Brandon Marshall fined $5,250 for throwing ball into the stands
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 21, 2012, 4:19 PM EST
Getty ImagesAfter Bears receiver Brandon Marshall scored a touchdown on Sunday against the Packers, a fan at Soldier Field came away with a souvenir. And Marshall got a fine.
Marshall threw the ball into the stands after scoring, which is against NFL rules. And the NFL has confirmed to PFT that the league fined Marshall $5,250 for his action.
The rationale from the league office is that a player throwing the ball into the stands creates the potential for crowd control problems: If fans are jostling for the ball, someone could get hurt.
Players are allowed to hand the ball to fans in the first or second row, but throwing the ball into the stands costs them. And it cost Marshall this week.

about half the fine of cheap shotting a player and perhaps ending his playing career. Yeah, sounds reasonable.

What did he think this was, a baseball game?
Seriously though, baseball has been throwing balls into the stands for eons. NFL needs to quit this crap and allow the fans to enjoy the game.

But letting fans booze it up as much as they want during the game doesn't contribute at all to fan violence. Ok.

That piles on. Everyone of age can get a drink. But if you see one object flying at you from someone you enjoy watching.... a mini riot could break out.
I understand the rule, but I think this size of a fine is a bit much

Yeah, but it contributes to league revenues. You wouldn't want to mess with league revenues, would you?

I'm thinking if the guy caught it, stick him in at TE. What the hell.

I would love for football to have the same crowd atmosphere as baseball games. Family friendly. Yeah, people drink at baseball games, but its also a place where parents bring their kids, grab some peanuts and enjoy the game.

Come on this is a bit much isnt it? To be honest I've only visited the states once and that was to New Orleans with my brother to watch the niners vs saints game he had tickets for (his mate bailed on the holiday so I jumped in). The crowds over there are completely different to football(soccer) crowds over here in the UK. We wouldn't even think about mixed seating between fans. I think I'd be shocked if the crowd jammed in such a way to injure each other. Has it ever happened before?
