Rumor has it that Goodell has found a hi-tech helmet that will help eliminate concussions from happening:

This is EXCELLENT. The next time the Bears get buried by the 9ers, they can keep breathing and we won't have to stop the game.

Part of the problem w/new/better helmets is the players have to agree to use them, and they have been reluctant to do so.

I disagree only because the onside kick would be eliminated. That throws out a lot of strategy

but it's replaced w/a 4th and 15. AND if you lined up in a punt formation, you could fake the punt. I bet the chances of getting an onside kick, and making a 4th and 15 are not that much different.

But like I said, I would have it at the 40, not the 30; the field position is WAY to risky at your own 30.

Oh they're working on that one. It's called risk aversion to micro-trauma.Within 10 years the game will be far closer to flag football than football as we know it.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

SFB, w/in 10 years the game might be extinct; and it will have little to do w/the NFL. There was an article written this offseason describing the process, and it started at the High school level. Quick break down:

H.S's, their coaches and the referee's, scared of lawsuits stop refereeing, coaching and having the program all together, CA/NY's/FL HS districts also worried about lawsuits, or after being sued, shut down all programs. This shuts down many of the feeder progams for the college level; and many of the small programs shut down for lack of players, and also worry's of lawsuits. Many states follow this, and it becomes at a H.S./college level a mostly regional sport(middle/southern states). This drops the feeder programs of the NFL even further and it collapses in on itself.

The kids instead play basketball, baseball, soccer etc etc. The article talks about how no one thought boxing/horse racing would ever become minor sports(which they have) or that MLB would ever not be king(which it no longer is).

None of this even goes into the fact that more and more parents are going to be relucant to have their kids play b/c of the head injuries which further reduces pool of players also. IMO the NFL, cannot exist as it is currently b/c of the danger involved, both to the players(physically) and the schools/teams(legally) that support them.

More and more parents in our area do not want their kids playing football. This area has always been football crazy going back generations. Kids would begin playing organized football when they were 8 years old or so. They still do, but I can see the writing on the wall. Parents are increasingly hesitant to let their kids play, after seeing the dangers involved, and potential long term health problems.

I believe the game will evolve at all levels to be more safe. I don't believe it will ruin the game. We'll all bellyache and complain with each new safety improvement, but the game will still be a great one IMHO. People don't embrace change very well. But it's part of life.
    Go Bears!

JABF, but it's going to have to start at the pro leve(most visable) the money has to be poored into safety inovations, rules changes, and better instructions on how to keep the game safe; and it has to move down to College and then HS and so on.

People that hate Goodell for "ruining the game" aren't looking at the fact that his hand is being forced; and that the enviornment around the NFL is quickly changing.

Parents(who were always concerned about the sport(b/c of broken bones) are now even more concerned about brain injuries. My kid won't(unless he really wants to, but I won't encourage him), and he's a big kid and is expected to be 6'7/270+. But if he wants to play a sport I'll push him into basketball/soccor or golf before i'll let him play football. he's to bright of a kid for me to want to risk his mind.

If the players lawsuit is successfull(and I think it will be), I dont see any reason why lawyers won't target college/H.S.'s for a free/easy payday(neither are near as well funded as the NFL). The players(and btw I think the NFL/players associtiation should have/could have thrown these guys a bone and funded a retirement plan for them to live decent) w/out knowing it are going to risk killing the sport.

I gotta think you would lose that bet...the chances of recovering an onside kick, especially when the other team expects it (key factor) has to be pretty low(1 out 10?)....4th and 15 (which isn't really any different than 3rd and 15) has to be a lot easier to convert (1/3?), especially for team with highly efficient pass attacks...I'd take a Cutler to Marshall jump ball over an onside kick attempt any day...

Reductio ad absurdum...it's how we roll...
