Here's something hypothetical..
If you woke up tomorrow to the headlines that Ditka has been rehired by the Bears as coach, would you feel nostalgic bliss, or would you feel very worried about the future of the team?
I'm BACK, Jack... or something..

I would think the Mayans were right after all.

I'd be sick. I love Ditka, but he was not a great coach. He was the benefactor of exceptional talent, and under-performed with that talent. He killed New Orleans when they hired him. Just crippled the franchise.
We should have had 2 or 3 Super Bowl appearances under Ditka, but he blew it.
But I love the guy. BTW, I heard him say just a few days ago that he would never coach again.

Ditka is waxing idiodic around Chicago still living off that 85 SB team chocked full of Probowlers and HoF'rs he inherited.

I agree with the 2-3 appearances thing. But, I'd also have to say that it was a BAD time to be great in the NFC... They always had the Redskins, 49ers, and Giants hogging the top spot with them. Maybe a combination of him and the era..

I thought Ditka was a great coach and exactly what we needed at the time. Halas was a great talent evaluator and he hand picked Ditka as his coach. I would want no part of Ditka at this point in his life. He is just too old and you have to be pretty healthy to take the stresses of NFL coaching -- the stress, the long hours, etc. Is Ditka the right man with the real drive needed at this point in his life? I honestly think he is better off doing his appearances and managing his business interests right now.
He would be a much worse coach than Lovie was at this point in time, and I didn't think too much of Lovie. I am a huge Ditka fan, but no thanks.

I wouldn't really say "inherited." There were only 16 players on the 1981 roster who were also on the 1985 one - 12 if you exclude holdouts Harris and Bell, along with Jeff Fisher and me (Baschnagel). That leaves about 40 guys that arrived under Ditka's watch, including the prodigious '83 draft. Though, he could've done better with what he had, I also cite the NFC monsters that existed in those days. I would've hated to peak while the 'Skins, 49ers, and Giants were bloodthirsty.
However, the Bears woulda won in 1984, 1986, 1987, and maybe 1988 if they played Brian Baschnagel the way they should've. Yeah, I said it.

Ditka is one of my all-time favorites, and loved him as our coach. (You're coach, specifically
). I still blame Charles Martin slamming McMahon into the turf at hurting our chances for gettting 2nd or 3rd SB. He was never the same after that injury.
