2013 linebacker projections
I am just wondering what everyone sees for the linebackers in 2013. My main concern is the draft. Is Urlacher going to be back? Where in the draft is our priority at drafting a linebacker? Does Nick Roach have what it takes to eventually replace Urlacher?

Need to wait until we know who our HC is. What D he wants to play and if this guy wants to change to a 3-4.
maybe, just maybe this is the reason why Melton isn't re-signed yet. Keep the Cap Space for a better 3-4 fit. I think Melton would fit in well, but maybe if we change the money would be used on Clady, Long or Albert.
Briggs and DeCicco will be here. BU should get 1 more year. Roach isn't good enough. DeCicco is a guy I keep an eye on. He can tackle and knows how to play in coverage. Played Saftey for a while in College.

I agree on DeCicco, he deserves a chance with a security plan in place

Im glad they brought him back after recovering from his surgery. He's a good STer and provides some MLB depth. I'm not saying he's anything close to BU in his prime, but he's a decent player who's worth looking at to make next years roster.

I think he has talent and he has proven that he can make tackles on the open field.

I'm still of the opinion that DiCicco could turn out to be another Hunter Hillenmyer. Haven't seen much to contradict that yet. As long as he doesn't get faked out anymore on a punt/kick/extra point like he did by the Giants that one time I don't see any problems with him being a depth/ST guy. Best of luck to him.

it would be really upsetting if someone comes here and tries to switch to a 3-4... i myself like the 3-4 better.. but this team has a great defense and it is not suited to make a switch.. that would just make the defense take a step back next year while we are trying to compete..
if we were a rebuilding team, then it would be a different story

well, whatever they do, I hope they dont drag ass while making the decision... I know its not as important as the QB position, but I don't want some Favre-style "hostage" situation with any position on this team. Make up your mind... if you wnat to come back and play... come back and play... if he can't make up his mind fast enough... tell him to kick rocks and find a new MLB. And I'm saying this about my favorite Bear... never thought these words would come out of my mouth. heh...

If the Bears move to a 3-4 it will be a gradual change and it won't happen in 2013 no matter who the new HC is. I think Emery made that pretty clear in his presser when he spoke about his interview and selection process.
What he said was that any HC prospect who wanted to convert of a 3-4 would need to convince him that he could do it with the personnel we have and clearly we don't have the personnel. So he might just as well have said we want you to accept coaching this team with it's current defense intact for at least one year and added because I can't afford to rebuild that and your offense too.
I believe he's like to keep the players and the staff on that side of the ball with as little change as possible. Let's fix what's broke now and leave what isn't for another day. We NEED lineman on offense and we NEED a good pass catching TE and with out first two picks those should get attention if we can't fill those NEEDS in FA.
Urlacher should return at MLB and Roach should be resigned at SLB. Roach is a decent ball player who isn't all that big and physical but he plays smart and he can take over in the middle in an emergency and not embarrass himself. He's one of those core guys we should keep around both as a starter and for depth. De Cicco recovered from his injury and if his skills haven't diminished the kid gained some ground and experience last preseason filling in for Urlacher. If he can keep improving he can play in that defense. I think the same of J T Thomas.
We may draft a LB or sign one in FA but I don't see it as a major need because I think both the new HC and Emery will be smart enough to figure out that part of team doesn't require all that much attention. Drafting Urlacher's successor is a luxury we can't afford this year.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I really hope DeCicco will get a fair chance to win that SLB spot. With Lovie gone, only Briggs, Peppers, Jenning and Tillman can be sure to be starters of their position. Melton too if re-signed
