Bears' offense is light years from what I saw last weekend

My son and I were talking about this exact same thing. What a difference between our offense and what you see on a championship-level team. Our offense looks so primative by comparison. We are so predictable with our play calling a child could predict the calls. We have everyone hunkered down in max-protect blocking. Our TE's couldn't catch a cold. Our 1 claim to fame is Cutler to Marshall, over and over again. We had games where we scored 7 (or fewer) points.

Then when you watch a "real" NFL offense work (like this weekend) it is pretty impressive.

Bears' offense is light years from what I saw last weekend

You know what happened last weekend?

    Quarterbacking happened, that’s what.

    Offense happened.

    Points happened.

    You know what else happened?

Yet another example of how far the Bears' offense is from being championship-worthy, that’s what.

Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, Colin Kaepernick and Joe Flacco led teams in many different ways, and all ended up in the end zone. Even last weekened’s losers had some great quarterbacking.

Remember, this was good team vs. good team. This is what the playoffs are all about, especially the divisional round. That’s when the bye teams host the survivors from the first round, and this year produced the most points ever.

Sure, there were some defensive and special teams scores, but this was mostly one offensive touchdown after another.

    You know, unlike the Bears.

Last weekend, every team scored at least three offensive touchdowns. Heck, Seattle did it in the fourth quarter alone.

The Bears' offense scored three touchdowns once -- count 'em, once -- in the last two months.

What’s worse, against the weekend’s four playoff teams that the Bears faced in the second half of the season, the offense scored four touchdowns. Total. Altogether. Drive home safely.

Again, the playoff offenses did it better against better teams last weekend. Even the losers, and if they’re losers, I’m not sure how you categorize the Bears.

But I’m finding even more reason to call them quarterback-challenged.

Sure, Jay Cutler has a pile of talent. Problem is, he has a pile of questions.

Can he be coached? Can he fix his mechanics? Can he find someone other than Brandon Marshall? Can he beat good teams? Can he win a Super Bowl for the Bears?

The last question is the one that general manager Phil Emery has to answer with his coaching hire. He has interviewed everybody except an exhumed Sid Gilman, but the way the Bears are constructed and the way the NFL works, this weekend underscored the demand for a quarterback whisperer.

You can question the Bears' offensive line, and many have, including me. You can question the receiving targets, and that includes the deposed Lovie Smith’s insistence on forfeiting the tight end spot.

You can question the play-calling and everything else, but look, San Francisco and Seattle got there with rookie quarterbacks, and New England got three touchdowns from a running back you’ve never heard of because Brady does everything that Cutler can’t -- beat good teams, dissect defenses, beat good teams, find the open man.

Oh, and getting plays in on time. That’s not a Cutler thing. It’s a Bears thing. And it’s a bad thing.

Brady killed the Texans defense -- the same defense that concussed Cutler -- by running an up-tempo offense with a quick snap count that prevented Houston from substituting personnel or switching looks by the remaining personnel.

I’m watching Brady destroy the Texans with a smart game plan and spectacular execution Sunday, and I’m thinking, the Bears couldn’t do that on Xbox, even if you spotted them two cheats.

It was Brady. It’s not Cutler. It was a Patriots coach who demands precision. It’s not a Bears outfit that just wasted another timeout.

It might not be fair, but that’s where Super Bowls start. It also might be where the Bears’ hopes end. It certainly was the story of last weekend. I hope Emery was watching instead of trying to interview, I don’t know, the special teams coach from the Vancouver Canucks.

Bottom line, that's why these teams are in the playoffs and we aren't. People can debate if it was the HC or the players or the winter moon, but if you can't put points on the board you will not survive in the playoffs. We would have looked horrid. Some believe that we were a playoff team because we won 10 games, but it's also how you play. Could you have seen us against ANY of those teams? Does anyone really think we could have put up more points than the teams that lost? I just don't see it.

Not making the playoffs will be remembered as a good thing. We would have been really embarrassed and would not be on the road to anew coach now. It will all work out.

I thought of that 14 point effort against the Vikings, the feeble 7 point effort against the 9'ers....and the 6 points our offense managed against the Texans.....

The difference is up front plain and simple, our lack of blocking seriously limits what we can even attempt. We don't fix the line and we will never compete in the playoffs, no matter who is calling the plays it won't matter, the o line will have them by the balls

Kinda similar to 1971...(Bobby) Douglass to (George) Farmer. Our Offense sucked then too while an aging Future HOF Linebacker in the twighlight of his carrer tried to keep the team respectable through Defense. Sounds kinda familiar doesn't it.

yeah. This absolutely HAS to get fixed. I think we are all expecting that to happen. If it does not, I will be shocked.

Fixing and upgrading the O is what this offseason is all about. 90% of it anyway. Coaching, OL, Cutler, TE, the whole she-bang. No big secret there. This article only states the obvious that any casual observer already knows. Emery's words and actions thus far speak volumes that he understands that as well. This isn't the Lovie-Angelo show anymore. I expect concrete, concerted efforts to come about over the next few months to address this.

If it isn't fixed, or near being fixed, Emery should be fired.

I knew we had a rotten offense, but watching the power and precision of the offenses this weekend was a jaw dropper for me. Just watching the stellar TE play was incredible. Time after time, you saw the power of a team that uses TE's as receivers. It was "money in the bank" gravy plays for moving the chains, getting first downs, avoiding sacks & busting up defenses.

Then I thought about our team. We traded away our lone TE who could catch a football. We get Mike Martz as OC who doesn't believe in using TE's as receivers. We get Tice who apparently can't teach a TE to catch OR block - even though he played TE in the NFL.

It made me angry to see what we've been missing on the Chicago Bears. Real angry.

We have not had an offense like that since the Ditka era. We really haven't. The last time we were even close was during Ron Turners first run with the team as OC under Wannesteadt, but that wasn't even very good. Our O in 2006 was still poor and we got there on Devin Hester and Defense alone.
