You know, I did hear that. It didn't click that's what he was referring to, but I suspect you are spot on with that. Seeing how Emery operates he would never say anything bacd about Lovie, just say what he is looking for and let it go.

    Good catch.

On what he wants from the new head coach: “I want somebody to have some warmth that pulls everybody together in that we have synergy not only with our players but everybody in the building to work towards our common goal. Upbeat and positive. Everybody has a different personality. Everybody represents themselves in a different way, but those qualities are paramount. We all want to work together in a position environment towards winning championships.”
“I want somebody that’s good on their feet. I think working with the media, not only in Chicago but in a national sense is very important. I want this person to stand up and represent us well. It’s a very tough job. It’s very demanding. Wins and losses weigh heavily week to week. There needs to be a level of consistency in this individual in how he presents himself, not only when we’re up but when we’re down and how we’re going to rebound from being down.”
Note: I think the mention of how the coach works with the media was a direct shot at Lovie who never had a great relationship with the Chicago media.

I'm not really sure why they care how the coach reacts to the media. History is littered with good coaches that had a salty attitude towards reporters. You don't get extra credit for being popular with the media.

Track, different time/era. You can get away w/that if you are winning(bellechick and multiple sb's), but it's a surefire way out of town if you are losing.

I don't know why anyone is surprised that Lovie isn't getting more interest. We've been watching this team for 9 years and what we have seen is the reason he isn't getting more interest. I'm not about kicking someone when he is down, but Lovie Smith and his family are going to be just fine, even if he never works another day in his life. If my math is correct, he's made nearly $30 Million Dollars over the last 9 years, so to be worried about him or even feel sorry for him is a little silly when you think about it. There are people that retire at 54 after they have earned far less and they live very comfortably.

With all that said, those that are looking for a coach are looking for more than just a winning record, they look at how they got there. Let me ask you guys one thing about the Bears winning seasons under Lovie; how many games that we won did you feel comfortable that we would win by the end of the third quarter? My answer is "not many". Why? Because even when the Bears were winning, they seldom looked like they should be. We are ALL football fans on this board and we have all watched hundreds and hundreds of professional games. The reason we never felt confident, even in wins, is because we know what a good football team looks like, and we seldom saw it under Lovie Smith. Even in those winning seasons, we often looked bad in the wins we enjoyed. Hell, our Superbowl year we only played 3 winning teams during the season and your can thank Devin Hester for much of the success we had that year and everyone knows it. Our offense was weak then as well, but Devin provided field position that even Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman could work with.

Also, before Lovie is given so much credit for the Defense, lets keep in mind that many of the key elements of said defense were already there for him, Including Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Mike Brown, and Tommie Harris (came in the same year as Lovie). There are MANY defensive coaches that would LOVE to have such a group already in place, but even with that, look at the annual circus we've had Safety under Lovie Smith. How many Defensive Linemen have we spent on draft picks and terrible trades. I know people want blame Angelo for all that, but come on, the head coach had a lot of say and everyone in the league knows that a SB coach gets more say in the groceries, well, go back and look at the Bears W-L record since he started picking more of the groceries.

Ultimately, I'm not hating on the guy, but man, when you look at the body of work outside of simply the win-loss record, what exactly is there to think that this guy will land a job that quickly. I'm not even convinced his Defense would have been as good as it was if he had not been blessed with a future HOF MLB and a perennial Pro-Bowl OLB (Lance Briggs), not to mention Peanut, and Mike Brown.Once Brownie left, our Safety spot has been a week point ever since.

Lovie Smith IS NOT (at least in my opinion) a "very good" or even "good" coach, but I'm not suggesting he is "bad" or "poor" either. He is "Mr. Average" and "Mr. Average" does not usually rise to the top of HC lists.
The Greatest form of revenge is MASSIVE success.

Isn't winning the goal? Using this logic, Bellechick should never have been hired because "what if" they lose?

The GM should be concerned about finding a guy that will win. Not worry about how he will be perceived if he doesn't.

Personally, I think he was referring mainly to how he conducts himself with the players, and personnel at Halas Hall, and mentioned the media as an aside. It's something to consider, but you wouldn't ever pass up a coach with superbowl capabilities for one that doesn't have the same capabilities yet has good media presence.

Track, no idea what NE was looking for, nor do I know anything about BB before he got to NE, so I could not be inferring that. But his salty attitude is not near as aggressive as Lovie was toward the media; there were times that Lovie was just shy of Hostile, and normally was walking the line of degrading in how he talked to the media. BB might not give anything, but I've never got that from him.

Yall know who starts this - how well will the new HC treat the media talk comes from dont cha ? Da MEdia . Them same big bunch of overly self-important arrogant " look at me " , I'm in a tie and a suit and I work for ________________ . The " I'm sooo IMPORTANT !" buffoons who often ask moronic football questions , then wonder why coaches sort of roll their eyes when they have to talk to "this" guy again .

Also the same media who have no problem baring their fangs and writing an over the top RIP-JOB article on a player / or do the same thing on a radio or tv show ..... then expect that player to be nice to him ? That media ? The kind that band together and try to run certain players out of town sometimes cuz they don't like him , cuz they don't get their asses kissed ? That MEdia ?
The ones who CREATE the antagonistic atmosphere in the first place ? then try to shift all blame to the players when they don't react ( to this BS ) with a phony chum chum attitude ?

It should be a two-way street shouldn't it ? And it could be - except for the fact that there's alot of media members who like to plant land mines up and down that street all the time. So WHO'S FAULT is it when this relationship goes awry ?

F the media . It used to be good . Now it's turned into a sewer . A sewer filled with hack writers in crocodile suits .
I Love Lou " Dr. Slushmouth" Holtz .

I really think Cleveland would be the best place for Lovie. I really think within 2-3 years of having a legit oc, he could take them to the playoffs and stay there for a while like he did here. Whoever the GM would be should hire Angelo (just to pick cover 2 personnel) and get Weems some more help, and they're good to compete.
