Actually most head coaches are more respectful and transparent with the media. This doesn't mean they have top reveal things that obviously should be kept within the team organization. But most of the presser questions asked of Lovie were not to reveal deep dark secrets. They were just asking questions that were appropriate - things fans wanted to know about.
Some coaches and players forget that the fans are the ones who pay their salaries (directly or indirectly). If there is nobody watching or caring about the team, then there is no revenue (not even TV contracts or sports paraphernalia sales).
When there is an obvious situation that cries out to be addressed, Lovie would not honestly talk to the media about it. It was insulting the fans and media (I think, anyway). Why not be like other coaches and be a bit humble and candid?
Some head coaches are downright entertaining in admitting some things didn't work, and the honesty is appreciated. At least I appreciate it. Lovie basically acted like he was peeing on us, and telling us it was rain. I liked a LOT about Lovie Smith, but his pressers I didn't like. And I think Ric hit the nail on the head - this may have colored the attitude of his players.

Lovie often times told us things didn't work. He just didn't say why it didn't work. He was fine with the media, for the most part. Just not Brad Biggs. He hated Biggs, who might actually be the best football media guy in town. He actually does his job and digs to get the story out ASAP.

When I think about Lovie's pressers, I am reminded of Ditka's assessment of Papa Bear's handling of money issues. Ditka always said Halas through nickles around like manhole covers. I believe Lovie through meaningful information to the fans like manhole covers
Lovie's gone, so I don't want to beat up on the guy now. I liked Lovie Smith a lot. I'm just saying this one aspect of his, drove me nuts - and I agree with Ric, in that this may have had a negative affect upon the players attitude towards the fans and media.

I fully understand that. But not many coaches really reveal meaningful information. People seem to think that Lovie is alone in this catagory

True. Ever heard a Belichick presser conference? Dude says absolutely nothing.

Ric:
You may have hit the nail on the head there. The players were never like that before. He may have instituted that culture and attitude. Even Belichick although he says nothing is respectful to the media and so are his players. There is a difference between politely giving information and giving information with a little distain thrown in.
Well, Lovie is gone and let's see what sort of future we have coming in the new year.

I'm pretty critical of Hester's WR play, but I can't hate on him for being emotional here (he's always been a very emotional guy). I'm a pretty emotional guy myself. I might have done the same type thing in his shoes. I give him a break on this one.
p.s. I started to type "I give him a 'pass' on this one....but thought better of it. He doesn't do too well with 'passes'

BINGO.
Heat of the moment, when a coach is fired, loyal players tend to react. Those that lack wisdom react publicly. I'm sometimes amazed that *more* players don't react like idiots to this kind of thing. I think of them as spoiled by the years of adulation so I expect neither wisdom nor restraint. Of course, a lot of them have good agents who may get a message to them early in this process.

Theese comments are I think from a realization that his security blanket is gone and now he looks to be an average returner and a joke of a WR, but lets be serious he's not going to retire being one short of the all time record and if he had any brains in his head at all he would welcome not bring a wr, trying to house one or 2 more and sealing his HoF career at the top.
How much you wanna bet if lovie gets a HC job he asks for a trade?

I think most of these comments (especially Hester's) are based strictly on heat of the moment emotion. Hester has seemingly looked upon Lovie as a father figure. Someone that always stood up for you and looked out for you. Add in his less than...... seemingly low intelligence rate, it did come off as a childish reaction. But again, Devin Hester is a manchild.
