LT is one of the most difficult positions to fill and play well at. We all know Webb's consistency struggles--looks good for a game or two, then has a terrible game or two. There have been a lot of screams ("Bench Webb!") that are understandable in frustration but not rooted in reality. Simply put, like it or not, Webb is the LT this year at least and he's not going to be benched as long as he's physically healthy (not getting injured is one of his few consistent credits). There literally is no one else on the roster to play LT except in emergency stopgap fashion. Carimi is pretty much a pure RT and he's struggled there too. Scott is also RT >> LT. And don't even try to suggest that playing an udfa rookie (Brown) at LT is an option. It isn't. It's Webb's job w/o competition the remainder of this year to show what he can do now in his 3rd season. This offseason a decision will have to be made on whether to stick with him or not (again assuming an upgrade is available and affordable in FA cuz it won't come from the draft). Every time we see Webb put in a solid performance against quality competition like he did this week vs. JAllen, we all hope he's "turning the corner". In the past those hopes have been quickly dashed. Here's hoping again over the next 5 weeks...

Sure the Bears can get their own Matt Kalil. All they have to do is finish low enough to get a top five or a top ten pick. All in favor of that raise you hands.
Jimbo Covert was a top ten pick (6th overall in 1983) and that's where you find good LTs. There are even fewer of them today than there were back when we took Covert so chances are we're not gonna get one in the draft unless we get incredibly lucky.
The only immediate solution is to find one in FA and I don't completely agree with the article that Clady or Long aren't possibilities. No one thought we could get a guy like Pep either but we did. I actually think Long is a very good possibility given the state of affairs in Miami. But it will also take a wheelbarrow full on $$$ to get him and only a slightly smaller wheelbarrow to get any of the others.
If you can't draft and develop your own buying someone else's is the only option.

Only an idiot would draft a LT in the seventh round and then start him after the LT you drafted before turned out to be a dud.
Any competent fucking MORON in charge of the darft would have seen the mistake ... DAY FUCKING ONE !
And drafted again accordingly.
Lets remember that Carimi played LT in college ... so thats THREE LEFT TACKLES drafted.
And the results are ... WHAT ?
One motherfucker (FIRST ROUND) is OFF the team.
Another motherfucker (seventh round) can barely keep his job.
ANOTHER motherfucker (FIRST ROUND) is showing all the talents of a RIGHT GUARD.
JCUT pays the price.
CAN WE HIRE A SCOUT THAT KNOWS LEFT TACKLES ? Please?
This shit is getting like ... REALLY fucking old.
Krony whats out there in the future?

And that would be Tice.

Tice's record as an O-Line coach is pretty darn good. There is only so much that a coach can do though. Tice may have hooted and hollered up and down Halas Hall but the folks in charge CHOSE to draft other positions. We'll never know the truth of the matter but we DO KNOW that the Bears haven't historically drafted up front. What we can see though is Tice's record as an O-Line coach and it is more than respectable. His record as a head coach or OC are not the greatest. Just because the Bears' O-Line is faltering doesn't make it Tice's fault entirely. I don't think that it is a coincidence that Webb's regression is taking place after Tice was promoted to OC.
And that's a fact. The line played better ball with less talent the end of last year than it has so far this one. Tice can coach blockers. He was a very good one himself. But he's no OC. He got that job by default when we couldn't get others we wanted more.
The mistake is in not making a change in his duties and relieving him of the play calling and the majority of the game planning in favor of Bates who has far more experience with that than Tice does and putting Tice to work getting the problems with the line straightened out.
Lance Louis is an example of a guy who was a low round draft pick who was coached up well enough to become a very good starter and in most cases Webb wouldn't even have made it this far so he's been able to squeeze at least something out of that lazy oaf.
As far as the others are concerned I'm beginning to see why their teams released them. They just aren't motivated to play at a high level. They were high draft picks who have all been serious underachievers as pros and if Carimi doesn't turn his game around then he'll end up in that pile too.
CWill got bumped around all over hell's creation but he played well enough at LG to at least not have been jerked out of there to compete with Webb. That's the one thing that started this whole clusterfuck rolling. On this team Tice should still be the OLine coach and Jeremy Bates the OC.

Exactly. People want to believe that somebody we pull out of another team's dumpster garbage, is going to miraculously be good for us. Every once in a while, a miracle does happen and the garbage player can be worth a roster spot.
But there IS a reason why these players were thrown away as busts - they stunk.
Same with old players who are way past their prime. Fans think that just because the player was once a "big name" and had success when they were younger - that the Bears will miraculously transform them into their once-great selves. It's the Orlando Pace thing. These players just embarrass themselves when they hang on too long in the NFL. Tired old has-been players. Yet fans think they're great to pick up for the Bears. It's delusional thinking.

Yep!!! This is so incredibly obvious to virtual all knowledgeable fans...really makes you wonder how it can't be known to Lovie and especially Emery. It is so frustrating to watch. I certainly hope our new GM asserts his authority this offseason with regard to both coaching and drafting for this OL and offense in general. It's pathetic to be LAST in the league in passing O when you have the talent we do at skill positions.

If we hire a new OC, I hope it's not Bates. He's had minimal NFL experience (he was OC 1 year at Seattle and was promptly fired).
We can do MUCH better than Bates at OC. Let's not get so eager to dump Tice, that we just hire any clown to be our OC. Frankly, I'm weary of failed OC's on the Bears. Let's do our homework this time. With the changes on the Bears, especially with Emery, I believe we can attract a solid OC here. A solid coach could build something special here.
