The Bears' offense scored three touchdowns once -- count 'em, once -- in the last two months.
What’s worse, against the weekend’s four playoff teams that the Bears faced in the second half of the season, the offense scored four touchdowns. Total. Altogether.
The oline isn't our only problem. Also, I don't blame Cutler entirely, but he needs to step up his game. He shares SOME blame too. Some.
I know, Lovie Smith would use his famous saying "We're close" but that's a bunch of bull. Our offense, compared with those "real" NFL quality offenses, is like comparing a beautiful Ferrari sports car with Fred Flintstone's stone wheeled car powered by his feet. Fred isn't going to win many Ferrari races - and we're going nowhere until Emery can seriously upgrade this primative cave man offense.
Anyone who questions Lovie Smith needing to be fired is in some serious denial.

Then I thought about our team. We traded away our lone TE who could catch a football. We get Mike Martz as OC who doesn't believe in using TE's as receivers. We get Tice who apparently can't teach a TE to catch OR block - even though he played TE in the NFL.
It made me angry to see what we've been missing on the Chicago Bears. Real angry.
Yeah, KDavis was an epic fail. Whether due to bad coaching or pure lack of ability or both, who knows. The guy has impressive physical characteristics but simply hasn't shown the receiving hands or blocking ability at all. It's a major middle-field weapon that we utterly lack.
As I pointed out in the Hester thread, cutting/trading Davis, Hester, and Spaeth nets a cap savings of $6.7 million better used elsewhere and none of those guys will be missed a minute on offense. That's easily enough right there to sign a vet TE in FA (Keller, Cook, MBennett, etc.) who can catch with room to spare. A pure inline blocker like Spaeth is easy to replace (maybe Eldridge?) and Adams hasn't added anything either.
If Emery is able to trade down a little in the first (say #20 to ~ mid/late 20s), that nets a 3rd round pick. In other words, Barrett Jones + a big TE prospect to develop. There really is no reason to keep any of our 2012 TEs except ERod and he's being used more as a FB/H-back type.

I would like the top 2 picks to go at oline. Our offense is primative because of our lack of ability is incredible. Spencer, and David arw worthless, garza and Webb are bad, carimi should relize he's on some serious borrowed time and I'm praying Louis didn't have his career railroaded.
That being said it is extremely hard to pull when our center is getting blown up....so that's out
Our interior OL excluding Louis are not athletic whatsoever, so screens and zones are out.
Our line gets mauled in 5 on 4 or 6 on 5 protection schemes, so 5 and 4 man patterns are out
We can't sustain protection for more than about 5 seconds at most, so double moves and deep floods are out.
It all starts up front. We NEED a tier one linemen in the first and take serious concideration at another in round 2.
Minimum of 2 new starters, if we have 3 then even better, but garza Webb and spencer NEED to be on the chop block
On a positive note, brown did show a glimpse of promise and if our right sides knees work properly, they may pan out very well so one FA LT and Jones/Warmack with the possibility of another rook would turn weakness into potential strength
REALLY not complicated

And one piece that is keeping us light years behind the elite teams.... is the lack of a TE

yeah for sure, I think this can be adressed in FA as well as LT, the other pieces can be hit on via draft. We need a TE to create mismatches not create footage for ESPN's "not top 10"

I don't believe Emery has anything to do with the play calling that will be up to the new OC.

Well let's just cut to the chase here. Yes all of those playoff offenses looked light years ahead of the Bears which is why we're getting a new coach this week. For whatever reason we've gone through roughly ten years time with a GM who thought we didn't need better OLinemen or bigger and better WRs and a coach who thought his team could win big without an offense.
I haven't been to Halas Hall ever and I'm not any kind of a mentalist but I'll bet two name plates that aren't still on doors around there are Jerry Angelo's and Lovie Smith's. And the lack of an playoff caliber offense is why they aren't their even though those two basically built that defense that damn near broke a 30 year old record for defensive scoring. I guess they figured as long as the defense could put points on the board it wasn't nearly as important for the offense to do it.
They aren't here Emery is and he's already brought in two big WR one of whom made All Pro this year playing in a shitty offense and next year he'll bring in a couple of lineman and in between we're getting a coach who realizes that we do need to score more than one TD per game offensively if we hope to compete for playoff spots. The fix is already in guys. The winds are finally blowing in the right direction.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Great post. The winds are finally blowing in the right direction. Heck, no matter which of those finalist coaches Emery picks, I'm going to be a mighty happy camper.

Great points soul, I'll add that the reason we have had the faliures that we all have endured is partly beacuse of the absolute IDIOTIC philosophy that Lovie had.
Dont tell me that Lovie was not just hoping...but counting on the defense to either score or give us obscenely great field postition. This is what happened IMO in BOTH collapses that we suffered thru. By the midseason point teams had enough tape to realize "hey....their offense CANT score more than 17 points unless the defense does it for them" therefore we saw a bunch of very safe and responsible play from opposing offensive players in the 2nd halves of the season. Low and behold we ended up blowing two divison leads and missing the playoofs..hmmmm
Emery, and the next HC are not stupid. They know EXACTLY why they have a new job in the first place. Because the guy before them couldnt field a decent offense in 10 years and it costed us probably an additional 3 playoff apperances with the defense we had. They are not going to make the same mistake, and it should be a welcomed change to us...having FOCUS on modernizing this team. For this reason I say that we will go offense in round one, and possibly round two as well. Throw in a FA LT that im sure we will make number one priority and we could have an offense that doesnt even resemble what weve seen the past year. It all starts up front, and our "up front" sucks. Im very confident that Emery and the new HC wont risk a simiar fate as to what happened to their preivious job title holders.......

Great point, Grizz. You're right the defensive scores and big plays were definitely concentrated in the first half of the year. Opposing teams adjusted knowing our O was nothing to be scared of and took less chances with the ball.
