What was the primary reason for the offense tanking this season?
What was the primary reason for the offense tanking this season?
Mike Tice (play calling not good enough, bad scheme, can't coach)
Jay Cutler (he's just not a good QB)
Player talent problems (Oline can't block, TE's can't catch or block, receivers who can't catch or run routes)

1. Horrid OL
2. Terrible coaching, playcalling, gameplanning, and personnel management from the OC on down (note: #1 and #2 are very inter-related)
3. Nagging or lenghty injuries, esp. to Bennett, Forte, Bush and Jeffery
4. Lack of receiver talent depth (ie, Hester and Davis)
5. Jay Cutler not exactly lighting it up

I'd prefer a choice of "other" since it's a combination of things.
Tice must be replaced and since I've now decided Lovie should not be retained that should be easily accomplished.
Jay Cutler needs to make better decisions and get more consistent at QB. That will take better coaching than he's had since he left Denver so see the above.
No team can win behind an offensive line as porous as that one and that alone leads to many of Cutler negative issues which will all improve with better pass blocking.
The team badly needs dependable receivers at the TE spot and some improvement by the others. There were far too many dropped passes and poorly run routes this year. See the first sentence for a solution.
In summary for this offense and for the team in general to improve we need better offensive minds and coaches. Change the coaching staff, and I mean the whole damn thing beginning with Lovie, and get a new and fresh start. Sorry jay, tough it out. It's not gonna get any better the way it is. The coaching talent to win behind you isn't there. Let Phil Emery fix that for you now.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

From you premise,
1. Mike Tice - scheme mainly, play calling questionable at times
2. O/L problems
3. Lack of competent TE or consistent #2 WR. Jeffrey and Bennett injuries contributed to a lack of development of our passing game during the season.
4. QB play. Look at how well Jay plays in the 2-minute drill. He's a street baller, not a progression-read, work within the script kind of signal caller. Unless we bring an OC in who runs a no-huddle, he needs to improve his decision-making and focus. I'm a big Cutler fan, but I'm no apologist. He needs to play better.

I'd say Mike Tice. Despite shellacking Indy in the season opener (which, at this point says more about experience than anything), it's obvious that between playcalling and how several players that looked like they were going to breakout last year, Cutler especially, have all regressed, pointing to a fatal flaw in the preparation and technique by the oc from training camp to now. Yeah, the o-line has been bad, but when they play effectively, a wr will drop a game-changing catch or tip the ball for an int, or (mostly lately) cutler will be horribly off target.

Lovie is still due some serious coin, so we might as well get use to LDL (Lame Duck Lovie).
The O-line is terrible and they need at least 2 quality starters somewhere along the line, and hope they can fill in with the rest to put together an acceptable O-line.
The one coach that needs to be fired and sued for all the salary he stole is Drake. Hester catches a ball once in a while, but falls down into the fetal posistion 5 yard before anyone can touch him. None of our WRs have ever run decent routes. What a POS.
When we had blocking TEs they did a poor job of blocking, the one catching TE we ever had was traded away. That position has been handled very poorly, but that is fixable in either the draft or FA.
We can beat the poor teams, but even if we add a few pieces (OL, TE, WR) we will still get outcoached by the good teams. The reality is that my hope is that at the end of 2013 when Lovies contract is up, we will clean house. But i just don't see it happening next year and for Brian, Lance, and Pep that is too bad, they deserved better.

MD, the scores afternoon show is saying that Emery 2-3 weeks ago already started the evaluation process, and regardless of the win last week or a win this week, his decision will be made soley on his feelings towards Lovie being able to elevate the team to SB level. So don't be to sure that LDL is going to be here; and if he is, and Emery really feels that way he'll probably give him an extension, so ldl probably won't exist either way(at least that's my opinion; if Emery thinks he can get the team to a SB why wouldn't he extend him?).
The whole of the O runs through the OL's ability to play; if they cannot the O will fail no matter the skilled positions or qb or oc. And the QB/Skilled players/OC haven't been great either.

Massive Talent Problems.
1. No Offensive Line
2. Only weapon we have is Marshall in terms of WR's. If Bennett and Jeffery could stay healthy it wouldn't have been as horrible.
3. TE's that can't catch.

It all starts up front. If the line can't block it affects EVERYTHING ELSE. TE's have to stay in to block so they can't run routes. The same applies to RB's. We all knew this coming in but there was really nobody Emery could get in the off season to help. Just have to wait for FA & the Draft and go from there. WE NEED BLOCKERS !
