Smith built a team that had one of the league's best defenses and special teams - every year.
Smith built a team that had one of the league's worst offensive lines most years, and the result was a crap offense.
Lovie Smith had a number of strong points and weak points, but in the end, the lack of an offensive line brought him down. It killed our seasons. That article hit it right on the head. Bringing in Brandon Marshall was just putting lipstick on a pig. Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffery, and the others - COULD NOT OVERCOME A BAD OFFENSIVE LINE.
We all saw this coming years ago. Smith did not. Put it on his coaching grave stone.

Further, and possibly even more importantly, Lovie's lack of understanding of a good offense allowed (or caused) him to hire inept OC after inept OC. A good OC may have slapped some eye shadow and rouge on that lipsticked pig, and actually metamorphose it into a real offense, or at least something that may have passed for mediocre instead of the perennial 27th rank.

I guess you guys will just be upset. Lovie isn't going anywhere.

just ask yourself:
Will we win a SB with Smith?
Do you think Smith will be the Coach that wins for us?
I would answer this with: No, we have seen it long enough and know that this won't happen.

I'm not saying Tice was a good OC, but having this bad of an offensive line severely hinders what you can call out of the playbook. It came down to either max protecting and cutting down the receiver options (sometimes only Marshall running routes) or having 5 o-lineman blocking and having the tight ends and running backs chip before they go out for a pass. I think there were other types of plays (e.g., screens, no huddle offense) that could have slowed down the rush by the other 4 down lineman.
It is hard to judge the offensive coordinator when you are severely limited in what you can do. I think there was an example of a sports car used earlier, one that has the v12 engine but needs to have jet fuel to run off of. The problem is that the offensive line is like putting regular 87 octane in tank.

"Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
Whoa: Bears have sent out consent forms requesting permission to interview head-coaching candidates." That's all she wrote.

It's now being reported that he has been fired, not just consent, Lovie's fired.
