Chip Kelly may be finding a home
Chip Kelly looks like he may be going to the Browns.
Disappointing for me. He was high on my list to at least evaluate. I was hoping Emery was at least going to talk to him to see if he could fit here. He is definitely boom or bust though.

The Cleveland Browns are closing in on getting their man.
Oregon coach Chip Kelly is close to a deal to become the Browns’ next head coach, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting.
Kelly has been the most talked-about coaching candidate in the NFL and was believed to have interviews lined up today with the Eagles and Bills as well as the Browns. He was widely regarded to be the top choice of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, and Haslam was reportedly willing to spend whatever it would take to acquire Kelly.
We’ve seen in recent days that the deals that are close don’t always get done, and Kelly hasn’t been hired yet. But it appears that the Browns are the leading suitors for a hot coaching candidate whose unconventional approach has worked wonders in college and is now ready to try his system in the NFL.

Cool, I'm not one for gimmicks, anyway.

His success at his level is so great that in my mind it deserves a conversation as to how he plans on making it work in the NFL and who he would bring in with him. If nothing else, it would be some insight into a future opposing coach. I think we should have at least spoken to him. I would have trusted that Emery would have made the right decision as to whether he would have been successful, but still... I think it was a missed opportunity to at least speak to a potential high achiever.

Nothing against Chip Kelly or any successful college coaches, but I don't consider this a loss. He's a good candidiate for a franchise like Cleveland thats a perennial long-term, turn-around situation. IMO Emery is smart to focus on NFL-experienced coordinators over "boom or bust" options. We aren't that desperate nor are we that far away...

MP - definitely agree that we are not desperate - nor are we far away. I think we are the best opportunity for any of the coaching prospects. And I would say that it is for that very reason that we should talk to all of the successful candidates. We should have the pick of the litter, so anyone that has excelled at their level against others at his same level should be a contender.
No denying he has torn it up at the college level. Is is HIS system that he devised to do it. What is there to say he could not do the same here? Not even necessarily his present system either. If he can put a new spin on what he sees in college ball, what is there to say he does not have to ability to do the same in the NFL? I'm not saying we should take him. I'm saying a guy like that does not come up often. We should at least get a feel for how ready he is for the NFL. At minimum, pick his brain. At some point we will play against him -- if he doesn't do a half season Saban thing! And we may pick up that elusive next Jim Harbaugh. If you don't at least talk to him, you don't know.
Both college ball and pro ball have been around for a long time. All kinds of variations on offenses and defenses have been tried and most everything will eventually get countered. Every once in a while a guy comes around that thinks up something new that actually works and dominates either offensive or defensive thinking for a while while others think up ways to neutralize it. Those guys just don't come around very often. He is one of them. The guy impresses me. He may fail in the NFL, but IMO, there is enough there to at least talk to him.

I like Chip but feel he's still a bit of a wildcard. Still, would have liked to see him interviewed. Next to the Bears, I'd like Cleveland to field a winner.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

I was starting to think I was the only one that liked the guy...

He'll need a new quarterback. Don't see him running that offense with Weeden.

That's just what intrigues me about him. He has already developed one system, who is to say he won't adapt a new system to who he has rather than try to make the players fit the system? Be interesting to see what he can do at this level.

Browns must be throwing a lot of money at him to get him this quick after the Bowl game... or is Kelly pulling a Pete Carroll and running from some potential sanctions!?
