I think it is perfect where we are. Jeffrey isn't going to continue to be hurt (I don't think). IDK...
I'm talking about "nice to have" and not "we gotta have" here. So, it will probably not happen. Or maybe we have a youngster like Joe on the PS who could develop into something special for the depth chart WR next season.
I think Bennett is a very decent #3, possession type receiver (night and day better than Hester). But when (not if, but when) we lose one of our top 2 WR's (B.Marsh or Alshon), then I think we'd be in better shape if we had another above average WR on the roster. I don't consider Hester good enough to be on the offense depth chart.
I'd much rather see us worry about fixing the OL, and we DO desperately need a solid receiving TE. So don't think I'm pushing hard for another WR here
. Just day dreaming about a "nice to have" upgrade at WR.

I agree with replacing Hester with another WR of Bennett's quality or even better if we could afford it. I see what you mean

i think what we're missing is a true deep threat, someone who can stretch the field...that doesn't even need to be a starter necessarily, but someone who forces defenses to defend the deep halves of the field...
marshall, jeffery and bennett are all short to intermediate receivers...

JABF, I don't think any team could handle losing both their 1 and 2 wr's. I just don't see that as so far down the list that it's of no importance; it's a luxury, it's where in the 6th/7th/UDFA route.
I think you hold Hester to an unusally high standard for a #4 wr. The below are #3/#4 wr's w/similar catches as Hester:
| Player | Team | Rec | Yds | Avg | Yds/G | Lng | TD | 20+ | 40+ | 1st | 1st% | FUM | targets |
| Doug Baldwin | SEA | 20 | 257 | 13 | 25.7 | 50 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 11 | 55 | 0 | 34 |
| Devin Hester | CHI | 18 | 203 | 11 | 18.5 | 39 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 6 | 33.3 | 0 | 31 |
| Austin Pettis | STL | 16 | 144 | 9 | 14.4 | 36 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 8 | 50 | 0 | 30 |
These guys are only getting a handfull of looks each game, they are not who are winning/losing games. Hester is basically right between the 2 in everything. He's got decent yards, decent average, he's made more big plays, but not as many 1st downs.
I'm not saying he's great, far from it, but he's a solid #4th option ecspeically when you add into it his KR/PR duties.

All good points. And I definitely agree it's a luxury. I'm not talking about losing both of our top 2 receivers, but rather a 4th WR option better than Hester. I'd rather see us invest into a kid with some upside than having Hester at WR. I know that sounds overly harsh regarding Hester, but it's how I feel about it. Let Hester concentrate on getting better on ST's.
I was just "what if'ing" today and wish we had a better option than Hester. That's all. I'd much rather see us take care of critically important needs, like the OL, looking for Urlacher's eventual replacement, a rock solid receiving TE, etc.

Hester is just kind of how this team is. You can do worse, but you can do better. he's an average #4 wr, Bennett is an average #3. Lovie is a slightly above average coach, Cutler is a really good 2nd tier qb.

I never thought about it that way Ric, but you're right. That is a good way of putting it. We'd all like to have a better team, but at the same time, we realize we could do worse.
BTW, you guys all know me well enough by now to not put too much stock into what I post here....I'm just a mediocre poster for a mediocre team. They should have replaced me with a decent FA poster, when the CBMB was turned off earlier this year.

Honestly,I think good recieving/possession tight end would do wonders for this team.
Davis and Spaeth inspire fear in no one, they aren't the threat so many TE's are in this league.
Welker,Witten,Vernon Davis;you have to account for,the Bears TE's you really don't.

Wasn't the deep threat supposed to be Hester with his speed? Knox is out and I thought that Hest was the only guy with the speed to fill that function. He doesn't catch as well, but he is the fastest we have.

Hester is a threat w/his speed; if he could catch that type of pass, but he's not really good w/the over the shoulder/adjustment stuff so he's not a worry there. He's a good 10-15 yard guy though that will get a ton of yac
