I'd look long and hard at Illinois State's Matt Brown (I live in Bloomington, home of ISU). Brown has everything to be a solid QB at the next level. He broke some of the all time records here at ISU. He's a project, but would be worth investing time in.

Here are the top-20 ranked QB's for 2013:

    Quarterbacks

First of all, I apologize Henry for talking about "other positions". It's all inter-related of course since cap space, draft picks, etc all affect what you could or couldn't otherwise do. But, assuming Emery makes the right moves to right the ship with regard to coaching, OL, receiving options, etc, I think the following is a "happy medium" that represents a reasonable compromise between the (all valid) opinions of various posters here.

QB2: an inexpensive vet from FA
QB3: a promising but raw draft pick from round 4-5

This may provoke laughs but, to prevent wasting precious cap space better used elsewhere, there's a guy on the roster who is a vet with some real NFL experience, would come very cheap, knows the O/players, and could be at least marginally competent as a compromise backup. Why not keep McCown as a cheap #2 and draft a young guy as a #3 who could hopefully move up in a year?

Daniels, Campbell, and Matt Moore are probably "better" (we may be splitting hairs a bit to define that in these circumstances) but would also likely be considerably more expensive. McCown could also be demoted or cut w/o much loss if the young draftee surprised to the upside along the way. It's not like he couldn't be brought back in a heartbeat if there was an urgent injury need for another QB.

just sayin', if most QB fa vets are too expensive and not really that good anyway, why not keep this guy around as a cheap "experienced" backup until a #3 can be moved up the depth chart?

Did Blanchard get snapped up by some other team? I remember he was cut for McCown, but I don't know what happened to him after that. Or is he just not worth even trying to develop?

Henry, thanks for adding reading the Defense, quick release, and accuracy to the list. (Was worried that I may have been describing someone like Tebow.. NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!) All that being said, I have not given this a lot of thought yet. Personally, I'm not entirely confident in my ability to evaluate QB's (Example: there are a fair number of things I liked about KO.) Also, after the season ends, there will be more cuts (coaches, players, likely here and elsewhere, with tape available) which will affect the options as well. Looking to the postseason like we fans are (when our coaching staff is still looking to the playoffs), is a little too far forward for may taste. Guess I will have to start making a list, check it twice...

    BTW, Merry Christmas!

    Or should I say Xaosmas?
"Professional Armchair Quarterback" and other oxymora.....

That scenario probably makes the most sense cap-wise, and I wouldn't have a problem with this at all. McCown is also the only back-up we've had get a win the past two years. Actually three, since our win vs. Carolina in 2010 had nothing to do with either Collins or Hanie. Just sayin' our ROI has been pretty poor on back-ups the past few years, and we keep throwing good money after bad. If we can, for once, develop a good talent at the position, that would pay dividends.

    1. depending on the Coaching staff, we don't know what type of QB we need or want
    2. If we keep what we have, keep McCown and workout with 3 UDFAs - best guys win

    3. I don't really care now as long as we don't know about Lovie
