Yes we can. The NFL doesn't differentiate among levels of Assistant Coaches. If an Assistant (Position Coach to Coordinator) is under contract the team must grant approval. Only exception is for a HC position.

Im not for or against this idea. I want whoever our hc is to be able to leave his own imprint on the team. If he wants to keep it status quo on defense so be it. If he has a different approach to implement lets do it and not handcuff his vision for years. I'm cool either way

Really? I didn't think that was the case. I thought we couldn't block an interview if a promotion was involved. So you are saying that is not the case for any jobs below HC that are under contract?

I can't see Emery not wanting a HC that would keep Marinelli. That would probably sway him for one direction or the other in his search

That is correct. I'm not sure why, but an assistant is an assistant. It might have something to do with the fact that there is no set hierarchy on coaching positions. For example, many teams have an Asst HC, that often has a position he coaches as well. So, which is it? Is that coach a TE coach or an Assit HC/2IC of the team? So, I don't really understand, but that may be part of it.

    • The NFL does not differentiate between levels of assistant coaches in its rules regarding their availability to interview with other teams. Whether the coach is a defensive line coach or an offensive coordinator, the rules are the same. If a team wishes to interview an assistant coach who is still under contract with another team for its head coaching position, the current team is required to give permission for the interview as long as it happens between the end of the team's season and March 1. After March 1, teams can still ask, but the current team is not obligated to give permission.
    • Lateral Move

    • An NFL team cannot interview an assistant coach who is under contract as an assistant with another team for the following season without the permission of his current organization. Teams will usually give permission upon request, particularly if a lower level coach is set to take an offensive or defensive coordinator position elsewhere, but the current team is not required to give permission.

this is correct, it's how the packers were able to get away with not giving permission to talk to clements. most the time, teams allow it, but when you're a bunch of bitches like the packers, you stand in the way of the guy.

Wow. Good to know. I guess a contract is a contract unless you want to be a HC. Anyone that is hoping for a promotion to anything other than HC has to you know... actually honor his contract.

What is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander in the NFL.
