ESPN Chicago's list of 16 candidates for the Bears HC position

um how about Lovie Smith? He was a DC then HC, and Gruden was an NFL OC before HC also, Mike Tomlin was a DC before HC(SB), Sean Peyton was a OC, then Ast HC/QB coach before HC(SB), Gary Kubiak, OC before HC, Mike McCarthy OC before HC(SB).....need I go on? Most HC's start out as coordinators before becoming HC's, and most have their best success in that first run; proven by the fact that no HC that won a SB has ever gone to another team to win a SB on another team. Not even a great HoF coach like Bill Parcels.

As for Jon Gruden, he's a whopping 14 games over .500. 1 div title, 1 sb(1 appearance), and 5 div champs in 14 years. How is that a huge upgrade over Lovie Smith? Lovie doesn't have the SB team, but in his 9 years he was 18 games over .500, 1 div title, 0 sb's(1 appearance), and 3 div champs. Not to mention this guy(ya that's right I went there) is going to want more power, and more money then Lovie. Just stop w/the Gruden talk, he's WAY over rated.

Gruden had success the first half of his coaching years, then fell off. From '98 when he started with Oakland through '02, when he won the SB with TB, he had a record of 50-30, or a winning % of .625. However from '03 - '08 he was a below mediocre .469 winning %, and 45-51 overall, with only one 10+ win season ('05). Considering how the game has changed in the past ten years, or seven since his last 10 win season, how up to date is he really? It is amusing that a guy can become an expert on the TV, and he's perceived a genius so we must get him. Why wouldn't ESPN promote him in "Best Coaches Available" segments, or any other media? It gives them, and their ex-player/coaches, more cred. By this reasoning we should be clambering for Dilfer to come to Chicago, replace Bates, and fix Cutler. All this IMHO.

Dilfer? Yikes, that's a nightmare thought...

The only scarier person would be Mark Schlereth.

Ya people have the fond memory syndrome for Chuky b/c he had a good 3-4 year run. If that's all it takes, might as well have kept Lovie, for his 3-4 year run. People just not thinking when it comes to these former guys that were once greats, thinking you can capture that old magic easier then finding a young gun.

I'm with you Ricza. When I think of Gruden I think more about when he had like 6 or 8 QBs under contract at once in Tampa. He had QB ADD. It reminded me of Lovie with the safety position for a while there. It was a joke. At the end of his tenure in Tampa, they collapsed as well. I suppose the man is human and can learn lessons from his mistakes, just like the rest of us, but I'm just not enamored as many seem to be with him.
