Brees: Carmichael is one of the best offensive minds and play-callers

Pete Carmichael, OC of the New Orleans Saints:

It would shock no one if offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. is the next to go.

There are worse things for an aspiring football coach to have on his resume than being the play-caller for the most prolific offense in NFL history. Not too many coaches can say they were the ones dialing up the runs and passes for the offense that set more than a dozen NFL records in a season.

Pete Carmichael interviewing for Chicago Bears job, source confirms ProFootballTalk.com report

New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. is reportedly interviewing with the Chicago Bears as they seek a replacement for Lovie Smith. ProFootballTalk.com reported the news Wednesday evening, and a league source confirmed the report to NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.
Carmichael is scheduled to interview with the Bears on Thursday.

Carmichael gained attention last season when he took over the play-calling duties from Sean Payton after the Saints' coach injured his leg during a game and was forced to the coaches box. With Payton suspended for the year, Carmichael called all the plays this season as quarterback Drew Brees threw for a league-high 43 touchdowns and more than 5,000 yards for the third time.

At his last press conference of the season, Carmichael stressed how much he and his family love New Orleans.
"Really over the last year plus, there's been more responsibility (with the Saints), which I think is a positive for myself," Carmichael said last week. "But, I'm not even thinking about those things. This is the place I want to be. I love it here. My family loves it here. This is what we consider our home."

Carmichael interviewed for openings with Oakland and Indianapolis last year and was mentioned as a candidate for the Boston College opening as well. Carmichael would be a dramatic change for the Bears as Smith is a defensive coach.

This is what Brees had to say about Carmichael at the end of the 2011 season, a year in which Brees broke Dan Marino's single-season passing yards record: "I'm so proud of Pete. To watch the job he has done and watch him progress as the season has gone on. I just know I consider Sean one of the best offensive minds and play-callers there are. To watch Pete now approach that level, I assume that there's a high demand for guys like that."

Carmichael's father, Pete Sr., coached for four decades in college and the NFL, including a stint as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 2000, where he gave Pete Jr. his start in the league as an offensive assistant. Carmichael Jr. also coached with the Chargers where he began his long association with Brees.

You can't deny his success, but I guess what I'd be worried about is that he had Drew Brees at QB (completely different QB than Cutler) and an outstanding OL. You can do a lot of stuff when you have one of the best QB's in the game and an OL that gives him time to work. The Bears have neither so I just don't know that his success in NO would translate to Chicago.

I agree, but each candidate has these supposed red flags. Clements doesn't call he plays and has only been OC for one year. McCoy's greatest success came with Peyton Manning (and we all assume Manning is the OC anyway). Unless a candidate comes forth who has been OC for three or more years, calls the plays and has had success despite having a terrible offensive line and a bad QB, there isn't anybody who couldn't be considered flukey in some way.

I think he would be a good coach.. he has been around a lot of success offensively there in NO... on top of that NO has never really had a dominant reciever and they have put up those numbers. Brandon Marshall is more talented than any WR NO has ever had... and if we were to draft eiffert, he would be like a jimmy graham clone

I just saw that Carmichaels' contract is up with the saints. Essentially, it's possible to get him as OC.

Bears getting him as OC would do wonders for Cutler, Forte, Garza, and company! Like he did for Brees, Graham, Saints, etc.

I agree with all this and that is where homework and interviewing technique comes in. They have to look and see if they can find any previous insights to success that can be directly attributed to him to try to reinforce the trend or whether the cause and effect link can not be proven. The questions you ask, how he answeres and reacts to them are all clues to a good interviewer. How specific he can get, if the answers can be coroborated, etc.
