My best case scenerio Would be as follows (knowing , of course, that each is a long shot)
Sean Payton as Head Coach.
In today's NFL, Offense rules even though I still believe in the "Defense wins Championships" philosophy. However, a strong and dynamic offense can be the best friend of a good and aging Defense. If we could get this Offense turned around quickly (a tall order to be sure), that would open the window for this Defense to last a little longer.
Ron Rivera as DC.
I like Marinelli just fine and if he would stay without Lovie, then I'm good with that, but I'm guessing he wont. With that said, I like Chico a lot and he hasn't really been given a great chance in Carolina. Bring him home to Chicago and give him the DC and Asst. HC title.
Norv Turner as OC.
I know he's Ron Turners brother, but they are not the same and I believe Norv is like many coaches, much better at the "Coordinator" level than at the "HC" level. I am also good with keeping Bates, but if everything changes, that likely will as well.
With all this said, the HC obviously has the authority to hire his Coordinators, so there is virtually no chance this would all fall like this, but that would be my dream staff.

I think the only coach as far as HC, DC, ST and OC that Emery will let go at the end of this season is the OC Tice, the rest will all be here next year. And Tices replacement will be someone Emery wants and Lovie will have nothing to do with the pick or how he runs the Offense in 2013, and if Lovie can't live with that then he will be replaced.
This week is Lovie's last chance to "beat a good team". He will fail yet again and be totally out coached yet again. I believe that the moment the game clock hits "0:00" and the score is 27-13 Packers, Lovie's fate is sealed. It won't be made official under the season is over, but the letter of dismissal will be all typed up and saved on Emery's computer. Just hit PRINT.
JJ, you've been around this board (and the other) long enough to know how I feel about our Coaching, so I won't go into that; however, I for one would be patient enough to see if things could be turned around one more year. The question I have for you is this; do you think the Bears would keep Lovie on as a lame duck for only one season? That seems to be unheard of in todays NFL, but there is nothing against the rules saying it can't be done. I assume if that were the case, no new OC would come in, so if Tice is let go it would almost have to go to Bates. I'm good with giving Lovie and crew one more year, but if they give him an extension I will drink myself to death.
This, right here, is exactly what needs to take place IF Lovie and the rest are retained. There absolutely has to be a change in how this team is coached in the offseason, the preseason and the regular season.
Every year I see the defensive players showing up in shape, with their heads in the game and ready to go out and play winning football. And they do until either fatigue from playing too many snaps, injuries, or just plain old Lovie getting out coached again does them in.
Every year I see just the opposite from the offense. I hear a lot of talk and hyperbole in the offseason and preseason and then nothing but poor game plans, lousy play calling, and confused players who can't or don't execute properly. I see an offense with zero confidence in themselves playing at 3/4 speed and getting stuffed more often than they succeed.
We've had many different players go through that offense over the years and we're now on the fourth OC we've had during the nine years Lovie has coached here. Nothing changes. It really sad when you look back and can say that the best offensive efforts we've had came under Ron Turner, with Rex Grossman at QB, and with skill players that aren't even close to being a match for the guys we had this year.
During the past three seasons neither Martz or Tice have managed to produce consistent results no matter how many players they were given to build from. If anything this most recent version of the offense has gotten worse not better as the season has progressed.
Lovie may keep his job but I will not stop laying the blame for not making a change in that offense two weeks ago by replacing Tice with Bates as the play caller. Two more games have been lost because the offense couldn't score enough points to remain competitive. I don't give a good God Damn what excuses Lovie and Tice care to use either. The job didn't get done.
It was up to Lovie to make that change while the season could still be salvaged and he didn't do it. To me that's just one more reason he's given me to think that he's not up to making the hard decisions that need to be made in order to build and maintain a championship team. So now it's time for Phil Emery to take charge of that offense. He did more to improve it personnel wise in one year than JA did in ten or Lovie has in nine.
If we expect to win with Lovie Smith as HC then this team needs a top OC who can work with Phil Emery to get the players he needs and can work under a mandate that says Lovie Smith has no say whatsoever in the teams offense. If Lovie can't live with that than JJ is right. He gets the boot.
I don't think that can happen Soul. Maybe someone with a better memory than me can chime in. I thought I remember that Lovie's contract included control of his coaches. In other words, Emery controls players, but Lovie controls coaches. So if Emery keeps Lovie, he has no say on his coaches. Of course in real life, Lovie would do well by agreeing to whatever "suggestion" Emery might have since Lovie's hand is not very strong right now.
