Lovie may in fact be back for a lame duck year, or even be renewed. I am not a Lovie fan, but this is a religious discussion with some -- people are just not going to change their minds about this. I need to get a current list, but using this for now

I'm not going to rehash what has already been hashed over, but I would like to put Lovies value into perspective. Lovie is the 4th highest paid coach in the NFL. We are not getting top 4 coaching value out of him. There are 4 coaches that will play for the SB semi-finals each year. A top four team should be in those playoffs, if not consistently then at least deep enough in the playoffs to at least be close to being a contender. Top 4. That is pretty elite territory - and he is actually tied for #3 but listed at #4. I think Chicago deserves a top 3 or top 4 coach, but paying him like one does not make him one. Saying Hester is a #1 WR, does not make him so, and paying Lovie as a top 3 or 4 coach does not make him a top 3 or 4 coach. Results is what matters and both Hester and Lovie do not meet the value/results criteria.

Does anyone that is a Lovie backer really think we are getting a top 3 or 4 value from Lovie?

    Edit:

New numbers place Lovie @ #5

    1. Bill Belichick 7.5M
    2. Mike Shanahan 7.0M
    3. Jeff Fisher 7.0M
    4. Pete Carroll 7.0M
    5. Lovie Smith 6.0M

I think the same arguments are valid though.

How many firer Lovie threads do we need. Lovie isn't going any damn where period. The Bears never leave money on the table. The only thing about Lovie that I don't like is he know very little about the Offense answer bring in the best OC we can get.

Let's see how this plays out. It won't be very long before we know which way the winds are blowing.

Dabears54 or Motownbear because I hate both of those guys and it would give me plenty of ammo to bash the bears again. lol

    I think you're right JJ.
    Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

I don't see how Lovie survives if (ahem...when) he loses yet again to Green Bay this Sunday. I could be wrong, but I think his future career rides on this one game.

Tom Clements doesn't have enough on his resume to have me convinced he would be good. Maybe he has been important in the development of Rodgers and Flynn and he's not the only one responsible for that. That's 2 players; there are 53 players on a team that need to be managed on top of the coaches. Not sure I'd be behind that choice 100%.

I've considered who I'd hope gets interviewed or targeted in the case of Lovie getting fired, which I don't think is the best option but I see the reasoning behind it if we don't make the playoffs.

This is the list I came up with.

    Offensive Background
    David Shaw Stanford <-------Preferred
    Brian Billick
    Bill O'Brien PSU
    Greg Olson JAX

    Defensive Background
    Mel Tucker JAX <-------Preferred
    Vic Fangio SF
    Perry Fewell NYG
    Mike Zimmer CIN
    Steve Spagnuolo NO
Shaw from the college ranks and Billick from the pro ranks would be high on my list. Lovie tried to get Perry Fewell a few years back but he went to NY where he could run HIS defense instead of Lovies. Smart man!

I'm really not in favor or hiring another DC type as HC. We've been through that now for the past 20 years starting with Wannstedt and seldom hand an effective offense more than one or two years out of that entire period of time.

We have players at skill position with All Pro level talents and a rapidly aging defense that will soon need to be remade anyhow. It's time to bring in coaching that can do for the offense what a guy like Jim Harbaugh has done down in Houston. The Bears cannot win a championship on the strength of just their defense. That was proven back in 2006 and it's been proven every year since.

If we make a change at the top then see to it that a good DC is hired but find a HC with the skills to turn that disastrous moribund offense around. The tools are there they just need direction.

For 2013 that would be my solution as well but I'll lay you whatever odds you want that Bates is a good as you'll get unless Lovie's deal is extended and he can offer another OC some security. And from my perspective there is no way in hell Lovie deserves an extension now or anytime before we see what the results of the 2013 season might be. Right now he's a loser on a bad losing streak that's lasted way too long.

I like the Tom Clements pick too.
In terms of the candidates with an offense-based background, I'd put his name at the top of the list.
I don't want another defensive-minded coach, been there, done that (& got big, fat zilch to show for it).

I don't think Gruden or Cowher are realistic as those are guys who would seek more control than the Bears are likely to offer.
History shows that the Bears aren't likely to pursue coaches with those types of price tags anyway.

I think Clements is a guy who could help coach-up Jay's mechanics & teach him certain intricacies of playing the position --- help make him more like Aaron Rodgers and less like Vinny Testaverde.

Tossing a few Offensive Names out there several good ones but one name for giggles.
Les Miles from LSU He's 59 so I don't know if he'd do it but he'd be worth a look.
Chip Kelly from Oregon Yes his offense is unusual for the NFL but with a few tweaks I think it could work out nicely.
Tom Clements from Green Bay knows the NFC North well.
    Greg Roman 49ers OC.
David Shaw he has signficant NFL experience
Sean Payton if he doesn't return to the Saints.
    Jay Gruden

    The giggle.......
Butch Davis.......... Anyone remember how ungodly bad he was????
