The way I look at it is more long term. I want to win, but I also want to build the team long term.
It's more important to me to get the right coaching staff and mentality here than it is any one player - even the QB.
A good coach will coach for longer than a good QB will play. If we get a winning coach with a winning scheme. we let Cutler see what he can do in that scheme -- and hopefully the coach is good enough to change to what he has to use.
Cutler has not exactly been lighting it up anyways - even when he is protected. I don't want to handcuff management with any particular player. Emery had to live with Lovie and even with more talent he didn't do much better. If you are going to buy into a philosphy that Kelly is the right guy (not saying he is), then you let him do what he needs to do. You have to trust Emery to get the right people here if Cutler doesn't work.
I think you build top down. I like the GM (for now anyway). I say let him pick the very best HC with no limitations and then keep filling as we go down. A good HC will do ok with the guys we have even if he will change them out later. Cutler is more than serviceable. I say give him a chance with a good HC and a good OL. If he cuts it fine, if not, we finad someone else. Hate to say that given our issues at finding QBs, but I guess I am trusting in Emery.

He might have fun.... but do you think he would be successful at it

To me Dirk Koetter looks pretty intriguing. I didn't think Cowher would come w/o GM powers.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Yes . That's a quick read / gun it O . I think he's been thinking too much anyways . He has the arm for it and is athletic enough to run it .

I don't understand why Dave Toub would be seriously considered for a HC position. His resume is thin.
As coach:
University of Texas-El Paso (1986)
Graduate Assistant
University of Texas-El Paso (1987-1988)
Strength and conditioning coach
University of Missouri (1989-1998)
Strength and conditioning coach
University of Missouri (1998-2000)
Defensive line coach
Philadelphia Eagles (2001-2003)
Special teams/Quality control coach
Chicago Bears (2004-present)
Special teams coordinator

Because it is a special team's coach's job to know ALL the players on a team and not to focus on either offense or defense. Because players on both sides of the ball make up the ST unit. He would be a very good in house candidate if Emery wanted to go that way. No one else could tell him exactly what this team needs, and which players can do what.

I would hope that we could get somebody FAR more qualified. It's nice that he was a grad assistant at UTEP, and a strength & dline coach at Missouri, but he's never successfully run an offense OR a defense, much less had any head coach experience on any level. I want to see a guy who has a clue about building an offense to go with our defense. I love Toub as a ST's guy. But that's it. His experience is just not at the same level as many of the other great candidates out there.

Well said. Tom Brady, Drew Brees Eli Manning are all "system qb's", it's just they are REALLY good in those systems, same w/Montana back in his day. If you find the right system for the right qb, many can be great, put them out of those systems and they will struggle. If we can find the right HC to run a system that fits Cutler then I think they will be fine, but if not, find the qb that fits that guy.
