Sanzenbacher waived to clear roster spot

    By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter
    2:24 PM CST, December 24, 2012

In a move that is likely a precursor to adding help at one of the positions where the Chicago Bears are shorthanded, the team has waived wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher.

The club announced the move Monday after Sanzenbacher was inactive for the 10th time this season the day before in the 28-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. An undrafted rookie free agent from Ohio State last season, Sanzenbacher appeared in five games this year, making one reception for seven yards.

The Bears most likely will be looking to add depth in the secondary after starting free safety Chris Conte left Sunday’s game with a pulled hamstring. They also could shop for help at running back or possibly promote Harvey Unga from the practice squad as Matt Forte is once again nursing a sprained right ankle.

Sanzenbacher was popular with quarterback Jay Cutler last season when he played in all 16 games and made one start. Sanzenbacher had 27 receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns. He was one of the most sought-after undrafted free agents after the 2011 draft and the lockout and it is possible he will be claimed on waivers Tuesday.

Sanz wasn't a great WR, but it's tough for anyone to lose their job on Christmas Eve. I feel bad for anyone in that situation.

always sucks to get fired on the eve of a holiday. But I am sure he will land on his feet somewhere

No suprises here, he landed in the dungeon known and Lovie's dog house; in which there is no escape. Brutal timing though, at least give him until after X-mas.

He'll land somewhere though, he's got potential as a possession wr.

I wouldn't say he was in the doghouse. He just was not good enough to crack the starting lineup, making him expendable. Very expendable. No real loss.

If he ends up in NE or GB, we'll know he'll be just fine

Because they have QBs that can make average WR great.

I'd by the Benj, but what you are saying is he's not good enough to crack this wr group that was missing knox, and for a good portion of the season was missing bennett and/or Jeffery. Which meant that Hester/Weems were both more viable; and I don't believe that.

I do not think that Sanz is anything more than a training camp hero ala Aromasadu. I am sure if he goes to GB or NE he will have a decent career. because they have QBs that can turn mediocre WR into great.

Cutler has a lot of say. He gets OC's fired on a yearly basis. If he wanted Sanz to play, he would have gotten Sanz to play
