I think he'll be a HC someday but I don't think he's ready yet and I don't think he's our guy as a HC. I would be very surprised if it was Clements when you have other OCs in Arians, McCoy, Trestman and Dennison who trump him as far as experience and track record go. Trestman has even been a HC in Canada as well as a very successful OC in SF before he went to Canada.

Overall Trestman just may be the best HC to fix both what's wrong with the offense and what's wrong with Cutler and he's usually coached teams who played a 4-3 defense as well. I think who ever comes in may need to agree to keep that defensive staff intact for a year just like Emery had to keep Lovie.
my opinion is that clements made rodgers and rodgers made the packers. mccarthy calls the plays, but he also understands how important clements is. the pack wouldn't even let us near him a few years ago. as far as arians goes, his health worries me and his offense isn't very inspiring, it's run first, which is what we've been trying to do since lovie got here. dennison is intriguing, but didn't schaub go like a bunch of games recently without a TD pass? he seems very managed, and i don't that for cutler. trestman doesn't even coach the same sport as the bears play right now and hasn't in a while. mccoy i like.

i think any HC will try to retain our DC and base defense, as well.

Another theory (well, hypothesis actually, but you get the idea) is that J. Johnsons' son or grandson got a hold of the phone (or account) and decided to pull a prank on dear ole' dad (or grandad).

Can pretty much throw about anything at the wall and it could very well stack right now.

I respect you opinion Sulley but I don't see it as you do. No the Packers wouldn't let us near Clements a couple of years ago because who wants to lose a good coach to a rival. It's a double blow because you not only lose coaching strength offensively but that guy can provide a lot of insight into how to defense you more effectively. I think he's good OC guy right now but he'd be farther down on my list of prospects for the Bears.

I think if I had to make an educated guess right now I'd say that McCoy and Trestman are the front runners. Age and health may be a factor with Arians although I think he's still in the mix somewhere and Dennison has an offense with skill players very similar to the Bears. But his strength is more with the line and I think what Emery wants is somebody to fix the offense AND Cutler.

That's where Trestman comes in. I don't know where you get that he doesn't coach the same sport. He's been the HC of the CFL champs two years running and although the rules are different it's still football. They still block and they still tackle in The Great White North. He also has a damn fine pedigree as an NFL assistant both as a QB coach and as an OC. Look over his resume. He coaches the same sport.

    NFL

Trestman moved to the National Football League and coached the running backs with the Minnesota Vikings in 1985 and 1986. He became quarterbacks coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 then held the same position with the Cleveland Browns in 1988. In Cleveland he again coached Kosar and the team finished 10–6 and made the playoffs. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1989. That year Kosar passed for 3,533 yards and 18 TDs, wide receiverWebster Slaughter had a franchise record 1,236 receiving yards, and the Browns made it to the AFC Championship game.

In 1990, Trestman returned to Minnesota as quarterbacks coach for the Vikings. He spent two years there and then left coaching for three years.
He returned to the NFL in 1995 as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with San Francisco, where he served in that capacity through 1996. The first year he was there the 49ers led the NFL with 457 points scored, 644 pass attempts and 4,779 passing yards.

Trestman joined the Detroit Lions as quarterbacks coach in 1997. That year Lion's quarterback Scott Mitchell passed for 3,484 yards, second most in team history.

In 1998 he was with the Arizona Cardinals as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. That year quarterback Jake Plummer threw for 3,737 yards, and the Cardinals made the playoffs for the first time since 1982 and won their first post season game in 51 years.

He next went to the Oakland Raiders in 2001 as the quarterbacks coach. In 2002 he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Raiders led the NFL in total offense with 389.8 yards per game and passing yards with 279.7 per game. Under Trestman's guidance, Raiders QB Rich Gannon won the 2002 NFL MVP award as the Raiders reached Super Bowl XXXVII, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Trestman spent the 2004 season with the Miami Dolphins before returning to the college ranks. In 2012, Trestman was interviewed by the Indianapolis Colts for their vacant head-coaching job. The job was ultimately given to Chuck Pagano[1]

On January 5, 2013, the Chicago Bears announced that they will interview Trestman for their vacant head coaching position.[2]

On January 8, 2013, the Cleveland Browns interviewed Trestman for their vacant head coaching position.[3]

All things considered now that the Broncos have been elminated and McCoy is now available immediately I believe he's at the head of the class but I also believe Trestman has moved ahead of Arians and that it will one of those two.

Besides before you put down CFL coaches becoming NFL HCs think back to the Bills during the Marv Levy era and how he took them to four straight SBs and Levy has given Trestman a very strong testimonial and recommendation.

I'm not saying Clements isn't a good prospect I just don't believe he's the best for the Bears or anyone else right now. If he was why aren't other team looking for HCs pursuing him hard? I think they all believe he needs a little more seasoning as an OC. JMHO and again I would be very surprised of he's the guy, but who knows. Emery does a lot of things you don't necessarily expect him to do.

    I think Dennison interviewed yesterday.

If Houston loses tomorrow which is pretty likely then I think all of Emery's top guys will be available for interviews and second interviews for those who make the final cut. Dennison hasn't had his first yet so look for that to happen early in the week if Houston loses.

Then look to see who Emery has back to a second interview and those guys are his top two or three. I think the Trestman thing may be more than a rumor. I don't think he's been hired or that would have been announced but I'd be willing to bet he's been told to stay loose for a second interview and that he's near or at the top of the list.

According to the Houston paper I thought it said he canceled to prepare for the NE game. I'll try to confirm where I read that but I could be wrong. Well hell you're there so you of all of us should know. Did you read anything about him canceling?

Please no, pretty please Phil Emery, don't bring some CFL coach in here to be our head coach. The last thing we need is a coach with only minimal coaching experience at the NFL level. Just because he's worked with a lot of QBs does NOT mean he's worth anything as an HC.
Guess I gotta do this one more time. This is NOT minimal experience at the NFL level. The guys has 20 years experience as an NFL assistant coach and OC and five years as the HC in the CFL with a .656 W/L percentage and two Grey Cup Championships.

Marv Levy came straight from the CFL to the Bills and went to four straight SBs with a very Jay Cutler like Jim Kelly as his QB and he has offered a very strong and positive testimonial about Trestmans abilities as a coach.

The guy is a strong candidate whether anyone wants to believe it or not. Do your homework on the guy before you bash him people.

I believe he did interview. The hangup was that he wouldn't take the time to fly to Chicago - the caveat was that they had to interview him here.

I was hoping that King Peyton could win the SB one more time but now McCoy is available.

Mr. Emery, you're on the clock. Choose wisely!
