Chicago Bears to interview Texans OC Rick Dennison
A long list of head-coaching candidates for the Chicago Bears continues to swell. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirmed Sunday that Chicago has received permission to interview Houston Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, according to sources close to Dennison. ESPN first reported the Bears were granted the option to speak with Dennison on the heels of Houston's 19-13 wild-card win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.
Dennison has experience relevant to the Bears roster, having worked with Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall during their time together with the Denver Broncos.
The Texans have looked anything but machine-like on offense of late. Houston was sluggish against the Bengals, but Dennison's overall body of work has been impressive under coach Gary Kubiak, who already has been through three offensive coordinators during his tenure with the team. The Bears have spread a wide net in their search to replace the fired Lovie Smith. Looking almost exclusively at offensive-minded candidates, Chicago also has met or plans to meet with New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan and Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, among others.

Finally! Honestly would take him above all else. Would probably be an easier transition for the position players, and we might just keep Bates.

I don't know how this fits in with the reports that Emery wants to being in a couple "finalists" this week for 2nd interviews. There's several candidates, Dennison included, who are still alive in the playoffs and won't be available for at least another week.

Dennison is my pick to click with the Bears. He's had two straight years of top ten offenses and has arguably produced the most balanced offense in the league in each of the past two seasons. I hope Emery strongly considers this guy for the job. I really like Houston's blocking scheme (zone blocking).

Texans have a good/great Oline, have a similar build team in the O (other than the OL). I like the idea of Dennison.
Forte - Foster
Cutler - Schaub
Marshall - Johnson

I don't think we should read into that finalists report just yet, since there are so many of these guys who still haven't been interviewed. It'll take all of next week for that to even be possible.
And even though the Texans are still in the Playoffs, he can still be interviewed this coming week, unless I read the Tribune article wrong.
I think he's probably the best candidate available. Has a ton of experience running the Shanahan style offense in both Denver & now Houston, has worked with both Cutler & Marshall, has experience as an O-line & Special Teams coach as well. At 54, he's not as old as guys like Arians or Clements either. Of the OC's being mentioned, he may be the best fit. If Emery hires Dennison and then gets him the right kind of O-linemen for that zone blocking scheme, this offense has more than enough talent at the skill positions to be at least decent next year.
I guess the only question I'd have with him (and really any coach that's hired), is what direction do we go with the Defense? If there's any way to convince Hot Rod to stick around another year or two, great, but that doesn't seem very likely. It'd be nice to get someone in here that's familiar with the Tampa 2 or a similar style of 4-3 defense and not mess with that side of the ball too much, at least not right away.

You make a darn convincing argument for why Dennison should be the leading candidate. Well done, assuming of course he doesn't want to screw around too much with the D side. As much as I hate to, I'll be rooting for the Pats to take Houston out of the playoffs next week so we can get this guy on board, if he's really "the guy".
If so, who would you foresee becoming the OC?

Dennison runs the most balanced offense in the league, no question about it. I would prefer to have a coach who would scrap the Cover 2 scheme the Bears have run over the past decade and still run the version of the 4-3 defense like the New York Giants operate. I want a man-on-man defense. The Cover 2/Tampa 2 is passe and really doesn't work anymore unless you have certain kinds of players. Our defense may suffer at first, but converting to a man defense out of the 4-3 is crucial with keeping up with the Jones'.
I don't know if this would mean that the Bears would switch to a 3-4 defense if Dennison were to come to Chicago or not, to be perfectly honest with you. Anybody with thoughts on that subject?

I was thinking the same thing plus he has that old shanahan mentality that cutler thrived with. Under the radar and never thought of him. And bring that blocking scheme and let forte kick some ass. I can dig this hire
