See how sick in the head we've become? We have to "settle" with Bates because he's better than nothing (Tice). We're saying "what have we to lose?" ....things couldn't get worse.
Well first of all, things CAN get worse. We're the Bears.
Second of all, aren't you guys getting tired of "settling" for mediocre coaches and talent? I am. Instead of getting something better than the worst, why not try for the best? I know that's radical thinking for the Bears or Cubs, but why not strive for excellence = the BEST.
We may have the perfect storm here. We have a new CEO, George McCaskey, who seems to be an upgrade over the bimbo's we've had before. He seems to truly want to deliver a Super Bowl win for the sake of his mom, before she dies. I think there's a new attitude right now from his end. We seem to have a GM now who may be excellent. I think George will this Emery guy do what ever it takes to get it done in Chicago.
If it's just going to be like the past, then there is no hope. We'll continue to be a mediocre, or worse franchise forever.

There is one other motivator here for the McCaskeys. I've read, and you guys have probably read too, that once Virginia dies, the inheritance tax will make it almost impossible for the McCaskeys to retain their ownership of the franchise. They will be forced to sell the majority share of the club.
Virginia is extremely old and probably won't be around that much longer. It makes financial sense to have a winning franchise to put on the market, vs a franchise with problems. So not only is there an incentive to win another Super Bowl while Virginia is alive to enjoy it - there's also a financial incentive to have a winning franchise to put on the market.
And actually, I've heard that Lovie is a very well paid coach. I have no idea if that's truly the case, but if memory serves me right, I have read that. I don't see money as an obstacle to dumping Lovie and hiring a new HC if the season continues to tank - and hiring a stud HC that may cost top dollar to replace Lovie.

The settle for Bates part?Lovie gets an extra/ final year. Who else is going to take the job? Tice keeps OC? As to the seconod qoute I AGREE, or wish that was the case, You never know about the rest of the family. Do they want to get every last penny out of it before its over?

I don't want Lovie to get a 2nd year anymore; talent level or not, he cannot beat the elite teams, or even coach the elite coaches to a stalemate(forget outcoaching). He doesn't deserve a final year, he deserves to have been kicked to the curb w/Angelo, but he was retained at the behest of Virginia.
Hopefully Emery sees the fact that Lovie cannot beat the teams the Bears need to beat and will finally give him the walking papers he so deserved last year; and w/that the rest of his staff.

I agree with you, Ric, and I think the above will become all the more clear after this weekend. When Lovie & Tice will once again be schooled by McCarthy & Capers, resulting in yet another failure to "beat the Packers" as he promised and in fact another failure to defeat a single playoff caliber team since opening day this year.
My worry is that ownership may get shortsighted because of money and be tempted to keep Lovie on for a lame duck "last chance" year to avoid having to eat his remaining salary. Hope I'm wrong as I see that as a huge mistake that Emery needs to put the kibosh on.
If you see that "things need to change" (and how could you deny that after 2 consecutive playoff-derailing meltdowns?), then MAKE CHANGES. Real changes. Not half-ass, tinker-around-the-edges, window dressing bullshit changes. That means sweeping out the dead weight for new blood in both the coaching staff (Lovie, Tice, multiple failed positional coaches) AND the player roster (Davis, Hester, OL goofs). Make sweeping, broad changes.

Yes, I normally pick the Bears to win, but I don't see us beating the Packers this weekend.
And I also agree with the player dead weight we have. It is not only dead weight, but dead weight that we have had to already see was dead weight previously (Hester, Davis, Webb, etc.). When that happens, it is the coaches. Plain and simple. Yeah, Lovie will be taken to school agin this weekend, but he usually sleeps through class...
