Thread: If Tice fails in this stint with the Bears, is his NFL career done?

I've said before Tice is in a no-lose situation. If he succeeds he wouldn't stick around. He was being courted previously for other positions. If he fails he can say he wasn't given the talent to succeed. Might explain some of the goofy moves we've seen w/the o-line.

I can't imagine anyone wanting anything to do with Tice after his stint with the Bears. Whether or not Lovie stays on as head coach is one thing, but I honestly can't see Tice being allowed to come back as offensive coordinator or even as team jockstrap holder.

I disagree. I think Lovie will be forced to get rid of Tice by Emery at season's end. We definitely won't see a game this year where Tice doesn't call plays, but I do believe he's finished after this season. I can't imagine Emery allowing one abject failure after another to keep happening when it is easily diagnosed and treated.

I am hoping Emery is this kind of GM. Lovie is loyal to a fault with his coaches. He needs a smart, strong GM, to keep him accountable.

Yes, I see the same. If Emery insists he let Tice go, Lovie might walk. Which would be ok with me.

I know Tice is not a good OC and I think the rest of the league sees that too. I am strongly suspecting that he may not be a very good OL coach either. I wonder what that was built on. Was he able to coach up a line or was he luckily in charge of a talented line that he got credit for? I just don't see him doing much. I am going to give him some credit with Webb as I do see him getting better, but right now he just "sucks less". His decisions are downright stupid. the movements he had made on the line. Benching of Rachal when the fail was at tackle. Keeping Webb in when Rachal and Carimi were pulled. If you are going to pull the people that were at fault, you pull them all or no one. He doesn't know what he is doing.

Carimi has me genuinely worried. I have never seen a T play that badly and I know he is pretty much in his first year, but that was not in his first game and supposedly Tice is a guru, so that was just tough to get your mind around. Some really difficult decisions need to be made at both a player and coaching level.

For my money, both Lovie and Tice can find new work. I'd have to understand what happened with Marinelli on the 49ers meltdown, but in general he has been able to show progression of the D, so he has the benefit of the doubt as long as I could understand why that happened. Toub is a good coach and I would keep him.

The problem is the better coaches (like Toub) are talking Lovie into getting people when it is Lovies job to prioritize. Yes a shiny new gunner would be great, but look at the OL. Lovie seems to give in to the squeekiest wheel. Tice says he can make his guys work, so that seems to be fine with Lovie. I know it is not a popular point of view, but IMO, Lovie is a big part of the coaching dysfunction.

I'm fine with the coaches on defense and special teams. Over the years, these units have been respectable. Lovie Smith has strengths and weaknesses. I'd be fine keeping Lovie if we could bring in a guy for OC who is competent.

Emery may have the juice now to tell Lovie what to do regarding the OC debacle. And if Lovie walks, then Emery will find plenty of coaches who would kill to be head coach of the Chicago Bears. Lovie knows this. He's not as protected as he once was. He's replaceable. And frankly, Lovie also knows the offense has been his Achilles heel. Lovie knows defense. He doesn't know offense. Ron Turner, Martz & Tice have been mistakes. Time to let Emery help solve the OC problem, with Lovie's input. I'm not saying they'll mandate a OC without Lovie's input. I believe they can come to a consensus on that. What Emery won't do, is sit by and lose his job like Jerry Angelo, because he didn't reign Lovie Smith in.

Emery (I hope) has the power to make needed changes, and that includes firing Lovie Smith if he continues to be stupid about the offense. Also, now that we have some weapons on offense, and Emery here to continue to upgrade it (the OL in 2013) then I believe this would be a place an offensive coordinator could make a name for himself. You have great "D" and Special Teams too.

We can do better than Mike Tice.
