I've wondered countless times, if it would have been very different, if Tice had set the oline - tackle to tackle - before the season began, and if a #1 went down to injury, he simple moved the #2 up. Next man up.
This would have required of Tice:
1. He would have had to have known his players abilities, and graded them out BEFORE the season began. Heck, he had most of these players for multiple years. He should have had a clue as to their ability in 2011. No more of this musical chairs stuff. He's paid to dead-bang KNOW the players and their abilities and set a depth chart accordingly.
2. Not making players play out of position after the season begins. (e.g., if C.Will is deemed to be a solid guard in 2011, and a total fail at tackle, then don't move him from guard to tackle). Set the oline and leave it alone. Let the players work as a unit and improve as a unit game to game. Great olines require this.
Everyone was saying Mike Tice was a stinking genius with an oline. But even a high school coach knows better than this. The guy was about as smart as a turnip in the grocery store produce section.

Tice utterly eff'd that situation up like he did virtually everything on the OL this past year. Rachal replaced Spencer (after he replaced CWill) at LG and was an epic fail the first two games. Chilo got his shot and stabilized the position. He played pretty darn well for a guy new to the team and coming off the bench. Dare I say it, he was our 2nd best interior OLman (after Louis) all year. Way better than Spencer, better than Garza, better than Carimi as a G, better than EWill, and better than Brown (who you couldn't expect much from as a udfa rookie coming in cold). If you guys remember, it was looking then like Emery picked up a hidden gem from the waiver wire who was making the best of a change-of-scenery opportunity.
After the disaster that was the SF game (in which we totally out coached yet again), Tice benches him even though the embarrassing sack fest we gave up was almost exclusively on Webb and Carimi. Rachal threw a shit fit and I can kinda understand it (not saying its right but...). He felt and was singled-out for accountability that Tice hadn't shown to Webb all year and the tackle play was the problem not the LG play. We all know what ensued.
As it is right now, we don't have much at LG. EWill sucks hard so don't even suggest it. Spencer blows and is a goner soon. Brown is a possibility but is ready to start? Garza may be an option if we get Jones in the draft to take over C but we all know he's on his last legs. I'm not averse to giving Rachal a one year, vet minimum "last chance" deal and letting him compete for a roster spot in TC/PS. What's to lose? We need depth there and he has shown he can play the position. If he hasn't got his head straightened out in the offseason or otherwise flops performance-wise, then we just cut him.
i'm pretty sure the story is the niners knew how to push rachal's buttons and he melted down on the field. tice benched him and then he continued to melt down off of the field.

I was really surprised by his quickness and athleticism. When he pulls, he is amazing.

Yeah he has some potential at gaurd, I think once he is accustomed to the mechanics of gaurd instead of tackle we could have a player here
It wouldn't shock me for him to compete for LG, but it comes down to how well he is brought along, from what I saw he had the raw tool set to be a player...I love a competition between a 2nd/4th draft pick him and garza if we end up with a replacement center
