I think if anyone challenges Roach (if they re-sign him) it will be J T Thomas. If they don't let Geno Hayes go then he should be a WLB only guy. He didn't play all that well at SLB. I think DeCicco is more the guy in the middle because he played a Monster Back position in college much like Urlacher did which left him kind of uniquely prepared to understand how to play MLB correctly in the Bears defense.

If the defensive staff is kept intact for the most part and Roach returns I think it will stay somewhat that way. Roach is under appreciated as a SLB. He's not the playmaker in the LB group. His job is to seal the outside or fill the gap between RT and RG and force runs back into the middle where the other guys make the stop. So unless they make a change in how that defense is run he'll never have huge stats. But he tackles well and he covers well and he plays with discipline which for his position is important.

i put this in the other thread as well.....

If we were a team that was needing a complete rebuild..switching to a 3-4 would be fine... i think the 3-4 is the better defense myself, i think the scheme is better against today's offenses... and i also think there is much more talent available through the draft to build a 3-4 defense with... however, the bears a playoff aspiring team.. a team with quite a few in their prime/old players, and making that switch now would not be smart... that would mean that if our offense improves under our new coach and new OL pieces, our D would take a step back and we are now right back where we are this offseason.

if we want to make a switch to a 3-4.. then wait until the right time to do so

The more I read about draft prospects, the more I wanna see the Bears taking Georgia's LB Alec Ogletree in the second round. Looks like an explosive sideline-to-sideline playmaker with the athleticism to stay on the field as a three-down linebacker.

my favorite prospect is Kevin Minter from LSU

we could possibly get im in round two, and for anyone hoping for a new LB to start learning to take the reins from BU then this is your best option. I like the guy and personally see a much higher ceiling than T'eo here. This is the best prospect we will get this year. Even if T'eo is on the board at 20 if Emery values his reputation he will take Barret Jones/Chance Warmack/Cooper/Some suprise OT who plunges down to us. Simple as that.

I do not think that this is a good time to move to a 3-4 JMHO

we have obvious needs on offesne and a stellar defense that still is in the window to win a championship. By moving to a 3-4 we are asking our 7/6 to play 4/5. Here we have the players that could move to 5's in izzy and peppers, no problems here. The REAL problem is we would have a ton of DTs with no use to us. Not one DT we have can play a 0. A 0 in the 3-4 scheme is there to eat up doubles and keep the backside MLB clean in most cases and schemes. Look at BJ Raji, that is a perfect example of a 0. You have to be a big annoying nuiscance that demands 2 OL and we dont have anyone with that kind of style to do so. We would have to go out and find us a real 0 or teams would run all over us.

As far LBs its a tough, we have Shea to assume the rushbacker or stand up 7 if you will. BU would play one of the 20's fine. Briggs is kinda an odd man out in a 3-4 he can PROLLY play the other 20 because he is not the kind of athlete to play a 60 so would have to come inside. And we would need another true OLB, although roach maybe could do it with adjustment to his game.

In the seconadary a 3-4 is alot of man blitz scheems to confuse the OL and our seconadary has always been groomed to play zone first, could be a learning curve.


So to sum up I think we keep our D intact for now and focus on our offenisive woes. If we really want to make a run at this we will not want to create more holes then we have. If it aint broke dont fix it. JMHO

guys, I told you we should consider going MLB in the 1st round. Ogletree may be gone before we even pick at 20 and Minter won't make it to our 2nd. Really doubt it.

Would be a great Draft if we could trade down with our 1st for a few spots and trade up with our 2nd and 4th to make sure we get Minter around #45

Yeah that would be ideal, but ESP with Trestman hire we will prioritize OL first IMO

I hope we never shift to the 3-4. 4-3 defenses hold more value and superbowl wins!
