Article on demand for Lovie caught my eye

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised too. He is above average and many of these teams just won't be able to do better than that. Even if it's just compliance with the Rooney rule, I expected more action. I'm glad he's gone, but he's not a bad coach. The flip side is that ownders didn't get to be billionaires by being stupid.

Demand should be higher for Lovie Smith

Posted by Mike Florio on January 3, 2013, 11:47 PM EST
AP Seven coaching vacancies currently exist. (That number could soon be six.) The guy whose termination created one of them — former Bears coach Lovie Smith — reportedly has drawn interest for only two of them.
    The demand should be higher.
Smith led the Bears for nine years, taking them to a Super Bowl and, in recent years, making the most he could out of substandard personnel — especially on the offensive line. Though every team must at some point in a season find a way to overcome injuries, the Bears had plenty in 2011 and 2012, wiping out strong starts. (The absence of a quality backup quarterback in 2011 didn’t help.)
And so, with all the focus on a coach whose Dream Team easily could have been 1-15 or 0-16 in 2012, Smith has been overlooked, for the most part. He’ll reportedly interview with the Bills, and the Chargers now also have interest.
For the former, Smith could pump up an underperforming 4-3 defense. The challenge would be finding the right person to run the offense — and the right quarterback to throw the passes. As to the latter, Smith would have to decide whether to continue with the 3-4 defense that the roster has been built to support, or to install his 4-3 approach.
Regardless, San Diego becomes intriguing because a stout defense to go with a franchise quarterback on offense could be the right formula for success.
That’s why Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who based on his history could indeed be looking discreetly for an upgrade at the coaching position, should be considering Smith. Given Jones’ new focus on “fundamentals,” Smith’s fundamentally sound defense coupled with an offensive coordinator who can get the most out of Tony Romo could be exactly what the Cowboys need.
It could be exactly what Smith, a Texas native, needs, too.

I don't want the Cowgirls to experience any consistency. I'm still getting over their 90's run.

    I'm BACK, Jack... or something..

Looks like Buffalo is already looking to get him. Wonder if Anderson would want to play for him again..

What's with Buffalo's fascination with the Bears' fired coaches?

It's almost as weird as Rex Ryan's foot thing...

    I'm BACK, Jack... or something..

Looks like Wisenhut (spell?) is the frontrunner for the Bills and it's his job.

I'm not sure why this is a story... Smith isn't that good to get a job that fast. His O sucks and we are in an offensiv NFL. I wouldn't want to hire him and I would have fired him too

You hire Lovie Smith if you have a good or decent offense, and you need help building a defense. You hire him to help a very undisciplined team (say like the Lions) and you want someone to keep them in line.

I still think Lovie is a very good coach. Not a great coach, but a very good coach.

He will be working in 2013, I would not be surprised though if he's not picked up as a HC quick that you'll find him as a DC as someone pieces together their own staff. Lovie has a good enough track record to get hired again as a HC on one of the lower tier teams. I could see him fit well in with the Browns... Holmgren did leave them with a nice young group on the defensive side of the ball.

The national media was suprised and a little in awe that he was fired, so I have no doubt outside of Chicago fans that he'll have a different view. But any team looking to hire him will still have to ask what happened to the O, why it never got going in 9 years, and what he'll do to make sure that doesn't happen w/his new job.

He'll also have to answer to his relationship w/the media, b/c it's been mentioned, in emery's explanation, and supported by HH via sources that people inside HH were not happy w/how he treated the media.

I could see him having to rebuild his image before getting another HC position, or a really bad team taking a shot at him hoping to get to above average.

I like how florio says he made the most of sub standard personel, while ignoring that he helped bring in said personel.....way to ignore facts to help build your story.

Funny! I thought the very same thing about the personnel. We lived it. Florio just covered it.

And I missed the part where Emery referenced his relationship with the press. I may have to go back and hear his talk again. I think that is a big part of the teams attitude towards media and fans (well, at least some of them). Just can't wait to see who comes in here and how things change.

On what he wants from the new head coach: “I want somebody to have some warmth that pulls everybody together in that we have synergy not only with our players but everybody in the building to work towards our common goal. Upbeat and positive. Everybody has a different personality. Everybody represents themselves in a different way, but those qualities are paramount. We all want to work together in a position environment towards winning championships.”
“I want somebody that’s good on their feet. I think working with the media, not only in Chicago but in a national sense is very important. I want this person to stand up and represent us well. It’s a very tough job. It’s very demanding. Wins and losses weigh heavily week to week. There needs to be a level of consistency in this individual in how he presents himself, not only when we’re up but when we’re down and how we’re going to rebound from being down.”
Note: I think the mention of how the coach works with the media was a direct shot at Lovie who never had a great relationship with the Chicago media.

A lot of 670 guys mentioned this the day of and after the press conference specifically; ecspecially about Brad Biggs and his relationship w/Lovie. They said that PC was the first time they saw someone from HH treat Biggs w/any ounce of warmth or respect. Bores or Bernstien even said that Emery was not the only one happy about how Lovie acted toward the media, but also Ted and others in HH were not happy w/it either.

And they shoudln't have been, he wasn't just not giving anything up, he was near hostile at times over the most basic of quesitons. He was arrogant and acted as if no one new the NFL but him in that room.
