We complain about the sports media dissing the Bears each year...
This morning I was thinking about this. The Bears organization (McCaskeys) know they are going to make boatloads of money off of Papa Bear's franchise, no matter how mediocre the product is that they put on the field each year.
Think about it.
Soldier Field is always sold out. No matter how bad the team is. And Bears fans are so loyal to the team, that this will probably always be true. So it's not gonna happen that the fans will boycott the team. I'm not sure that is the answer anyway. So are we powerless to get the team to TRULY try to become an elite franchise? Like the class teams in the NFL?
Or are we doomed to only have that 1 dusty old Super Bowl trophy from 1985 - forever?
The national sports media each year treats us as wannabe's and we complain and whine about how we get dissed. But reality is that the franchise has been pretty disfunctional in the Super Bowl era. I'm talking about WINNING multiple Super Bowls like the elite teams do. Not talking about 1985 forever.
This morning the light bulb went on for me (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer). The sports media is the ONLY help we have in putting embarrassing heat on the Chicago Bears to get their act together. Like paying the big bucks to fire Lovie and Tice and bringing in top-tier coaches, now. If the sports media roasts the Bears this off-season, then that really is "a good thing" and not a bad thing. Even when the media guys that we hate (like Dilfer, Mark Schleref and others) spew their hate on the Bears - maybe these guys are doing us a service.
Otherwise we are always going to be a mediocre team. Right now we are 3rd in the NFC-N. Like our finish last year. I can't believe we're behind the wretched Vikings in the standings now. And we're a joke franchise compared to the Packers. They own us.
Something's got to change. I've been through over 50 seasons, mostly like this one (or worse) and I'm getting pretty tired of it.

ESPN is the cheap, unhealthy fast-food of sports reporting. No one listens to anything Dilfer says, and that probably includes Mrs Dilfer. Maybe someone on here has some insight into how the McCaskey's perceive what's discussed about the team, because I sure don't. But, it has to get to them at some level.

I've said for years the media doesn't hate chicago; it's the 2nd largest media market in the nfl; but what have they had a reason to say ya they'll be good for? This year they finally started giving some credit to the bears and saying ya this could be the year....and what do the Bears do? Crap the bed in Dec....so now a media that already knows the team isn't good on a constant basis will be even less likely to go back to that well in the future when the team looks ready.
You'll see the media fall in love w/this team when management/coaches put together a team to be in love with.

Maybe if the local Chicago media would be a better option that the McCaskeys would be affected by. If the Bears let Lovie go, I can see them hiring another mediocre coach. And I can see the team continuing on in mediocrity. We'll occasionally have a decent year, maybe like THIS year, and make the playoffs. But certainly no Lombardi Trophies are coming. We point to 1985 all the time, but to be honest, I get a bit tired of looking back over a quarter of a century to our lone SB win.
Don't you guys?

I've been tired of it for about 3-4 years. This team since the Indy SB loss has gone the way of the Cubs when they got so close only to watch it crubmle away.
It's time for Lovie to go, another medicore coach or not, he's lasted longer then he should have.

Of course, especially those of us that are old enough to remember the years before SBXX. You could just tell they were becoming one of the premier teams in the league. Exciting times. It was good to be a Bears fan, and still is truthfully. But, like my wife says to me, "If all you do is complain, why do you even bother with them?" Good point. That's why I can't stand bandwagon fans.

I agree. I think it's sad that such a big sport city as Chicago only have one Superbowl win. I hope that will change and we'll walk in into a new era with Emery and be much like the Pats, Packers, NYG etc.
I just don't understand how you can be satisfied with being medicore. Sure you could do worse but you're owning a SPORTS team no player on a sports team want to be medicore. They wanna be the best.. I just hope that I'll in my younth watch the Bears win a SB.
I have seen the Blackhawks win the Stanly Cub, but I have yet to see Bulls win the Larry O'Brien trophy and the Bears to win the Vince Lombardi trophy and as it looks like the Bears will be the last team to win a championship. Sometimes I wonder if the Bears will truly end as the Cubs..
Offtopic: Talking about Hawks makes me so sad that they season will end up being canceled.

From the title of this thread, I was expecting a completely different direction. Could have sworn you were going to say "we rip the media for trash talking our team, when we say the same exact stuff"

Actually, that is a good point too. But it's kind of like family, in that it "seems" ok for us to grouch about the team, because down deep we care about the Bears. The media doesn't give a rip about them.
But maybe the media serves a good purpose when they put heat on the franchise to put a better product on the field next year.

The Chicago Media is an extension of the Bears family.
We fans are Cousins, Aunts, Uncles.... ect.
The Media is like the in-laws
