I blame Jerry Angelo for most of our woes. I blame Lovie Smith for some too. But mostly I blame Jerry.

Omiyale started for the Seahawks and seemed to do better there than he did here. It's not all the players 99, and even if it was -- the coaches pick 'em and decide who they keep and who they let go. That is not to say we have top shelf talent. We don't.

Frank Omiyale. The veteran offensive lineman played the past three seasons with the Bears, starting 31 games at left guard, left tackle and right tackle. With the injury problems the Bears are having on their line, there’s a pretty good chance he’d be starting this week against the Seahawks.
Except that Omiyale signed with the Seahawks in free agency in March.
“It’s not a big deal, but I’m excited to see some of the guys,” he said today of returning to Soldier Field as a member of the visiting team. “Other than that, we’re trying to win a game. So that’s what this week is all about.”
The Bears already have won eight games and lead the NFC North. But the line that will start against the Seahawks on Sunday vaguely resembles the unit that helped the Bears win seven of their first eight games.
Gabe Carimi, who had been benched for his play at right tackle, will start at right guard because Lance Louis was lost for the remainder of the season with a knee injury in last week’s game against the Vikings. Former Seahawks first-round draft choice Chris Spencer started at left guard against the Vikings for Chilo Rachal, but today Spencer was ruled out for Sunday because of a knee injury he got against the Vikings. So the line which lines up against the Seahawks could include – from left tackle to right – J’Marcus Webb, Edwin Williams, Roberto Garza, Carimi and Jonathan Scott.
“I ain’t got nothing to do with that,” Omiyale said with a laugh.
In the Seahawks’ 6-5 start, Omiyale has started one game at left tackle and played briefly at left and right tackle in two other games. But most of his action has come on special teams, and he had a key block on Leon Washington’s 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that gave the Seahawks a fourth-quarter lead in last week’s loss to the Dolphins.
“It’s been good for me to come here,” he said. “I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here. It’s a great bunch of guys; hard workers. Great coaches. So, yeah, it’s been a good situation.”

He's a backup there.

This is what I'm talking about. Jerry Angelo seemed (to me) to bring in too many Omiyale-level players and acted like he'd gifted us with good talent. Even his 1st round picks were often busts, or mediocre talent (with some notable exceptions).

Too much of our talent was mediocre, and I do blame Jerry Angelo for that. You can blame Lovie for a lot of things, and I'll buy into that, but not the talent acquisition problems. That's on the GM.

Yes, he's a backup but he started the game against the Bears I thought.

I don't know if Angelo thought he was bringing in people with talent and then relying on the coaches to develop them or he just whiffed on them. Probably both of them.

I have never been in an NFL draft room, but I would find it to be a huge surprise if the GM picks the new players in a vacuum. I just don't believe it. There must be a discussion of the people that the are needed and then they are bounced off each other. I think it is a rare occurance that a coach tells a GM he doesn't want someone and the GM does it anyway. And when a coach says he really wants someone, he may not get him, but I bet it weighs pretty heavily.

Just my thoughts, but when you bring in players, you want to be sure that the guy that is going to be in charge of them has agreed to using them. Otherwise we are even more dysfunctional than I thought.

Draft day is just a culmination of a year's work by an entire department. The personnel department of a successful NFL team is a complex animal. It's is a foundation to a team's success, and operated year round full-throttle. The coach is not a part of this unit. The coach definitely has input as far as perceived needs. But his job is to coach, while this other component is working in high gear nationwide all year long. The GM is the top-level manager who makes personnel decisions and the scouts work for him, but obviously, not for any of the coaches. It's not dysfunction, but how it has to work at the NFL level - these are billion-dollar businesses, and they ARE fairly diversified and specialized.

As far as personnel decisions go, the buck stops with the GM. Maybe in the case of a dysfunctional team like the Cowboys, it stops with Jerry Jones, the owner. But that's the exception, not the rule.

The GM is responsible for the coaches too. Emery made a 1 year commitment to keep Lovie, but was given full power to fire anyone after that year. Emery has full power and authority, but it is a double-edged sword because, Emery has full responsibility to put a quality product on the field - both coaches and player personnel.

Lovie is guilty of a lot of stuff, but he's not the guy who makes personnel acquisition decisions. Sure, he has input like any head coach has. But to be fair, Lovie isn't responsible for Jerry Angelo's draft and FA woes. We might as well blame Lovie for parking problems at games if we're going to begin blaming him for other's failures.

This is all I was saying

OK Any new contract/ coach in the future has to have his last year on their contract NON-guarenteed. They do well , get extension, no problem. They need to go, cut , no money lost. Win WIN !

That would make the second to last year the win or go home year. Good thought, but would not make things easier

I blame Jerry Angelo.

I like Jay Gruden as the next head coach. He's from the midwest and has a great offensive mind, which is a necessity now in the NFL.

Phil Emery and the new McKaskey will want their own choice as HC. Lovie's had plenty of time to prove himself. He fired Rivera which proved how bad he is as a leader. Bring back Rivera as DC!
