I think Lovie Smith is certainly no worse than Jeff Fisher was with the Titans. That being said, I don't believe we will need to change head coaches at the end of the season unless for some reason we totally peter out and lose enough games to keep us from getting into the playoffs. It could easily happen because we have four upcoming games against teams who currently have winning records (Minnesota twice, Green Bay at home, Seattle at home I think). Of the two teams we play with losing records, those being Detroit and Arizona, both teams could be matchup nightmares, especially the Lions, who sacked Cutler five times on Monday Night Football back last month.

I don't know about Marinelli and Toub those have always been the genious on this team imo.

Honestly, as long as the offense gets some rhythm going and doesn't get bounced out of the first round of the playoffs, i would keep Tice, too. I think he deserves some slack for this o-line debacle and having to figure things out as a first time coordinator, BUT there is more than enough talent at the skill positions to dismiss him were the Bears to start playing like they did against the Texans (i don't for a second believe anyone else will do what the 49ers did, whih is why i don't count that game), because even with the bad play, they had enough trips within fg range to win the game on a series of 3's...

Well, all I have to say is that if we're serious about promoting a head coach from within the Lovie-buddy system, it should definitely not be the man who posted just the second winless season in NFL history. No, if anyone should be promoted to head coach from within, it should be Dave Toub. He always has among the best special teams units in the league, and as such, the special teams unit is the one area of this team that is better on a consistent basis usually than the defense.
On the subject of potential head coaches on the horizon to hire, the coaches that I would want to replace Lovie should it come to that are either Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden. Of those two, we know that Cowher has a track record of producing consistent winners over a long period of time. That being said, it would require switching defenses from the 4-3 Cover 2 schematic to a 3-4 Zone Blitz schematic. Do we have the tools to successfully go about switching to this style of defense? Yes. We have two of the best linebackers in the game in Urlacher and Briggs, and then you have Shea McClellin who would be transformed into a LOLB. Cowher's offenses are predicated heavily on the run but also include a strong passing game to balance out the effectiveness of his coordinator's offense. As a coach, Cowher is perhaps the biggest throwback example to the old school method of coaching as was handled by Halas and Ditka. It would seem to me, then, that this would be a win-win for both sides.
The other coach is Jon Gruden, and he is big on the modern passing game. He utilized the Tampa 2 defense that has been so prevalent in Chicago for the past nine seasons while coaching the Buccaneers, so I don't think that much would change defensively. He is good at developing quarterbacks, and I think that he would be good for Jay Cutler should he ever become the Bears head coach of the future. He would certainly modernize the way the Bears acted and felt, that's for sure.

Hard to start over// a coach doesn't play//years of lack of talent isn't turned around in one year//i would have signed jeff fischer for a change//lovie knows defense but you need both to win

Dags, forget Cower. He will come without being given full power

And how do you know that? While it is true that Bill Parcells held front office jobs as the head coach of the Patriots and Jets, he sure as hell didn't play the part of Executive VP/GM for the Dallas Cowboys because that was Jerry Jones calling the shots. I have to believe that Cowher is less egotistical than "Tuna" was. And seriously, what head coach out there holds all the cards in dealing with player personnel and the like? Mike Shanahan is the closest I think to being a coach like that, but even he isn't a GM. I don't necessarily agree with that assertion you made, but I definitely won't rule out the possibility that it could be true.

There have been reports of such for years Dags. They had to have come from somewhere.

Maybe so and maybe not. Do you honestly believe every word that is printed or is blared out over the airwaves of America and the rest of the world?
