Who's your favorite to replace Lovie, if he is fired?

If Lovie is let go, then who is your favorite to replace him? I'm not asking what you think the Bears will do. I'm asking who YOUR favorite guy is to lead the Bears in 2013?

I cut and pasted some potential candidates from recent news articles below:

    Chip Kelly

    Age: 48
Current job: Head coach, University of Oregon

Kelly has only been a head coach for four seasons at the collegiate level, but he has already established a sterling résumé. He has captured three Pac-10/Pac-12 titles and his team is currently undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the nation. He turned down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job last offseason, but will likely have another NFL opportunity in 2013. His up-tempo offense would need some alterations to work at the NFL level, but his organizational skills and creativity will be very attractive to NFL owners.
NFC executive: "He runs the best practices I've ever seen. I would hire him in a second if I ever had the opportunity."

    (Kevin Terrell/Associated Press)

    Kyle Shanahan

    Age: 32
Current job: Offensive coordinator, Washington Redskins

The Redskins' offense has been the talk of the 2012 NFL season. Robert Griffin III has been outstanding, but the design of the Redskins' scheme has been terrific, as well. Kyle Shanahan is getting a lot of praise around the NFL for quickly developing RG3 and designing a creative offense to fit his skills. Shanahan also was very successful during his two-year stint as the Houston Texans' offensive coordinator. In 2009, the Texans finished with the NFL's fourth-ranked offense under his leadership. Despite being only 32 years old, the son of Mike Shanahan already has coached in the NFL for nine seasons.
AFC executive: "Kyle is extremely smart and he's excellent with quarterbacks. He has all of his dad's qualities and he's going to be a great head coach."

    (Paul Spinelli/Associated Press)

    Mike McCoy

    Age: 40
Current job: Offensive coordinator, Denver Broncos

McCoy has 13 years of NFL coaching experience, including the past four as the Broncos offensive coordinator. Last season, his reputation around the NFL soared as a result of his handling of the transition from Kyle Orton to Tim Tebow. He completely overhauled his scheme in the middle of the season to accommodate Tebow's specific skill set. TheBroncos finished the season with the NFL's No. 1 rushing attack. This season, he has smoothly transitioned his offense to suit Peyton Manning. They are currently ranked fourth in passing. Those rankings highlight McCoy's flexibility and willingness to adapt his scheme to his personnel.
NFC personnel executive: "I don't know Mike personally, but I've taken notice of the job he's done in Denver. He deserves a lot of credit for their success in 2011."

    (Evan Pinkus/Associated Press)

    Perry Fewell

    Age: 50
Current job: Defensive coordinator, New York Giants

Fewell has done an outstanding job with the Giants. Their run to the Super Bowl last season was largely the result of his punishing defensive unit. He has overcome several injuries to key personnel and his reputation around the league is rock solid. He has interviewed for head-coaching jobs in the past, but those teams chose to go in a different direction. Many around the NFL believe he will not be passed over again.
AFC personnel executive: "I've never heard anything negative about him. His results speak for themselves and he deserves a head-coaching opportunity."

    (Duane Burleson/Associated Press)

    Brad Seely

    Age: 56
Current job: Special teams coordinator, San Francisco 49ers

Seely has an excellent résumé and should garner consideration for any head-coaching vacancies following the season. He has coached in the NFL for 22 seasons, 10 of which were spent as the special teams coach under Bill Belichick in New England. He has transformed the 49ers' special teams unit into the NFL's very best. The fact that Baltimore's John Harbaugh has successfully made the transition from special teams coach to head coach should help Seely's candidacy.
Former player: "Brad was very well respected in our locker room. He is very detailed and he knows how to communicate."

    (Ross D. Franklin/Associated Press)

    Ray Horton

    Age: 52
Current job: Defensive coordinator, Arizona Cardinals

Horton has quickly established a strong reputation as one of the NFL's top defensive minds. Following a 10-year playing career, he's been a successful assistant coach for 18 years. He served as the secondary coach for the Steelers prior to joining the Cardinals staff as defensive coordinator. TheCardinals have one of the NFL's top defensive units and Horton's scheme is broadly praised around the league.
NFC personnel executive: "He's going to be impressive during the interview process. He's very smart and confident and he has the ability to relate to everyone."

    (Andrew Weber/US Presswire)

    Bill O'Brien

    Age: 43
Current job: Head coach, Penn State

It is highly unlikely that O'Brien would depart Penn State after only one season on the job. He has an incredibly expensive buyout clause in his contract and that would be a major deterrent to potential NFL suitors. That being said, he is a very hot name around NFL circles. He was a successful assistant under Bill Belichick and he has shown incredible leadership in guiding the Penn State program through an extraordinarily difficult situation.
Former AFC personnel executive: "Knowing Bill, he has too much integrity to leave those kids, but he's eventually going to be a very successful NFL head coach. He's very tough and organized and he's a winner."

    Peter King's list:

    5. I think these sound like the top five college coaching candidates for NFL head coaching jobs, per chats with front office people in the last two weeks (in order):
    1. Chip Kelly, Oregon
    2. David Shaw, Stanford
    3. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame
    4. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa (even coming off the bad season at Iowa, he's well-respected in the NFL)
    5. Doug Marrone, Syracuse.

    6. I think these sound like the top 10 NFL assistants who will get sniffs for head coaching jobs in the league next year (in order):

    1. Mike McCoy, Denver offensive coordinator
    2. Mike Zimmer, Cincinnati defensive coordinator
    3. Vic Fangio, San Francisco defensive coordinator
    4. Perry Fewell, Giants defensive coordinator
    5. Dirk Koetter, Atlanta offensive coordinator
    6. Dave Toub, Chicago special teams coordinator
    7. Bruce Arians, Indianapolis interim head coach/offensive coordinator
    8. Ray Horton, Arizona defensive coordinator
    9. Kyle Shanahan, Washington offensive coordinator
    10. Clyde Christensen, Indianapolis quarterbacks coach.

Does it matter? If Cutler looks like crap after year one some fans will call for his head and say he is to blame anyway.

I don't know that I have a favorite. I'd have to think about it more than I have.

This much I will say though. It's kind of a shame that the Skins managed to draft RGIII and turned their fortunes around. I was kind of hoping that wouldn't happen since Shanny and his son would have been a perfect combo to bring into Chicago with Cutler and Marshall here if he got let go. There aren't many better offensive minds in the NFL than Shanny and it looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree but Kyle is probably too inexperienced yet to take on a HC spot.

Of the others I'd probably have some issues with some of the college coaches. Few seem to to do well in the modern NFL. Kelley for instance, IMHO, despite his positives would be a poor choice with Cutler as the Bears QB. I think he'd also be hamstrung by NFLPA rules that limit what you can and can't do in practices and how many you can have.

In fact that may be an issue with all of the college coaches and for me that would place them down below a guys with NFL experience on my list. My feeling is the main reason Harbaugh has been successful in SF, besides having some damn good players, is that he has had NFL experience as a very good QB and also comes from a coaching family. His bro does well with the Ravens so it's in there blood. The Bears seldom get that lucky.

I think when yo begin to look at the NFL OCs who should get a look Mike McCoy's name has to come up early. He's done a great job of adjusting that offense to adapt it to the skills of his current QB although how much Manning needs him is questionable since he's typically his own play caller. Still he's done a nice job with their passing attacks and resurrected a pretty moribund running game. The other factor is that Emery would familiar with his work being a former AFCW guy for a while himself.

Perry Fewell probably leads the list of DC prospects but you have to wonder if that wouldn't just get us Lovie Smith v2.0. Lovie wanted to hire Fewell as his DC before he promoted Marinelli to that role but was turned down. Maybe that was because he didn't want to coach in Lovie's shadow and figured he'd do better in NY behind Coughlin. If that perceived obstruction is now out of the way he may consider the HC spot. You certainly have to put him on the A list if you figure he can bring in a guy who can run his offense. If not it'll just be Lovie Smith all over again.

I think the other guy we have to add to the list is our own STC and not SFs. Dave Toub got a sniff from Miami last year and I think he'll continue to show up on teams A lists until one day, just like Frazier and Rivera, he'll get his shot. If we have to replace Lovie but would like a guy who would probably keep part of the staff in place and therefore assure more continuity and also a guy who has the same kind of respect from the players that Lovie gets then you have to put Toub on the list. He may be the wild card here but In think his personality would and coaching style would be a refreshing change of scene for Bears fans and he certainly know the team, it's personnel and the traditions.

So no favorites but these are three guys I'd have on my A list if I was Phil Emery.

I guess that explains why you're a Cubs fan too. That two "Lovie"...able losers you're pulling for and neither of them are gonna win any championships any time soon.

No. If Lovie remains... THAT MEANS WE ARE WINNING.

Just Cutler has to go, right Ben? Other wise Lovie will never win. Why not just make the next QB the head coach?

Jay Cutler needs to learn to make better throws. No way around it. Is he fully to blame? No. But he deserves a big chunk of it. As do the coaches. Lovie and Co. have made mistakes, no doubt about it. But the way some people kiss Cutler's ass sickens me. You would think he was a god who is being made to look like a crappy QB because his coaches put him in bad situations. Cutler makes horrible decisions quite often. But it is okay, the coaches will always be blamed.

As I have said countless times before, players get coaches fired for their poor play just as much as they get fired for poor game calling.

I agree with what you say above. I just think the gameplan and OL are ahead of JC is all. There where some games I wished they would have sat JC for a series, half , game , SOMETHING to hold him accountable. But, how do you sit the HC and his staff. If they wont, then what good are they. JC II is a check off / dump pass QB, he makes SAFER throws. Isn't that KO type of QB? Let the D do it's thing, oh, and of course RUN THE DAMN BALL.
