I do think we are going to lose to Green Bay and lose badly (27-10?) and that should be Lovie's deathknell. His last chance to beat the key division rival he promised to and his last chance to show that he can win against a "good team". I predict failure yet again though I agree the pink slip won't officially come until Januaray.
OK gotcha. I doubt 2 weeks is enough, but I get what he and others are suggesting now. I thought some people wanted Toub to replace Lovie next year too.

I don't know... I'm not tryign to stick up for him, but I'm not sure how much Lovie ever had to do with that aspect of the team. He's not signing and releasing players.

He can't keep this teams special teams together anymore... you can blame it on rule changes and Hester all you want, but what does that show? That he can't adapt? What makes anyone think he is gonna make an impact coaching a team in two games? Or are we suggesting letting him try and HC for an entire season, just to, you know, see what happens?
Tommy did you forget that Toub was a HC candidate in Miami this past offseason and he will probably be again before his career is over? Toub also has far more of a background in offensive football and might be counted on to keep the defensive staff largely intact.

I don't know what gripe you have against his STeams other than the fact that Hester isn't producing. The coverage teams still rank at the top of the NFL even though he's lost his top gunners over the years as well as a few of his top blockers and tacklers yet his coverage teams always get rebuilt and do well.

All I was saying was that if we were to let Lovie go now (not gonna happen) then Toub is the guy I'd put in his place and Toub is a guy I would consider and interview for the Bears HC spot if Lovie gets the axe after the season is over. I believe he's a viable candidate and should be considered.

Well with all the so called coaches , that are going to be fired at the end os the season, and the agruement that the Bears will have a tough time getting a new head coach. Lovie losses this week, fire his arse, that way they can start looking NOW. ( kinda a J/K, but............)

That's exactly what I was suggesting IF Emery made a move prior to the end of the season. If it comes it would come after a huge loss to GB and while I think a loss on Sunday is pretty much a given I believe Phil Emery has too much respect for Lovie to ever let him go before seasons end. Whatever the outcome of the 2012 season it will belong to Lovie lock stock and barrel.

Toub has proven over the years that he's been able to handle high amounts of player turnover and still field some of the top ranked STeams in the NFL and I don't just mean on returns. His coverage teams are always excellent and he often builds from within or with low draft picks and FA types as his key players.

Case in point. Corey Graham was the top STeams tackler last year but we lost him in FA. Anyone recall who was second? It was DeCicco who was lost early to an injury but recently re-signed after Urlacher's injury. So even without out two top tacklers and both gunners from last season (Graham and Bowman to begin with) we still have top coverage teams and Bowman has returned and made and impact with a forced fumble and recovery his first game back.

Dave Toub has proven himself to be a very capable STC and has garnered interest from others for their HC openings. It would be foolish not to at least make him one of the first guys we interviewed if we let Lovie go. Who else knows the team any better than he would.

But there are a number of better, more qualified people to hand over the HC job to. Whomever gets the HC job, will be here for awhile. Years. So let's not hand the reigns over to Dave Toub when we can get a REAL head coach.

The Chicago Bears job would attract some high-powered candidates. I'm not a big proponent of making our QB coach our OC either. Nothing against Bates. But his only claim to fame is 1 season as OC of Seattle - where he was promptly fired after one season. Guys, we can do better. Why are we always so eager to "settle" on mediocre coaches and mediocre players here?

MEDIOCRE COACHES + MEDIOCRE TALENT = MEDIOCRE SEASONS

    Algebraically it's: MC + MT = MS
And we've had too many of those MS seasons over the past 50+ years. Let's do better this time around.

We all wonder "why" the teams and seasons end up disappointing us. At some point you need to wake up and realize that EXCELLENCE requires high caliber coaches and players. The best. I don't see Dave Toub and Bates as the best options. We can do better. We should do better.
Sorry brother but you'll have to better define what you mean by a "real head coach". Lombardi and Halas are both dead and buried and those are about the only two guys I would ever define that way and maybe Don Shula as well.

If we let Lovie go we still owe him another $5.5 mil plus the salaries of the rest of the staff who won't be retained by a newcomer from outside the organization. All told that may cost the Bears $10 mil or more. Now add in the cost of bringing in guys like a Cowher or a Gruden who would expect even more than Lovie was getting and their staffs and this could easily be a $20 mil decision at the bottom line.

A guy whose already here like Toub can be gotten for less on a two or at most three year deal. Then you extend the deals of guys he wants to keep around from the present coaching staff to match his deal and you move on with the reconstruction of the Bears.

Anyway you cut it once Lovie is gone Emery will start making some big changes in personnel. Hell he has too. How many key players on that defense will be gone within the next three years? If we have to rebuild this team anyway why do it with a $7 mil per year HC and his $5 mil staff when it could be done just as about as efficiently with a $2 mil HC. Just sayin' you know. The McCaskey's aren't cheap but they're not Jerry Jones either.

I'd be willing to bet the Bears will never attract coaches like Gruden or Cowher to Chicago as long as the team is owned by the McCaskeys and run as it is. Plus most of those guys will want more say in personnel decisions than Phil Emery is likely to be willing to give once Lovie's gone. The best reasons for firing Lovie are countered by some very good ones that say it will be hard to do better as far as an experienced NFL HC goes.

Let's face it. There's a very good chance that Lovie will be back for one more swing at it next year. Only the chance of getting an established guy who may be a better option would interest Emery. There's still enough of the vet core of this team intact to make another run at a championship next year and if that fails look for wholesale changes across the board on both the coaching staff and the roster. The end for this regime is near.
