to his ouster from being our head coach. The two things we've always been able to count on being superlative about our team during the Lovie Smith era have been a great defense and an even better special teams unit. So far, we haven't seen the Bears hand the rigors that go along with being a great team. The offense this season has struggled mightily even in games against some of the league's weakest defenses, with the offense only putting up more than 20 points in a game during the Colts, Cowboys, Jaguars, and Titans contests. The rest of the points that you see the team having scored have come on defense. It's no coincidence that the reason for any inflated offensive numbers that we've been able to put up throughout the course of the Lovie Smith is because since his arrival in Chicago in 2004, the Bears have scored 20% of their touchdowns on either special teams or defense. I think I read that the league average is somewhere closer to 9%. So while it's good that the defense carries so much of the weight for this team in terms of points generated, it's disheartening to realize that Lovie places such a premium on his defense and special teams units that we fail to realize that this team's main outlet for scoring points, namely the offense, is slacking off due to inattention to details. This has to change next year because it's already too late to do anything about making this offense run like a well-oiled machine this season.

I wouldn't say taking 10 weeks before making any changes to this piss poor O line, is in anyway moving fast. That being said your comment about Lovie moving as slow molasses is correct.

The thing that makes me sick, is the fact that this goes beyond 10 weeks.

In 2010 our oline ended up ranked #31 in the NFL. In 2011 it was ranked dead last at #32. As of this week, our 2012 oline is ranked dead last at #32. And who has been the coach of the oline? Mike Tice (even though he's our OC this year, he's still the guy who ultimately coaches these guys on the oline).

It's not like this is a new problem. It's killed us. Can you imagine what this present Chicago Bears team would be if we had a stud oline? It would be one powerful team.

The Bears have had YEARS to fix the OL. Years.

I'm not saying fire Tice, but something is horribly wrong when you can't fix a major team problem in 3 years.

The one silver lining I see is that, at least, we have Tice's "Hester Package" to look forward to. Once he rolls out that baby, we're set for a serious Super Bowl run.

"The Hester Package" will be bigger than when we rolled out the "T Formation" under George Halas. I love singing "Bear Down" when it come to the "T Formation" part. In future years they'll add "The Hester Package" to that "Bear Down" song. We'll shock the nation for sure.

In fact, I think Cutler, in this picture, is saying "At least Tice has 'The Hester Package' to roll out soon"

First official post on this forum and thread after many weeks of reading through all the comments during the current season. I tend to agree with the main themes that Lovie's primary focus has been on D and ST. This has now come full circle after many years of ignoring the offense and what we clearly see is a clear sense of desperation at Halas Hall. I would like to think on the business side of thing Emery has been quiet through the season but is now applying some serious pressure to Lovie to fix and salvage what he can for this season. I do think based on the current talent level that the Bears if they get into the playoffs they will be one and done. Lovie is (As noted a hundred times) a notoriously stubborn coach who will not make necessary changes both on game day and as the season progresses. To be quite honest the NFL has clearly passed him by in terms of the type of offense needed now to be competitive and succeed on a weekly basis. He clearly will never grasp the balance that has to exist with both sides of the ball. Hopefully this is the wake call this team needs.
I also wanted to chime in with regards to to the current NFL CBA and I remember reading somewhere that each team will be allocated extra cap space (Can't find the link or the exact amount or purpose) to either use in 2012 or 2013. This is in addition to the roll over of un used CAP. Why do I bring this up? Because there is some debate as to how much we can use to try and sign a premier LT in free agency. If we have an xtra 4-5 million it will go a long way to the cap hit that the top FA LT's will require to fix this mess. I hope to chime in more often because I really enjoy this forum.
