Here is my definition of a "real" head coach Soul.

A man who lives, breaths, eats and sleeps football (figuratively of course)
A man who is a strong offensive/defensive coach who at least has an idea of what to do with the other side of the ball.
Someone who players want to play for, and has the respect of his players and his fellow coaches.
Someone who is not afraid to take control of the offense or the defense at a given moment in a given game if an in place game plan is not working.

    What I do not need...

A motivator. These guys are professional players and should not need to be motivated to play well. It is your job, you should already be motivated to do so.

A fire and passion guy who yells and screams on the side lines, grabs his players by the face masks ect. Maybe its just me, but I find it hard to respect someone who is yelling at me while I am working.

After the forth ot fifth time of making the same mistake, Yea I'm yelling at the guy. Don't want to get yelled at ,don't keep making the same mistake over and over. Don't want to hear me yelling cause of it and you will continue to make the said mistake, find a new job.If I dont stop said mistakes , it could cause ME to lose MY job.

Well Benji the first set of characteristics is more in line with Lovie and he's never won a world championship and IMHO never will.

The second set fits guys like Lombardi, Halas, and yeah even Ditka to a tee and collectively they've won around 20 world championships.

Maybe it's just be but I think I'll skip the one from column A and take three from column B instead. Charge me extra if you have to.

I could name a few coaches who were calm cool and collected who won a boat load of titles too.

Good then you hire them to coach your team and I'll take my three to coach mine. I could add Shula too. Another guy who wasn't always calm cool and collected on the sidelines and even worse in team meeting from what I've read.

Look I think Lovie is a great guy and a wonderful human being but what he isn't is a very successful NFL coach any longer. If players can get worn out and replaced so can coaches. Maybe that last big dollar extension Lovie got has made him a little too complacent as well.

I don't see any imperatives to win coming from him and I sure as hell don't see it from his team with the exception of a handful of guys who play the way they do because they have a lot of pride in their performance and it's what makes them perennial all pros.

    The rest......pftttt.

From all I have heard, Lovie's calm demeanor is only on the sidelines. The players say he tears into them in the locker room.

Bottom line, I do not believe having some screaming coach on the sidelines makes you play better. Do you work better having someone yelling at you?

I believe we can attract a solid coach now that we have a better GM, and George M. is now our CEO. He's not the typical McCaskey from the past. I believe he's motivated to bring some Lombardi's to Chicago.

Just because we've "settled" for mediocrity in the past, doesn't have to define our future.

Lovie Smith is not our only option. Neither is our quarterback coach. We can attract a top tier guy here in Chicago. There is a lot to build on here, with a rock solid coaching staff & Emery having another off season to plug a few more holes.

    I'm hopeful.
    Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

If you were in a competitive sport and came off the sidelines after screwing up and your coach looked cool, calm, and collected on the sideline, how are you going to play. Now compare this, if you come off the sideline, your coach yells at you, you get ticked off, and you play ticked off. This is what the Bears are lacking is the intensity.

Does one work better having someone tell them all the time "It's ok, just try harder next time" over and over? Why is it coaches are fired more often then replacing the whole ( almost) team? The BOSS gets the most outta what he has to work with. Why is it the CEO is the one fired and NOT the whole work force? SOME perform better on the QUIET, SOME when pushed to the limit. A good leader WILL KNOW the difference. Not everyone is the same, nor should be treated the same.

because it is easier to replace one than to replace 50? You can push employees/players ect. without yelling at them.
